We are giving away one copy of Ancillary Justice by Ann Leckie (Hugo Award nominee for Best Novel); one copy of Speculative Fiction 2012 – edited by Justin Landon and Jared Shurin (Hugo Award Nominee for Best Related Work); one copy of Saga – Volume 2 written by Brian K. Vaughan, illustrated by Fiona Staples (Hugo Award Nominee for Best Graphic Story); and one DVD of Pacific Rim (Hugo Award Nominee for Best Dramatic Presentation, Long Form).

August 16, 2014 at 12:33 amI’m rooting for Saga because a) I loveeeee it! and b) It happens to be the only one I’ve read. Best novella: Six-Gun Snow White. LOVED IT. ANd Catching Fire, or maybe Iron Man 3. And I have conflicts with GOt and DW. Eeeek! I’ll be happy if either wins. And Ancillary Justic even if I haven’t read it ’cause I wasn’t a big fan of Parasite and meh about the other books.

August 16, 2014 at 12:37 amI have a particular fondness for the Nebula awards and usually do not pay as much attention to the Hugos. I do however have to lean towards Saga, as I just finished the third and they are great and still want to see Pacific Rim.

August 16, 2014 at 12:46 amThe Hugo nominee I’m rooting for most is “The Water That Falls on You from Nowhere” by John Chu for short story. “If You Were a Dinosaur, My Love” by Rachel Swirsky was also amazing, and I really liked “Selkie Stories Are for Losers” by Sofia Samatar. (Best Short Story was a very strong category this year.) But nothing I’ve read recently has stuck with me as much as the Chu story.
I’d also be happy to see Ancillary Justice win the Hugo for Best Novel.

August 16, 2014 at 1:13 amPacific Rim was definitely the best film of last year, even if it was ridiculous and stupid in so many ways. Admittedly, I don’t know the nominees well enough to have an idea of what it’s up against, but there can’t be competition against such a creation (though, if there is ever a crossover between it and the new Godzilla films…).
Ancillary Justice has caught my attention so many times, but I’ve never bothered buying it. Oddly enough, I would have said that about the Song of Ice and Fire series 8 years ago.

August 16, 2014 at 5:12 amI haven’t gotten to the books yet, but I’ve read all of the short fiction except three that weren’t available for free online. I’m eager for results! The short story category was especially strong, it could go to any of them for various reasons. They should still be available, you guys should check them out if you can. For novelette I wasn’t able to read Brad Torgersen’s story. I think it’s between Chiang and de Bodard. De Bodaed was very good but I loved Chiang because he made me re-think my assumptions, and it’s about something that’s happening now already in some ways and I certainly can see coming. It was relevant and I found it powerful. As for novella, I wasn’t able to read Wells or Torgersen. Equiod was fun yet dark, one of Stross’s best. I didn’t like Wakulla Springs, despite it’s huge number of nominations and awards. I liked the history it conveyed, but these aren’t historical fiction awards. Six-Gun Snow White was 95% great, it stalled out a bit right at the end, but I think it should win the category of those options. But maybe one of the first two is great. I’m sure Wakulla will win again though.

I keep trying to make all my patrons check it out whenever they come to the library. Ancillary Justice was AMAZING – also my choice for my best novel. And I, too, am rooting for Pacific Rim – I have so many thought and feelings on why Pacific Rim should win. I’m slowly making my way through the short stories, so I’ll have to reserve my judgment on those.

August 16, 2014 at 10:33 amI am so excited about the Hugo awards. This is the first time I’ve voted and it’s a… shall we say interesting year. I really, really hope that each category’s award goes to the most deserving work.
Ancillary Justice should win the best novel category, even though I could understand the Wheel of Time fans voting for Robert Jordan’s work. I won’t go into my thoughts about certain nominees – but you know who I mean. Let’s just say I didn’t expect to use “no award” on my very first Hugo ballot.

August 19, 2014 at 4:29 pmAncillary Justice was made of amazing. So glad to see it won. I haven’t gotten to Saga yet, even though I own the first volume. I keep hearing such great things that I 1) don’t want to be disappointed and 2) kind of want to keep the suspense up. You can only read something for the first time once (that sentence was kind of convoluted, I hope someone understood it) and I’m looking forward to a huge glom once a few more volumes have been issued.

I read and loved Saga Vol 1 and LOVED it, and Ancillary Justice has been on my radar since Thea (I think it was Thea) reviewed it. It looks fab. I’m actually really glad it won over The Wheel of Time – not because Robert Jordan/Brian Sanderson didn’t deserve the award, but because it seemed like such a safe choice (if that makes sense).
