It’s Friday so this means we are over at Kirkus! This week, Ana reviews Three Parts Dead by Max Gladstone…
…a Fantasy novel that rescued her from a reading slump. It is AWESOME, folks. Go forth and read the review HERE.

June 11, 2013 at 3:11 pmI just finished reading Three Parts Dead and had to let you know that I LOVED it. So inventive. The world building was fabulous. I became completely immersed in the world. The great thing is that Max Gladstone allowed the reader to discover the world along with Tara and without any info-dumping that would take you out of the world. All the characters were so well drawn and I loved them all, even the Denovo who you loved to hate.
The mystery part was really well handled. There was enough revealed that you could guess some things and feel oh so clever but so much more was a surprise. I did not guess many of the twists but when they were revealed, they were earned and the clues had been laid so the reveals made sense.
Though this is part of a series, this story has an ending and does not end in a cliffhanger (and a big cheer goes to Gladstone for that). And what an ending. Perfect. However, because the characters and world are so well drawn, you want more. You want to read another book to find out what they’re doing now. How are they managing. That is how it should be in a series.
However, from what I’ve read about the companion book, Two Serpents Rise, it seems like a whole new set of characters and location. This is why I call it a companion book. It’s intriguing that he’s opening up the world. However, I hope that the two worlds intersect at some point. Also, I’d like to find out more about the gargoyles/Guardians. I loved them, especially Shale and Aev.
Looking forward to reading Two Serpents Rise when it’s released in October. Lots of potentially great books are coming out this fall, but now this is the one I’m most excited to read.
Two Parts Dead is a wonderful story. I recommend it. Anyone looking for a good mystery, fantasy, thriller, plus great characters should pick this book up.

June 11, 2013 at 3:13 pmOops, that is Three Parts Dead, not Two Parts Dead as I mistakenly wrote in the last paragraph above. Darn the inability to edit my comments.
