Kind of how I found Andrea Host and Lindsay Buroker. Her name is Intisar Khanani and the book I read was Thorn. A retelling of The Goose Girl. Can’t wait to read more of her stuff.

December 25, 2013 at 5:49 amPicking favourites, always difficult:
I’d say “Gut gegen Nordwind” (Love virtually), by Daniel Glattauer.
An epistolary novel, an eMail romance to exact, which turned out to be unexpectedly charming – I’m glad I gave that one a chance.

December 25, 2013 at 8:26 amGeez, you mean I have to choose just one? :p I read so many good books this past year that it’s really hard to narrow down the list. Though if I had to, I’d say it would be a 3-way tie between Courtney Schafer’s “The Tainted City,” Scott Lynch’s “The Lies of Locke Lamora,” and Nnedi Okorafor’s “Who Fears Death.”

December 25, 2013 at 1:26 pmI finally read Code Name: Verity this year. Once I started it, I couldn’t put it down – ended up staying up on a work night until 2:00 in the morning (and cried basically from 12:30 til 2:00) and spent the next day recommending it to everyone I came across…
Barbara Elness
December 25, 2013 at 1:31 pmMy favorite has got to be Jennifer Estep’s Heart of Venom, she’s always at the top of my list. But I’ll add another wonderful favorite – Richard Ellis Preston, Jr’s Romulus Buckle and the City of the Founders. A wonderful steampunk adventure that I adored.
Biblibio
December 25, 2013 at 1:32 pmKalpa Imperial was without a doubt the best book I read this year. As for recently published… honestly not sure. There were a few I liked quite a bit, but my year was very dry when it came to jaw-dropping good books. Really, it was only Kalpa Imperial that blew me away… and Lean In, I suppose, but that was a very different sort of reading experience and my appreciation for it isn’t quite the same as labeling a book as “the best book I read in 2013″…
Tabitha P.

December 25, 2013 at 2:20 pmThis year it was definitely The Historian by Elizabeth Kostova. I was so reluctant to pick it up as I was afraid it’s going to be another cliché vampire book but OMG. Mind blown! As a fan of horror, this book is gripping, suspenseful and made me a tad more alert at night. Waiting so long to read it was my bad…

December 25, 2013 at 6:02 pmMy favourite read of 2013 was Elizabeth Moon Vatta’s War series. Not new, but “Trading in Danger” was newly recommended here, I bought the first one when it was on Kindle sale, and promptly ended up buying the rest. The first two, “Trading in Danger” and “Marque and Reprisal” were the best, I think, but all were good, really.
Victoria Hoyle
December 25, 2013 at 6:24 pmMy favourite book of 2013 was probably The Charioteer by Mary Renault, a 1953 novel about a young gay man falling in love after being wounded during WWII. It was reprinted by Virago and I was surprised by how straightforward Renault was about her characters sexuality, and also by how tenderly she wrote gay romance. She was a lesbian herself and lived in South Africa with her partner, who she met while nursing in the 1920s. A really lovely book that deserves a wider audience.

December 26, 2013 at 9:08 amYou cannot actually expect a bunch of rabid book lovers to actually choose only ONE BOOK can you? Impossible. I’m going to list a few of the most recent highlights of my 2013 reading.
The Tell-Tale Con by Aimee Gilchrist – this was a surprise, a really good and funny and interesting YA mystery without loads of silliness that often gets squeezed into YA books.
The Palace Job by Patrick Weekes – a very fun fantasy heist story as if Ocean’s Eleven had a love child with Pratchet’s Discworld.
Cry Baby Hollow by Aimee Love – an urban fantasy in rural Tennessee. I think that about says it all.
I left off most of the bigger ones, those don’t need the exposure but these underapreciated ones do. Also, no, I don’t know why there are so many Aimees on my list.

December 26, 2013 at 10:10 amThat’s almost mean to have to choose just one, but okay. I’d have to choose The Screaming Staircase by Jonathan Stroud. Great story in a fantastic world, and his best book I think.

It’s been an excellent year for books! Thanks for the giveaway!

December 26, 2013 at 12:50 pmOh man, I’m not sure what books I read this year were published in 2013 but some of my favorite reads were The Book Thief (brutal but amazing), And All the Stars (a book with people who actually use common sense!?!), The Candy Makers (So so so so so so awesome), Discount Armageddon (Tropes actually work in this one), Unnatural Creatures (One of the best short story collections ever), The Girl Who Fell Beneath Fairyland and Led the Revels There (Want to go here so bad!), The Graveyard Book (Perfect mix of scary, sweet, fun, and fanciful), The Haunting of Hill House (the most atmospheric book ever…can’t believe it took me so long to pick it up), Raven Boys (sensible and friendly and awesome) and finally Miracles and other Christmas Stories (seriously there is the most perfect Christmas Alien story in here!). These are my favorites for 2013…except for all the others I don’t have time to put on the list.
Lillian
December 26, 2013 at 1:41 pmThat’s a big question, but I’d say my favorite book read during 2013 was Ender’s Game. Can’t wait to see the movie and see if they did it justice.

December 26, 2013 at 2:14 pmThis is a really hard choice–I recently finished ILLUSIVE by Emily Lloyd-Jones which I loved, though it’s not out until 2014. THE BRIDES OF ROLLROCK ISLAND by Margo Lanagan also blew my mind. Oh, and I loved THE NIGHT CIRCUS and A FACE LIKE GLASS and… I’m bad at choosing favorites, apparently!
Christine Sarmel

December 26, 2013 at 3:52 pmIts a toss up based on genres–Pivot Point (by Kasie West) for YA, Wicked After Midnight (by Delilah S. Dawson) for paranormal historical steampunk romance and Indexing (by Seanan McGuire) for…re-imagined fairy tale creepitude? Is that a genre?
Sharli M

December 26, 2013 at 6:49 pmPicking a favorite read feels nearly impossible- but there are two that I just can’t get out of my mind. And they happen to be by the same author. Eleanor & Park and Fangirl by Rainbow Rowell kind of blew my mind this year- prior to reading Fangirl, I had never before encountered that part of my life in fiction where it wasn’t made fun of and put down- and she captured every bit so wonderfully and gave the whole genre of fanfiction and fan interaction a love letter that I completely adored. And Eleanor & Park was just so heart-wrenchingly lovely.

December 29, 2013 at 9:13 pmThe book I loved best in 2013 was non-fiction – not my usual read – that took me several months to get through. Far from the Tree, by Andrew Solomon, investigated children who were NOT like their parents – children who were deaf, autistic, prodigies, criminal, born of rape, severely disabled, born with Down’s syndrome, et al. Well researched and well written.

Okay, if I hafta, I think I’ll go with SAGA by Brian Vaughan and Fiona Staples. It’s beautiful and witty and nasty and inspiring, and it offers clever social commentary and celebrates True Love.
