Creepy Friday/BEA Giveaway: Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children by Ransom Riggs

Hello everyone, from BEA! While the both of us are at the show and are pushing through the pain (literal pain – blistered feet, tired muscles, bicep and shoulder workouts thanks to all the books), today we are thrilled to share the love and run a giveaway of a truly awesome book: the paperback edition of Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children by Ransom Riggs. We’re giving away a copy of the book, plus 3 delightfully creepy photos (in the true spirit of the book) with a BONUS – the paperback includes a heretofore unseen (and as of yet unnamed!) excerpt from the second book in the series!

ABOUT THE BOOK:

Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children (PBK)

A mysterious island.

An abandoned orphanage.

A strange collection of vintage photography.

It all waits to be discovered in Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children, a spine-tingling YA fantasy illustrated with haunting black-and-white photography.

The hardcover edition spent more than 52 consecutive weeks on the New York Times Best-Seller List. This beautifully designed paperback edition features an exclusive interview with author Ransom Riggs and a sneak preview of the upcoming Miss Peregrine novel.

Favorite time travel TV is definitely Dr. Who — I love all the new doctors! And maybe one day I’ll get around to watching some of the originals….

I really loved the Connie Willis books I’ve read, including the Doomsday Book and To Say Nothing of the Dog. I agree with Mary Ann — there was something unforgettable and haunting about Doomsday Book.

Oh yeah and I’m a huge fan of the terminator movies. What can I say, I love me some governator! 🙂

I’m just about to start reading Doomsday Book by Connie Willis, and I’ve heard it’s amazing. I’m a sucker for time travel anyway so I think I’d love it even if it wasn’t that good. I enjoyed To Say Nothing Of The Dog so much that it ruined all other books for almost 2 months in comparison.

I think there are basically two types of time travel story – those like The Time Traveller’s Wife and Back to the Future (particularly the second movie) which are essentially about time travel and exploit all the possibilities of changing the past, meeting yourself and the ensuing paradoxes; and those like Doomsday Book which use time travel as an excuse to have a person from our time living in another era (see also ‘sleeping beauty’ stories where the protagonist is kept in suspended animation and wakes in another era). I love both!

I think Doomsday Book is irritatingly flawed in some ways (the future scenes, anyone?) and yet it remains possibly the most powerful, sad story I have EVER read. One of the few books everyone should read before they die.

Oh, and I’ve just read and really enjoyed Dream of Time by Nancy Price, which actually does a good job of combining both types of time travel story!

I don’t know if it counts as “time travel” but I love movies where the character has to redo the day, like Groundhog Day, or Run Lola Run. And there is a little bit of time travel in the Meg Ryan movie “Kate & Leopold” and oooh! “Lost in Austen” is a great BBC show.
