On the Smugglers’ Radar

“On The Smugglers’ Radar” is a feature for books that have caught our eye: books we have heard of via other bloggers, directly from publishers, and/or from our regular incursions into the Amazon jungle. Thus, the Smugglers’ Radar was born. Because we want far more books than we can possibly buy or review (what else is new?), we thought we would make the Smugglers’ Radar into a weekly feature – so YOU can tell us which books you have on your radar as well!

On Ana’s Radar:

The new book by Max Gladstone is touted as a “feminist Guardians of the Galaxy” and if there is a man I trust to write something like this, it is Max Gladstone so GIMME.

A thriller that is a contemporary YA take on Henry VIII’s wives from the perspective of the girls? I AM HERE FOR THIS:

It sounds like the ridiculously long lead-up to an astoundingly absurd punchline, right? Except it’s not. Well, unless my life is the joke, which is kind of starting to look like a possibility given how beyond soap opera it’s been since I moved to Lancaster. But anyway, here’s your answer: we’ve all had the questionable privilege of going out with Lancaster High School’s de facto king. Otherwise known as my best friend. Otherwise known as the reason I’ve already helped steal a car, a jet ski, and one hundred spray-painted water bottles when it’s not even Christmas break yet. Otherwise known as Henry. Jersey number 8.
Meet Cleves. Girlfriend number four and the narrator of The Dead Queens Club, a young adult retelling of Henry VIII and his six wives. Cleves is the only girlfriend to come out of her relationship with Henry unscathed—but most breakups are messy, right? And sometimes tragic accidents happen…twice…

I don’t know a lot about the next one apart from the fact that it’s been described by the author on Twitter as “A Black Mirror-esque YA thriller exploring social influencing, the nature of love and whether this digital age threatens our free will and privacy “!

On Thea’s Radar

First up on my radar, a fantasy novel from Angry Robot that sounds promising:

A young sword prodigy must impersonate a lost princess and throw her life into a deadly political game, in this kinetic epic fantasy novel by the author of the award-winning Majat Code series

Naia dreams of becoming a Jaihar Blademaster, but after assaulting a teacher, her future seems ruined. Next up, a highly anticipated sequel–I was pleasantly surprised by Ash Princess and have been eagerly awaiting Lady Smoke:

Speaking of sequels, Claire Legrand’s Furyborn was another delightful discovery last year–I’m excited to red more this year:

This sci-fi thriller sounds AWESOME and I love the cover and I need it in my life now now now:
