As you know, Halloween is coming, and with it, our annual Halloween Week shenanigans. The first official event to kick off our yearly celebration starts TODAY, as we are proud to present you, dear readers, with our first contest in conjunction with the awesome Paper Lantern Lit, a boutique literary development company committed to quality fiction and fresh voices.
Fury by Elizabeth Miles is a Contemporary/Horror YA novel that (awesomely, if we may say so ourselves) incorporates elements of Greek Mythology in the shape of Furies – the embodiment of revenge. Since we both loved the book, we are thrilled to be a part of Paper Lantern Lit’s first ever blogger-hosted contest for Fury!
THE GIVEAWAY:
One lucky person will win:
1) A SIGNED COPY OF FURY
2) A “REVENGE IS SWEET” T-SHIRT (“Revenge is Sweet” logo for shirt above)
AND
3) AN INVITATION TO A CHAT SESSION WITH THE AUTHOR, ELIZABETH MILES
In order to enter, simply leave a comment here telling us which character from Greek mythology you would dress up as for Halloween. The contest is open to ALL and will run till October 30th at 11:59PM (PST). The winner will be announced on October 31st – Halloween! Only one entry per person, please – multiple comments will be disqualified. Good luck!

October 15, 2011 at 1:09 amFantastic question! Diana, the hunter, would be awesome. Not only does she have the very chic toga/laurels combo, but she’s the cause of quite a few constellations and her story is fraught with heartbreak and drama but also beauty, forgiveness, and love.

October 15, 2011 at 2:26 amI would have to go with Medusa. You just can’t go wrong with her and can have so much fun.
Lobo
October 15, 2011 at 3:36 amAthene of course: she is the god of art and wisdom and a tons of other things I love. Plus I’d love to have an owl on my shoulder. 😆

October 15, 2011 at 3:46 amMedusa. She’s got the best hair accessories.
Mandi Venard
October 15, 2011 at 5:02 amPersephone.Goddess of the underworld.

October 15, 2011 at 5:10 amGreat question and giveaway! If I was going to dress up as any character from Greek mythology I would be Aphrodite only because shes the most famous and I would have to spend the whole night explaining who I was to everyone. I would be Nike or Athena otherwise
Katie
October 15, 2011 at 6:09 amPersephone. Either as the goddess of spring or as queen of the underworld.
Vicky Burkholder
October 15, 2011 at 6:57 amFor me, it would either be Medusa (love the hair) or Gaia, mother of all (with four kids and being a former teacher, I often felt like I was everyone’s mom!).

October 15, 2011 at 7:23 amAthena 😀

October 15, 2011 at 7:59 amBeing the animal lover that I am and also a womens rights advocate, I would go as Artemis as the ultimate woman.
She was the Hellenic goddess of the hunt, wild animals, wilderness, childbirth, virginity and young girls, bringing and relieving disease in women; she often was depicted as a huntress carrying a bow and arrows.
Thanks for the giveaway.

October 15, 2011 at 8:02 amArtemis for sure!
Jen D.
October 15, 2011 at 8:28 amI’m all about Artemis, goddess of the hunt. I get to portray a strong woman AND walk around with a bow and arrow? I’m game.
Thanks the giveaway!

October 15, 2011 at 8:33 amEasy question! Medusa all the way!
Amanda
October 15, 2011 at 8:37 amI’ve always been intrigued by Echo, from Echo and Narcissus. I love her argumentative spirit, but then end up feeling terrible for what happens to her. I kinda want to re-tell her story with a happier ending. I would totally dress as Echo for Halloween.
Emily Thompson
October 15, 2011 at 9:31 amI’d definitely be Zeus. The beard, the lightning. I’d have a bit of a problem with his general barechestedness, but I think I could find a way around it. He is in no way my favourite character from Greek mythology, but I think it would be fun to shake things up by dressing as him for Halloween. No one would see it coming.
tess
October 15, 2011 at 9:38 amMedusa! Because I have very long, thick hair in an unusual color, and that just seems like the natural next step. 😉

October 15, 2011 at 10:01 amHey Booksmugglers!
My answer would be any of these Greek mythological figures:
-Persephone
-Aphrodite
-Athena
-Hera
-Nyx
-Hemera
and just for the heck of it (even though I’m a girl) Dionysus,Hades,or Zeus!!=]

October 15, 2011 at 10:08 amI’ve dressed up as Medusa before, but I think next time I’d have to go with Artemis…
Thanks for the giveaway!

October 15, 2011 at 10:16 amAtalanta…only without the odious golden apples.
Tyron
October 15, 2011 at 10:26 amI would be Alastor. Halloween provides the perfect backdrop for a little avenging.
Ashleigh
October 15, 2011 at 10:26 amNemesis, goddess of divine retribution and vengeance. According to certain tellings of the tale, she was the mother of Helen and I identify well with her because I’m big on revenge (it’s not something to be proud of and I’m not, but it’s the truth). I even have plans to write my own novel about her! So yes, Nemesis.
Vanessa
October 15, 2011 at 10:56 amMedusa 🙂 Thanks for the giveaway!
bigfoot24
October 15, 2011 at 11:24 amI would dress up as Artemis!
Raina
October 15, 2011 at 12:26 pmEither Ariadne or Persephone, I love them the most 😀
Breanne M.
October 15, 2011 at 12:33 pmI would probably dress up as either Artemis or Athena. 🙂
Lily Froggy
October 15, 2011 at 2:09 pmI’d love to be Nike with the awesome wings and the drape-dress… but I’ll keep my head on this time, it’s better to enjoy the night!
Rachel
October 15, 2011 at 2:45 pmTwo options:
Persephone, who is really cool because of the whole child/adult, light/dark, life/death, victim/queen aspect – who doesn’t sometimes feel like they have more than one side to them.
And Creusa, the first wife of Aeneas, who never gets much of her story told. All we know about her is that she’s incredibly unselfish, very brave, and gets killed in the siege of Troy.
Beverly H.
October 15, 2011 at 3:25 pmI would dress up as one of my faves: Athena. Thanks for the giveaway!
Allison
October 15, 2011 at 4:21 pmI would love to dress up as Artemis the Huntress, but I’ve always been a Dionysus fan so dressing as a maenad would also be pretty awesome(:
Mary Preston
October 15, 2011 at 5:23 pmI would dress up as Aphrodite. I could have such a beautiful costume. Got to love the love.
marypres(AT)gmail(DOT)com

October 15, 2011 at 5:37 pmPersonally, I think that going as a Harpy would be pretty sweet, but probably an unrealistic costume. So more realistically, Demeter or Hecate.
Sumner Brinkley
October 15, 2011 at 5:45 pmooo probs Athena because i do enjoy knowledge and her sacred animal is an owl and i hav always liked them. Or maybe Artemis because being a huntress is awesome plus she never has to get married and her sacred animal is a stag like harry Potter’s patronus! 😉
Talia
October 15, 2011 at 5:48 pmI would most likely be Artemis, Goddess of the Hunt. Due to my love of Rick Riordan, I got to know a lot of Greek Goddesses and I have to say, Artemis happened to turn out to be my favorite of them all. She represents us women to be strong and independent- in no need of the help of a man. She’s someone I wouldn’t mind worshiping, if I was a Greek.
=)
Victoria Zumbrum
October 15, 2011 at 6:31 pmI would dress up as Medussa or Athena. Please enter me in contest. Tore923@aol.com

October 15, 2011 at 6:38 pmMy favorite character from Greek Mythology has always been Cassandra of Troy. I read Firebrand by Marion Zimmer Bradley when I was in high school and her tragic characterization of Cassandra has been with me ever sense.
So even though no one would know who I was, I’d definitely dress as Cassandra for Halloween
jennifer mathis
October 15, 2011 at 6:49 pmDionisey (sp) cause he was the lord of the drink 🙂

October 15, 2011 at 6:49 pmMadusa would be my pick for a costume. GREAT HAIR.
Kate & Zena
October 15, 2011 at 6:59 pmI’d dress up as Daphne or Hecate. I would love to try to create a wood effect with makeup. But, Hecate is so interesting as a character. It’s very interesting how Hecate takes so many forms in so many cultures, yet Daphne is particular to Greek and Roman mythology.
Hm, I think I’d ultimately choose Hecate, because I could be warmer!
jennygirl
October 15, 2011 at 6:59 pmMinerva since she is the goddess of wisdom, commerce, crafts, medicine among other smarty pants things, a la the first nerd ever.
Thanks for the contest 🙂
sephiria
October 15, 2011 at 7:03 pmDefinitely Hecate. She was pretty much the first witch and super powerful. Can you get any cooler for Halloween??
Thanks for the giveaway!
Archee
October 15, 2011 at 7:22 pmOne of the Harpies, for sure. The only thing is, I’d have to say ‘Trick’ every time and then steal candy, because I won’t be able to eat it otherwise. And on top of that, I get to torture Trojans (which will be an excellent conversation starter if there were some good-looking Trojans around). Mind you, being a general agent of destruction and chaos would work just fine to me. What I like best is how they’re amazing at flying – to belong to the sky in such a way would be unforgettable.
Sara M
October 15, 2011 at 7:28 pmMedusa would definitely be a fun costume to make.
Lauren
October 15, 2011 at 8:06 pmI would be Medusa, but it may be difficult to find a snake wig.
Kristy McRae
October 15, 2011 at 8:07 pmSince I’m a total bookworm, I’d have to go with Athena, Goddess of Wisdom! (Medusa would be my second choice, because the costume would be so much fun to create.) Thanks for the contest!
Jen B.
October 15, 2011 at 8:08 pmI would either pick Fortuna or Tana (or Tanya). They are not as popular but both are seriously good Goddess! I mean either fortune or mother/moon goddess. As a bonus, cool costumes!
Bethie
October 15, 2011 at 9:20 pmI think I would dress up as Medusa. Thanks for the giveaway.
Stephanie
October 15, 2011 at 10:15 pmI would want to be Circe. I just finished reading Gelli’s La Circe, and I love her logical, intelligent arguments. She’s very smart and fair, and I love her non-judgmental perspectives.
KT Howard
October 15, 2011 at 10:48 pmI would totally dress up like Athena. Lurker beware, I have a spear.
OR a nymph. Because the costume itself can be very creative and fae-esque.
Tina
October 15, 2011 at 10:53 pmI would love to be Psyche– I’m not entirely sure how I would dress up with her. Maybe by wearing traditional Greek dress and carrying around a candle? I feel like wearing a blindfold or something would be a proper representation of Psyche, but that could get a bit dangerous on Halloween
Frederikke
October 15, 2011 at 10:57 pmWell this is easy! I’d dress up as Nyx. Not even dress up, really. I’d just find the darkest, most awesomely fluttering clothes I own and throw ’em on. Job done. Life is easy around Halloween when you’re gothic. 😉
Mieneke
October 16, 2011 at 12:52 amI’d dress up as Cassandra. I always thought hers was a harsh fate and her costume wouldn’t be that elaborate!
Sharon
October 16, 2011 at 1:17 amAphrodite as she is the goddess of love and beauty.
Katherine
October 16, 2011 at 1:41 amI’d dress up as Artemis because I always admired her strength and dedication – plus her way with Peeping Toms…

October 16, 2011 at 2:43 pmOh, this is easy because I’ve already done it! Last year for Halloween, I was Pandora (it was a lot of fun rigging the box!). But as far as other characters, if I had infinite resources I would go as Athena, my favorite goddess since I was quite young.
Thanks for the great giveaway!
Brooke
October 16, 2011 at 2:47 pmAthena, goddess of wisdom
Hayley
October 16, 2011 at 2:47 pmThis would probably be a bit tough to pull off, but I’d love to dress up as Hermes someday. He’s my favourite of the gods and I wish that he wasn’t quite so overshadowed by the rest of the pantheon.
Justine
October 16, 2011 at 2:55 pmI would dress up as Athena.

October 16, 2011 at 4:45 pmI would dress up as Psyche, from the greek tale of Eros and Psyche, because I think their love story is one of the saddest and most beautiful.
Tiffany M.
October 16, 2011 at 5:09 pmI think I wouldn’t mind being Hera. It can be fun being a villain. If not, I think I’d like to be Medusa. The hair piece, or getting my hair to be like snakes would be cool.

October 16, 2011 at 5:46 pmMy friends and I dressed up as Roman Zombies for our local Zombie Walk last week (we even mobbed and “killed” Zombie Julius Caesar), but I don’t think that counts.
In any case, I would go as Circe. Kick-ass sorceress with as-yet-untapped costuming potential FTW.

October 17, 2011 at 4:25 amWhat about being one of the Moirae – the three Fates? No one wanted to mess with them! They spun, measured, and cut the thread of life for everyone. Hint: if you see a Fate running with scissors, make sure she’s not running towards you…
traci H
October 17, 2011 at 6:06 amArtemis, the Goddess of the Hunt. 🙂
Chris Bails
October 17, 2011 at 7:56 amI would have to say Medusa. When I was a little girl-about 4th grade. I also dressed up as medusa. I loved it because I scared the other kids. I thought it was funny. I like Medusa, a little young, but I saw a show about her and loved that she had snakes for hair and if she did not like you she would turn you to stone. I thought it was funny. I would love to dress as her again. Plus now I am an adult and could have more fun with it.
Thanks for the giveaway and the chance to win. I would love to win and read this book.
Lauren
October 17, 2011 at 7:56 amI would dress up as the Oracle of Delphi. Then you could go around saying cryptic things just for the fun of it!

October 17, 2011 at 9:16 amAtalanta! She’s so very hardcore, did things in mythology that women were generally banned from doing, and I do believe she secretly threw that race because she finally found a man she fancied. 😀
Amy
October 17, 2011 at 9:32 amI would probably dress up as Demeter, do the whole mourning mother thing. 🙂

October 17, 2011 at 9:38 amPersephone, I think her story is different and quite interesting. I really like her…. and I’m pretty obsessed with book about her(Abandon) 😉

October 17, 2011 at 11:42 amOh, I’d have to go as either Athena, Artemis or Persephone… I’ll go with Athena, Goddess of wisdom, Goddess of weaving (I’m not kidding), the arts, war, justice and skill.
Amazing giveaway, thank you for this opportunity!

October 17, 2011 at 2:06 pmI already have an awesome costume prepped and planned (Miss Piggy! I’m so excited!), but thinking about this question has me maybe wanting to change my mind…..I’d be Artemis, goddess of the hunt, and interpret her Katniss-style. 🙂 Fun question and great give-away!

Cristina
October 22, 2011 at 10:56 pmPersephone! i would wear muted purples, greys and blacks. make myself even paler than usual and carry a pomegranate (or two, in case i eat one i love those things!) and best of all it would fit. What I mean by that is that if Halloween were in the spring I would wear bright greens and yellows because it would fall during the six months she is allowed to leave Hades. But since it is in the fall it fall during the time where she must live with her husband so she would wear what I described above. Lol sorry for the long post, I’m a huge Greek mythology nerd and my favorite story happens to be Persephone’s (can you tell? )
Erin
October 25, 2011 at 6:42 amMedusa. Just making the headpiece would be fun.

October 25, 2011 at 9:07 amMedusa! if there isn’t enough time to do the entire thing, one could go in a Uma Thurman direction in “Percy Jackson and the lightning thief”, because she is about the only cool element in that movie!

October 30, 2011 at 4:43 amATALANTA
Having grown up in the wilderness, Atalanta became a fierce hunter and was always happy. She took an oath of virginity to the goddess Artemis; when two centaurs, Rhoikos and Hylaios, tried to rape her, Atalanta killed them.
or CEREBERUS – the vile three-headed dog that guards the gates of Hades.

October 30, 2011 at 4:49 amOoh, a Medusa costume would be AWESOME!

October 30, 2011 at 7:00 amMedusa. I actually am dressing up as her this here. I’ve had this snake skin skirt I haven’t worn. For my hair I’m going to do some tight curls and weave this string in them to loosely resemble snakes. Its going to be sexy and fun!
