HAPPY HALLOWEEN, dear readers! In order to celebrate this spookiest of holidays, we are proud to offer a giveaway of historical supernatural YA mystery, Jackaby by William Ritter. (Full dislosure: Thea works for Workman Publishing, of which Algonquin Young Readers is a division.)
About the Book:
“Miss Rook, I am not an occultist,” Jackaby said. “I have a gift that allows me to see truth where others see the illusion–and there are many illusions. All the world’s a stage, as they say, and I seem to have the only seat in the house with a view behind the curtain.”
Newly arrived in New Fiddleham, New England, 1892, and in need of a job,Abigail Rook meets R. F. Jackaby, an investigator of the unexplained with a keen eye for the extraordinary–including the ability to see supernatural beings. Abigail has a gift for noticing ordinary but important details, which makes her perfect for the position of Jackaby’s assistant. On her first day, Abigail finds herself in the midst of a thrilling case: A serial killer is on the loose. The police are convinced it’s an ordinary villain, but Jackaby is certain it’s a nonhuman creature, whose existence the police–with the exception of a handsome young detective named Charlie Cane–deny.
Doctor Who meets Sherlock in a debut novel, the first in a series, brimming with cheeky humor and a dose of the macabre.
Giveaway details:
We have two signed copies of Jackaby up for grabs, courtesy of the publisher! The giveaway is open to addresses in the US and Canada only, and will run until Sunday November 9 at 12:01pm EST. To enter, use the form below!

October 31, 2014 at 2:16 amUmmm…I don’t think any of the horror novels I read is considered YA. Does The Girl With All the Gifts count? 🙂 Thanks for the giveaway! I really want to read Jackaby, the premise sounds awesome!

October 31, 2014 at 8:02 amI thought the Rot & Ruin series by Jonathan Maberry was very good. And I think Jeff Hart’s “Eat, Brains, Love” is a clever and fun twist on the zombie story. I am getting ready to start book 2 “Undead with Benefits”.

October 31, 2014 at 4:57 pmRemember Me by Christopher Pike, I read it when I was younger and it scared me so much. For a newer one, I’d say The Screaming Staircase by Jonathan Stroud, his Lockwood & Co. series is brilliant and creepy.

November 3, 2014 at 11:29 amI Hunt Killers by Barry Lyga is my absolute favorite horror book (I know it’s kind of more of a thriller, but it’s still scary!). I also really love the whole Rot & Ruin series by Jonathan Maberry! THAT is a must read for zombie enthusiasts!
Thanks for the giveaway!

November 3, 2014 at 2:49 pmI’m not a huge fan of out-and-out horror, although I like dark fantasy and suspense. I adored the brand-new HEAP HOUSE, though it’s more “creepy” than “horrific”.

November 6, 2014 at 3:36 pmI really loved Monster’s Proof by Richard Lewis – it focuses on an evil creature born from mathematics. I never thought to connect horror and math, but the book was a ton of fun.
