September 16, 2008 at 4:01 pmOne single, solitary favourite fantasy book or movie? That’s much, much too hard for me to answer. It changes every day. But for today I’m going to call Anne Bishop’s Black Jewels trilogy one book and choose that.

September 16, 2008 at 4:37 pmHmmm. Like Kerry, I find picking one REALLY hard! I think I will have to pick The Last Herald Mage (LHM) series by Mercedes Lackey… It was one of the first fantasy series I read (as a teen) and…it was one of those books that spoke to me on so many different levels.
Oh, and I would like to make an honourable mention of To Ride Hell’s Chasm by Janny Wurts. Why? Because, like the LHM series it was a book full of emotion and imagery that spoke to me…and made me cry (as did the LHM). That to me puts both in the keeper category.

September 16, 2008 at 6:46 pmDon’t enter me in the giveaway, for I have this hot little book in my hands already. I just wanted to put in my favorite fantasy book and movie.
While I love the Tairen Soul series, I have just found another series that I’m head over hills in love with: The Entire and the Rose. It’s labeled as SF but is really fantasy-like. I’m in awe of this series.
My favorite fantasy movie is The Neverending Story.

September 16, 2008 at 7:03 pmI tend to go back to books that I read in my younger formative years, too — books that weren't just enjoyable & engrossing reads, but ones that might have changed the way I think about life somehow.
Back in the day, Atwood'sA Handmaid’s Tale rocked my world. It's due for a reread.
(Also smitten with Robin McKinley & L'Engle & Lloyd Alexander &…)

September 16, 2008 at 7:17 pmHmm…I'd have to say all-time favorite fantasy movie is The Princess Bride. One of the most quotable movies ever.
My favorite fantasy is actually a series. The Heralds of Valdemar by Mercedes Lackey. I've reread them to the point of ridiculous & yet still love them. π

September 16, 2008 at 9:00 pmMy fave fantasy movie? Has to be (as trite as it may sound) THE LORD OF THE RINGS, the first one. Loved it. Surprisingly found it true to my memory of the trilogy, which I read years ago.
And thanks to My Friend Amy, have just discovered your blog and love your tagteam work.
Wil be back.

September 16, 2008 at 9:20 pmI think Dragonheart with Dennis Quaid is one of my favorite fantasy films. I have a thing for dragons. I also love The Princess Bride.
Fabulous blog…I will definitely be back!

September 16, 2008 at 10:35 pmMy favorite fantasy book is Sabriel by Garth Nix. Or maybe The Last Unicorn by Peter Beagle. Wait, I’ll put TLU for my favorite fantasy movie, then I can list BOTH. Does it count if it’s animation? LOTR is obviously the classic favorite. But I have a long torrid affair with TLU.
I keep hearing rumors that there is going to be a live action version. *fans self*
The Unicorns trod these paths long ago, and the Red Bull ran close behind them. Mwuhahaha!

September 17, 2008 at 3:16 amGreat choices! I really need to read Anne Bishop’s series don’t I?
I think I have to go with Lord of the Rings if only because it started it all.
Lana
September 17, 2008 at 4:01 amHmm, my favorite fantasy MOVIE is Stardust (though I don’t like the book as much). Favorite fantasy book(s) is definitely the Song of the Lioness series by Tamora Pierce. I grew up adoring those and still do.

September 17, 2008 at 4:48 amGreat!
My favorite Fantasy book is Night Pleasures by Sherrilyn Kenyon. It’s probably because I just finished reading it.
The Lord of the Rings Trilogy Movie is still my #1 Fantasy movie.

September 17, 2008 at 5:49 amhow about i tell you about my most recent fantasy read, instead?
picked up ‘poison sleep’ (book 2 in the marla mason series) without any knowledge of book 1 (or for that matter, that it was a DNF for the smugglers) and was pulled right into the story. not so much for the heroine (i would agree with you on several of her traits) but for the sheer imagination of the story’s main character, a psychically damaged witch with amazing involuntary powers.
(i haven’t read the first two books in the series you are reviewing – please don’t include me in your draw)

September 17, 2008 at 5:57 amMy favorite fantasy book? There are so many books I adore, I’d be hard pressed to have a favorite! Film wise though my fav has to be Stardust. Loved that movie (and the soundtrack!).
Joni
September 17, 2008 at 6:03 amI have a fond place in my heart for many fantasy series, but like orannia, I would have to pick the Last Hearld Mage series by Mercedes Lackey because it was pretty much the first fantasy I ever read and it truly got me started as a reader.
Aymless
September 17, 2008 at 6:37 amThat’s a hard question!
Lots of really great books already listed here… But I think I’m gonna have to go with The Once and Future King by T.H. White (thanks katie for reminding me)
Movie… gonna go with Monty Python’s Quest for the Holy Grail! *g*
CrystalGB
September 17, 2008 at 6:38 amI love the Lord of the Rings trilogy.
Majgie
September 17, 2008 at 6:40 amI can’t pick just one… AHHHH!
Book.. The Avalon series by MZB, or ElvanBane my Lackey and Norton, The Neverending Story by Ende and Manheim. There really are so many that I love I could be typing for the next hour.
Movie… Mostly older ones (80’s anyway) that would be considered cheesy today. The Neverending Story, Labyrinth, Legand…
Please enter me in your contest. I’m a fellow Smuggler! (Trunk of the car until Husband is occupied elsewhere and the books can make in).
Mandy
September 17, 2008 at 6:46 amMy favorite fantasy movie would be The Golden Compass. I’m looking forward to the next one.
Alex
September 17, 2008 at 7:36 amThis is a tricky question…:) I’m hesitating between The Golden Compass and the Arrow trilogy by Mercedes Lackey. Right now, I’m also reading the first book in Anne Bishop Black Jewels trilogy (Daughter of the Blood) and I’m loving it.
Thea
September 17, 2008 at 7:50 amThanks to all for the comments!
I want to play! If I had to pick my favorite fantasy, I would have to go with the Kushiel’s Legacy series. Love those books. If I had to pick one, I’d say Kushiel’s Avatar.(Of course, also love the classic Tolkien, and I love all of the shoutouts to Tamora Pierce, Peter Beagle, Garth Nix, etc!!!)
As for movies…ummm…Princess Bride, Labyrinth, The Dark Crystal, Neverending Story… but at the end of the day I’ll go with The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers. π

September 17, 2008 at 8:26 amAll of Robin Hobb’s fantasies except for her reason Soldier’s Son Trilogy, which was quite a disappointment.

September 17, 2008 at 8:40 amI’d have to say the Black Jewels Trilogy is my favorite fantasy series. Can I call it 1 book since I have the omnibus? lol

September 17, 2008 at 10:25 amHmmmm. Picking a favorite is hard — like Katiebabs, I tend to think that The Once and Future King is the definitive classic fantasy novel, like GWTW is the definitive classic romance (for me anyway. I know, I know, Georgette Heyer, Jane Austen, bla bla bla. Sorry. It’s GWTW!)
Also LOVE Kushiel’s Legacy (see my blog for a giveway of Mercy TODAY, as a matter of fact). Dune is fascinating. I also really love Melanie Rawn’s Sunrunner series from the late 80’s, and Roger Zelazny’s Amber books. Good stuff.
Dina
September 17, 2008 at 10:40 amIt’s The Lord of Thr Rings for me too. I loved them all.
Rebekah (the_littleminx)
September 17, 2008 at 10:44 amHands down my favorite fantasy movie would be The Labyrinth w/David Bowie. I grew up watching this movie, and have never found anything to surpass my love for it.

September 17, 2008 at 1:30 pmI came on over to check out your blog from MY Friend Amy, and I wanted to tell you that this blog looks fantastic.
Can I just tell you that I just love the title of your blog. I often feel like that when I get books in the mail. I think, ok where can I put this so the hubby won’t see it right away and I can claim it has been around the house forever, and he never noticed! LOL
Also, how did you ever get a three column template for blogger??
Thea
September 17, 2008 at 2:17 pmLoving the favorite books in here! And some variation now with Robin Hobb and Zelzany mentions π
I’m surprised with no GRRM A Song of Ice and Fire votes though!
Serena–smuggling is a tricky business under watchful significant others! I find it awesome how many people can commiserate over having to hide their stashes of books. We should have a support group or something, or a Smuggler Liberation Week :p
And the three column template actually is quite easy to customize on blogger! It’s tricky with the ROUNDERS template (as ours is), but you can check out this tutorial if you like to mess around with the css on your own, or do what we did and use a free template from blogcrowds.

September 17, 2008 at 5:54 pmYou guys have got me really interested in this series. Favorite fantasy book? I’d probably have to go with Lloyd Alexander’s Prydain series. I don’t think anything could ever take their place in my heart. And favorite fantasy movie? Yeah, Two Towers.

September 17, 2008 at 8:30 pmMy favorite fantasy movie – LABRYNTH (hence my avatar) with David Bowie and Jennifer Connelly.

September 18, 2008 at 3:34 amUm… am I allowed to enter? *g*
My favourite fantasy book… If we’re going more ‘traditional’ fantasy, I’d go with the Fionavar Tapestry (trilogy) by Guy Gavriel Kay. It changes so often, though! Currently, I’m in love with Melissa Marr’s books. And I’ve always been a HUGE fan of anything by Jonathan Carroll and Neil Gaiman.
I can NEVER answer these questions simply! π

September 18, 2008 at 3:53 amI normally just read your reviews and lurk but I couldn’t resist a chance at King of Sword and Sky. I adored the first two books.
Picking favorites is hard… I love Transformation by Carol Berg, Lies of Locke Lamora by Scott Lynch, and so many others but I’ll leave it at those two for now. Can’t recommend them enough though.
I’m so glad someone else said Dragonheart! Thats one of the best. Also a big fan of Highlander and Princess Bride.
I swear I’m done now… its just so hard to answer opinion questions succintly π

September 18, 2008 at 10:19 pmMy absolute favourite fantasy movie is also my favourite fantasy book – The Lord of the Rings trilogy.
The Lord of the Rings movies are my ideal of how to turn fantastic books into fanastic movies. Peter Jackson did a fabulous job!
Second runner up though is rapidly becoming the Tairen Soul series. I LOVE the first two books in the series and can’t wait for book 3 and 4. Please include me in the draw for King of Sword and Sky.
I’m looking forward to your review and can’t wait to read it.

September 20, 2008 at 4:26 pmI think my favorite would have to be “The Black Jewels” trilogy by Anne Bishop. I know it’s 3 books, but I have the 3 in 1 book, so I can count it as 1. π
