Zen Cho’s Sorcerer to the Crown was one of my absolutely favourite reads of 2015 and a top 10 book of the year. The novel is out soon on paperback and we are giving away 4 copies today.
About the book:
Magic and mayhem clash with the British elite in this whimsical and sparkling debut.
The Royal Society of Unnatural Philosophers maintains the magic within His Majesty’s lands. But lately, the once proper institute has fallen into disgrace, naming an altogether unsuitable gentleman as their Sorcerer Royal and allowing England’s stores of magic to bleed dry. At least they haven’t stooped so low as to allow women to practice what is obviously a man’s profession…
At his wit’s end, Zacharias Wythe, Sorcerer Royal of the Unnatural Philosophers, ventures to the border of Fairyland to discover why England’s magical stocks are drying up, an adventure that brings him in contact with Prunella Gentlewoman, a woman with immense power and an unfathomable gift, and sets him on a path which will alter the nature of sorcery in all of Britain—and the world at large…

July 7, 2016 at 9:34 amI love the Glamourist Histories series by Mary Robinette Kowal and it has all: regency/romance/magic

July 7, 2016 at 9:40 amI’ve heard so many good things about this book, including comparisons to Strange and Norell. I don’t read “Regency” novels very often, so I won’t be comparing it to others. I’ll be looking for evidence of the interaction of multiple cultures in a setting where one generally doesn’t expect to find diversity.

July 7, 2016 at 11:24 amIt’s not exactly a regency/romance/magic book, but the book that I’ve been thinking about the most lately is “Goldenhand,” the upcoming next book in Garth Nix’s series that started with Sabriel. While the tone is more straight up fantasy, there’s still a royal court, and there’s magic, and there’s a bit of romance (and hopefully more to come- crossing my fingers for that!)

July 7, 2016 at 11:25 amJonathan Strange & Mr Norrell got me into the genre and is still my favorite (although Mary Robinette Kowal’s Glamourist Histories are great, too).

July 7, 2016 at 11:27 amThank you for hosting this giveaway! This book looks rights up my alley. I recently finished reading the Temeraire series, set during the Regency/Napoleonic Wars, but with DRAGONS.

July 7, 2016 at 12:15 pmOoh, thank you for the giveaway, I’ve been eyeing this one for a while.
My favourite romance/regency book would be Pride and Prejudice, and my favourite magic book … that’s a more difficult question. The Name of the Wind, if we count sympathy as magic. 🙂

One of my all time favorite book series (that fits into the regency-fantasy category) is the Glamourist Histories by Kowal.
Thanks for the giveaway! And for all the awesome reading-suggestions. I’m almost always interested in the books you feature. ^^

July 7, 2016 at 9:14 pmNo Proper Lady by Isabel Cooper. It’s a terminator/time travel/My Fair Lady/regency romance. It was awesome!!! Thanks for sharing!

July 8, 2016 at 3:29 amCotillion is far and away my favorite “regency” ; but Heather Rose Jones’ Alpennia novels are probably my favorite regency-with-magic.
(As a point of pedantry, I don’t think Jane Austen’s novels are “regencies” because I think think that the term properly applies only to novels written deliberately retrospectively and set in the period, not those actually produced during it.)

July 9, 2016 at 10:32 pmIf the question is favorite regency/romance/fantasy, it’s probably Strange & Norrell, but I am also quite fond of Sorcery & Cecilia. If it’s just Regency Romance, though, it has to be Lord of Scoundrels by Loretta Chase.

July 10, 2016 at 7:52 pmhmm, well if pride and prejudice counts, then that! otherwise i haven’t read much in the genre, i guess. i did read a courtney milan that was page turning and entertaining. but i’d love to read more intelligent/rewarding romance novels and it seems like lots are set in the regency period. hmm! much to look into.
thanks for the giveaway!
