HAPPY SMUGGLIVUS, EVERYONE! Today is our official blogoversary – we are seven (seven!!!!) years old today.
We’ve had a multitude of wonderful authors, bloggers, and SFF fans as guest contributors over the past several weeks. We’ve listed our own favorite books of 2014, as well as our favorite films and television shows. We’ve survived our feats of strength, we’ve aired our grievances, and we’ve reflected on all of our accomplishments from 2014.
Today, we are thrilled to look forward to 2015 – and make a few very big announcements!
We Have A New Look
You may have noticed, but we’ve given ourselves a makeover for our seventh birthday! We hope you like the new site design (and please pardon any temporary wonkiness as we get used to the new setup). We’ve cleaned up a lot of our old clutter and will have some new special functions coming out in the next month, so stay tuned.
A Sale, Free Ebooks & Promotions News
In honor of Smugglivus, we’ve got a few promotions up our sleeves! Starting today, we’re making all of our standalone short story ebooks completely free! Also, to mark the occasion, we’re offering up our recently released anthology – containing all six of the standalone ebooks, author essays, and Q&As – at a temporary price of $1.99. Get your copy: directly download from us now!
And, as we may have mentioned a few times before, we also have opened a Society6 store where you can purchase some of the awesome artwork we commissioned for our original short stories. This week, Society6 is offering up free worldwide shipping for all of our swag! Huzzah!
Announcing Speculative Fiction 2014
We are very proud to announce that Book Smugglers Publishing has acquired the ongoing publication rights for the Hugo Award-nominated and British Fantasy Award-winning Speculative Fiction: The Best Online Reviews, Essays and Commentary. Starting with the 2014 edition of SpecFic, Book Smugglers Publishing will be taking the helm as publishers from Jurassic London – and we could not be more thrilled.
Speculative Fiction 2014, edited by Renee Williams and Shaun Duke, marks Book Smugglers Publishing’s first ever work of nonfiction, and will be on sale May 5, 2015.
Hunting Monsters: The Sequel
In other BSP news, we are thrilled to announce that 2015 also marks the year that we publish the as-yet untitled sequel to Hunting Monsters from author S.L. Huang! This sequel will continue Xiao Hong’s story, and is loosely based on the Chinese Legend of the White Snake tale.
The sequel will be available Summer 2015.
Announcing Cinderella Noir: The Series
Last, but not least in Book Smugglers Publishing news, we have acquired three short stories in a fantastic new series from exciting new author Carlie St. George. The Cinderella Noir series chronicles the investigations of world-weary private eye Jimmy Prince (as in Charming), as he deals with his powerful family’s dirty secrets, deadly dames, corporate conspiracies, and murder.
We initially received and read The Case of the Little Bloody Slipper in our subversive fairy tale submissions last year and were immediately drawn to its Chandler-esque vibe and its clever, noir-ish approach to classic fairy tale characters. We cannot wait to share these stories with you.
The Cinderella Noir series will be published in October, November, and December of 2015.
About the Author: Carlie St. George is a Clarion West graduate whose work has been published in Lightspeed, Strange Horizons, Shock Totem, and Shimmer. Her obsession with noir can be linked to unfulfilled career aspirations as a private detective, and a love of stylish hats. Her obsession with fairy tales can be blamed almost entirely on her sister.
New Podcast
Finally, as a side project Ana will be co-hosting a new podcast with our friend Renay of Lady Business. Set to start in January, Fangirl Happy Hour is going to be a biweekly podcast where Ana and Renay get to fangirl about everything from books to comics, from TV to movies, and from fandom to pop culture. Stay tuned for more news coming soon!
And… that’s it! We have a busy 2015 ahead of us – we hope you’ll enjoy every second of it. Thanks, and as always, we remain…

January 7, 2015 at 1:31 pmCongratulations to all the announcements and yay for podcast and new layout. I find it concentrates my attention better on the actual text ^^ – I love the comment field, too, but I thought your old one was already really good for your average blog, as well . World domination ftw!

January 9, 2015 at 12:12 pmI like the new comment form, but the front page is a lot harder to use now — the latest few posts show up in a slideshow so you cannot see them all at once and there isn’t much text or category information on the front page (category info only shows up for reasonably old posts) so I cannot decide whether or not I want to read any given post, I have to click through.
It looks pretty, but it feels like it sacrificed a lot of usability.

January 9, 2015 at 12:32 pmjillheather – Thanks for the feedback! We are still tweaking things and we plan to add tags to each post so that there is a bit more information there before you decide to click through. Gives us some time, and we will try and sort everything to make it as user friendly as possible.
