HAPPY SMUGGLIVUS, EVERYONE! As part of our Smugglivus Celebrations, we took a retrospective look at 2016 yesterday. Today, as we turn 9 (NINE!), we look forward to 2017–and make a few exciting announcements!
ALL THE PLANS FOR 2017
Gods and Monsters!
2017 is the year of Gods and Monsters! Like Subversive Fairytales, First Contact and The Year of the Superhero before it, our short story open call for spring/summer 2017 focuses on all things godly and monstrous. We are hard at work reading submissions – we received over 1000 short stories! – and can’t wait to announce our shortlist.
Novellas
A few weeks ago we announced our first four titles in our Novella Initiative: Good Bye by Dianna Gunn, Reenu-You by Michele Tracy Berger, Bearly a Lady by Cassandra Khaw and Girl Reporter by Tansy Rayner Roberts will be released in our Spring/Summer season.
And on that note…
Two More Novellas!
We are happy to announce that we have acquired another two novellas for our Novella Initiative: one is a futuristic SciFi Romance by A.E. Ash (author of our very own Luminous) and the other is by S.L. Huang, the third story in the Hunting Monsters series, completing Xiao Hong, Mei and Auntie Rosa’s stories.
And stay tuned because we will open for novella submissions ASAP.
NOVELS!
This year also marks the publication of Book Smugglers Publishing’s second set of novels and we are happy to announce we will be publishing a trilogy by Susan Jane Bigelow that includes Fallen Star, a new original novel. Leading up to its publication, Book Smugglers Publishing will repackage and relaunch the first two books in the series: Daughter Star and Seeker Star.
The trilogy will be published in quick succession in the fall.
A Special Surprise!
We have been huge fans of Andrea K Höst’s novels and her Touchstone Trilogy holds a special place in our reader’s hearts. With that said, we are more than delighted to announce that we will be publishing a special limited edition print of Touchstone Trilogy starting in March 2017! With covers by Kirbi Fagan, this will be the perfect opportunity for new fans to find the series and for old fans to have a special copy of these amazing books!
Epic Reads
Last year, we (re)read the Percy Jackson and the Olympians series, and Thea re-traveled the road to the Dark Tower (she’s planning on finishing books 6, 7 and 4.5 this year). We want to do this again in 2016–and we’re going to start with a new series…
The Old Man’s War Series by John Scalzi
We’ll be kicking off the readalong this month with the titular first book, Old Man’s War on Wednesday January 25, 2017. The rest of the series schedule is below!
The Ghost Brigades – February 22
The Last Colony – March 22
Zoe’s Tale – April 26
The Human Division – May 24
The End of All Things – June 21
More details to come soon, but we hope you’ll join us on the ride.
ALL THE TRAVEL
We plan to continue our biannual business meetings in 2017. We are both to attend both Nine Worlds in London AND WorldCon in Finland!
WORLD DOMINATION.
Duh.
A Superhero Anthology
And last but not least, it wouldn’t be smugglivus without an anthology! Today we are proud to announce that our Superhero season of short stories are collected in Superheroes Reborn, available for sale now.
From a child of the prophecy to a top secret super-soldier, sidekicks who abscond their duties and ones who fall in love with their archnemeses, superheroes never fail to inspire us. Superheroes Reborn collects five origin stories, including:
- “The Indigo Mantis” by E. Catherine Tobler
- “Kid Dark Against the Machine” by Tansy Rayner Roberts
- “How to Piss Off A Failed Super-Soldier” by John Chu
- “Superior” by Jessica Lack
- “The Life and Times of Angel Evans” by Meredith Debonnaire
All stories originally edited and published by The Book Smugglers.
You can pick up your copy of the anthology directly from The Book Smugglers for $4.99.
And with that, we bid you A HAPPY SMUGGLIVUS, ONE AND ALL.

January 8, 2017 at 2:17 pmCongrats on 9 years! Just putting it out there that you two have recommended a lot of really good books to me over the time I’ve been reading your blog, and I really appreciate that! I want to try out some of your published works as well.
