Recap of Lost, Episode 12, season 5 – Dead is Dead

it is time to embark on a Ben-centric episode! Woohoo!

Episode opens with a VERY charming, good looking man on a horse getting to the Other’s camp. The bloke has a british acccent so I know it’s Charles Widmore. Who would have thought he would look THIS good on his 30s (40s?). He is not happy that Richard took “one of them” to the temple. I suppose he means Benny. Richard plays his usual trumps: It is what Jacob wanted. and you know that the island chooses who the island chooses…so…there.

Inside a tent, Benny is recovering.

and Widmore, who seems too nice for someone who just 2 seconds ago wished the kid dead, chats with Benny. Ben doesn’t seem to remember what happened to him but says he wants to stay. Widmore says “Just because you’re living with them doesn’t mean you can’t be one of us.”Then he tells Benny that the island saved his life. Ben asks his name, he says: Charles, Charles Widmore.  AAAAAAAAAAAnd, it’s a go, the battle of titans start right here, folks!

We go back (forward?) to when Ben wakes up in the future…

to find Locke staring at him. Come here, my Lockie-poo you can stare at ME any time you want.

anyways, Ben is all like whoooa, you are alive! “I knew this would happen” So why are you so surprised then, Locke asks (and so do I) . “Because it’s one thing to believe it, John. It’s another thing to see it”.

Yeah, right. Then Locke asks why was Ben trying to get to the other island.

Ben says he broke the rules by leaving the island and coming back again. And now, he needs to be judged.  Who is going to judge you Benny boy? oh, just someone you came to fondly know as THE MONSTER! gaah.

On the beach, the new survivors are gathering stuff, getting comfortable.

Caesar asks Ben how he is doing. Then asks Ben what he thinks of Locke. Ben looks at Locke and is all like…you know that guy is cuckoo! Caesar tells him that Locke said Ben had killed him. And Ben, the con-master is all like:

REALLY? cause you know, he looks fine to me. Then he says: “You know, I don’t really remember him from the plane. Do you?  What if… he was already here before we crashed? If he thinks I killed him, then he’s insane. We may be dealing with a man who’s dangerously deranged. Then the question is: what are we gonna do about it?”

Caesar says, don’t worry dude, I got your back and shows his gun to Ben. <<< That came out so wrong.

Flashback time! And it’s Ben and he is a having a bad-hair day. What IS up with this show and people having ridiculous hair in their flashbacks? Anyways, I guess this is supposed to show how young he is. Not working, let me tell you. But ok,let’s pretend we buy it. Plus if the hair doesn’t help with timelines, the fact that the boy that is with Ben here is ETHAN, should. They are watching poor Rousseau.

Ben walks into her tent. He has a gun.I think he is supposed to kill her. Her new-born baby startles Ben and Rousseau wakes up. She tries to reach for her gun. Ben won’t let her. He gets the baby.

Rousseau is all like nooooooomybaaaaaby. But seriously? She does NOT put up that much of a fight. Anyways, Ben says: “Be grateful you’re still alive. Now you listen to me. If you try to follow me or if you ever come looking for me, I’ll kill you. And if you want your child to live, every time you hear whispers, you run the other way.”

Now, can we have a moment here? Remember in season 2 when Ben was captured and taken to the hatch. Well, Rousseau was the one who caught him in that net thing. Didn’t she remember the face of the man who took her child? Ok, so it was 16 years later and she is crazy and it was very dark then but still.

Back in the future. Ben is at his office and he is looking at a picture of Alex.

Locke walks in and asks Ben if they shouldn’t talk about the elephant in the room. I guess he is talking about the small detail of how Ben killed him.

Ben is all like: it was the only way, Locke. Locke says, well, I was about to kill myself anyway…so why did you do it? Well, Ben says, you had some information I needed and then I just didn’t have time to you know, convince you to try again. plus, I was so right biatch, didn’t it work?

Locke is all like: “I was just hoping for an apology” Then he tells Ben that he will help him with him being judged and all. “If everything you’ve done has been in the best interest of the island, then I’m sure the monster will understand.”

Can we stop here again for a moment?Seriously, Terry O’Quinn is looking mighty good for someone his age. I would totally get Lost with him…

where was I? I got momentarily distracted.

oh yes: GIVE THESE AN EMMY ALREADY. I love Sawyer, Desmond, Hurley and thes rest of the gang (you know, minus Jack) but these two? Are the Kings of Lost.

Locke and Ben are getting read to take one of the boats and leave the island when Caesar decides that they can’t go. Locke says, I am only taking one, you can have the other. Caesar asks Ben if he wants to go.

Ben is all like, he didn’t give me much of a choice. Caesar is all deranged thinking he is the boss (cause he hasn’t met Jack yet, clearly). He tells Locke: “What you are going to do is to sit down and tell us how you know so much about this island, my friend.”

The Shaman is all like “You’re in the habit of calling people ‘friends’ but I don’t think you mean it.”Locke is so self- confident these days. WIN.

Then Caesar reaches for his gun and the gun is gone and somehow Ben has it and he SHOOTS CAESAR and he dies. Just like that. Another one bites the dust er, the sand! Ben is all like to Locke, consider this my apology. Ben and Locke take the boat and

go to our island. Home, sweet home. Locke asks Ben about his injuries. Ben says that someone did it to him. Locke is like you have so many friends. Ben says: “Well, I’ve found sometimes that friends can be significantly more dangerous than enemies, John.” sweet. Then Locke tells Ben he knows he is lying about being judged for breaking the stupid rules. He wants to be judged for killing his daughter.

Flashback. Ben walks into the Others Camp with the baby.

Widmore, now older and ugly (boo) asks him why he did not kill the woman and the baby.

Ben is all like Jacob wants this child dead? Then here it is.You do it. Widmore walks away….

And Ben has a sweet moment with the baby while Eyeliner Richard observes.

Back to the future, they see a light in one of the houses in Othersville and they seem to think it could be Alex, or Richard or any other of the assorted ghosts that inhabit this freaking place. Ben walks into one of the houses and scares the beejesus out of… Sun.

Sun and Lapidus fill Ben in about how the losties are back in 1977. Who gave them the photo. Some dude called Christian, they say. He also said that they had to wait for John Locke but hey , the dude is dead, so what are supposed to do.

Ben tells them to look outside…

The man that was supposed to be dead, waves.

Back inside the house Sun is all like, I can’t believe this. It’s impossible! HELLO, woman, where have you been? Locke says he doesn’t know how or why but he knows there is a reason. Lapidus says:

“As long as the dead guy says there’s a reason, well then I guess everything’s going to be just peachy.”

LOL. Then he tells Sun he is all the help she needs but he is going back to the other island. She decides to stay with Locke and Ben  cause she is smart. And she has nothing to do.

Ben thinks this is the time to start the Final Trial and walks into a room with a hidden door.

He goes through a moist, dark tunnel (gosh, what is wrong with me today?)

Then sees this hole full of murky waters and then he pulls a plug?! and says: I will be outside. I am all like WTF?

Flashback: Ben and Alex are playing. Then Richard comes over to tell him that “he” is leaving.

Ben goes to the docks and Widmore is handcuffed and being scorted out of the island! Ben says it’s because: “You left the island regularly. You had a daughter with an outsider. You broke the rules, Charles.” “And what makes you think you deserve to take what’s mine?” Ben says he would sacrifice ANYTHING for the island. Widmore says what about the kid? Ben is all like, it wasn’t the island who wanted her dead , it was you.

“I hope you’re right, Benjamin, because if you aren’t and it is the island that wants her dead, she’ll be dead. And one day, you’ll be standing where I’m standing now. You’ll be the one being banished, and then you’ll finally realize that you cannot fight the inevitable.” be seeing you, boy.

Back to the future. Sun still has nothing to do. I hope she is thinking about the daughter she left behind….Ben comes outside and she is like: Jack must have been wrong about Locke being dead. yeah , although we all know that Jack is usually wrong about a lot of things, he was not wrong about this Sun. Then Sun asks Ben if he knew Locke would come back to life.

“Sun, I had no idea it would happen. I’ve seen this island do miraculous things. I’ve seen it heal the sick, but never once has it done anything like this.””Dead is dead. You don’t get to come back from that, not even here. So the fact that John Locke is walking around this island? Scares the living hell out of me.”

Is he telling the truth here? Because.I.can.never.tell. damn him.

Another flashback and OH DEAR LORD, my heart is racing now. Because Ben is calling Widmore

to tell him that he is going back to the island na-na-naaaaa.  Widmore is all like, the island won’t let you go back. I have been trying for two decades. But first he needs to do something he promised he would do:

KILL HIS DAUGHTER and I am all like panicky aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa, not Penny! not Penny! aaaaaaaaaaaa

Back to the island, Locke KNOWS where to find the Monster. Ben is all like: how does that work, exactly?

“I mean, did it come upon you gradually, or did you wake up one morning, suddenly understanding the mysteries of the universe?” Ben doesn’t like NOT to know things, you see.

Awesome Locke says he knows how it feels to be only a follower and not a leader. SCORE! Then they see the temple. But Locke says they are not going into it:

“We’re going under it.” and I am all like HURRY UP I WANT TO KNOW WHAT HAPPENED TO PENNY.

Sun is not going and Ben says to her: “I need to ask a favor of you, Sun. If you can ever get off this island, find Desmond Hume for me. Tell him I said I was sorry.”

GAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAH. Sorry for what? Sorry for what? WHAT WHAT. If you killed Penny I shall NEVER forgive you.

Back to the marina, Ben approaches their boat.

Desmond is getting groceries out of the car, and is all like, hey you stop right there. what the hell are you doing here?

And Ben *gulps* SHOOTS DESMOND. BEN SHOT DESMOND.

Do you hear this sound my friends? It’s me roaring in pain and rage.

Penny sees it all and she screams DESMOOOOOOOOND. I scream along with her.

Ben is all like, hey I am sorry but your father etc…

Penny is desperate and she is all like, my father? I don’t even talk to the dude.

“Your father is a really terrible human being. He’s responsible for the killing of my daughter. That’s why I’m here.” DUDE THAT IS SO UNFAIR, PENNY KNOWS HER FATHER SUCKS HUGE DONKEY BALLS.

Right then Dope (Desmond + Penelope, in case you were wondering)’s kid, Charlie decides it’s time to show up.

And Penny is even more desperate and urges him to go back inside.

But this sight was just what Ben needed to dissuade him from killing her and he lowers his gun. Not that it matters though because right then, the most incredible thing ever happens:

Desmond! Tackles Ben and …

punches the shit out of him. This is a sight to behold for generations to come. Desmond in a rage protecting his beloved Penny and his son.

and another mystery of Lost is solved: this is how Ben got all bruised and bloody before boarding the plane.

and I thank the lords of Lost that Penny and Desmond are safe. (RIGHT?)

Meanwhile. bla bla bla. Lapidus is back on the beach and is told that Ilana is in charge. and I am like what? ha?

She is all like, rambina and she asks Lapidus: “What lies in the shadow of the statue?”

and I am all like. You have GOT to be shitting me. ANOTHER mystery? another mysterious question that will never be asnwered? And ILANA?

She reminds me so much of Ana Lucia and I want her to DIE. I don’t care about her, I don’t want to care about any of these peoole. Gosh, stop with bringing new people already. She knocks him out cold and says something about bringing him somewhere. Yawn.

Meanwhile. Locke and Ben are inside the temple now. But Ben falls into a hole as the groung breaks.

He falls into a chamber. And forgive me, but the whole thing is starting to look stupid to me. There are hieroglyphs all over the place….

And a picture of Anubis summoning something. As far as I know, Anubis is the God of mummification and after life. He is also in charge of deciding if a person is worthy or not. …

Then smokey shows up. and Judgement Day starts.

Smokey shows Ben his past…scenes of his life. There’s Widmore.

and of course, Alex.

And the moment Alex died. When Ben could have saved her. But he didn’t.

OMG, look at his face. For all his evil plans, lies, manipulations, there is absolutely no doubt how much he loved his daughter…

He sees her death again and and the moment he said: “She’s not my daughter. She means nothing to me. So if you want to kill her, go ahead and…” They shoot her. he breaks down.

Oh the poor man. I think he is toast. How could Smokey let him live?

But Smokey goes away…..!!!!

He can’t believe it. Neither can I! But right then…

Alex shows up. “Daddy”? Ben is all like: “Oh, Alex. I’m so, so sorry. It was all my fault.”

She says: I know and I am like here it comes!

Unpredictably though, she shoves him against the wall!

And she (ok, it’s not Alex, clearly it’s Smokey) “Listen to me, you bastard! I know that you’re already planning to kill John again and I want you to know that if you so much as touch him, I will hunt you down and destroy you. You will listen to every word John Locke says, and you will follow his every order. Do you understand?”

He nods.

“Say it! Say you’ll follow him!”

“Yes, I will. I’ll follow him. I swear.” Oh, the irony. The island wants Ben to follow Locke.

There is fear and pain here. Then the monster is gone.

Locke calls for him. What happened he asks.

A shocked Ben says to a shocked Locke (and a shocked Ana): It let me live.

LOST.

So, there you have it. Proof that everything that Ben did WAS for the good of the island. It even finds his daughter’s death a worthy sacrifice, because really that is what is all about right? Now, what is this Island’s agenda. To consider this man, this lying, manipulative, bastard, worthy to carry on living…man. I shudder to think about what this island is.Somehow I don’t think it’s GOOD.  And I don’t like that “it ” wants Locke.I am glad Ben is still alive though- Michael Emerson rocks my world.

Anyways. Next is a Miles episode. and I have to wonder: WHY? Three episodes to end the season and they give the floor to MILES?

This show drives me nuts. In a totally good way.
