Mockingjay 13 District Blog Tour & Giveaway: District 12 (or, Why Katniss Rocks)

Welcome, ladies and gentlemen, to the penultimate stop on the Official Mockingjay 13 District Blog Tour:

District 12

Despite this coal mining district’s status as one of the poorest in all of Panem, District 12 has no shortage of guts or glory. For the first time since Haymitch Abernathy’s win decades earlier in the 50th Games, for the first time since the inception of the annual Games District 12 has had not one, but TWO victors emerge from the Arena – Katniss Everdeen and Peeta Mellark.

And, while other districts have shed light on everything from music to the romantic entanglements of The Hunger Games books, we District 12 Tributes bring you a look at the reason why these books are so resonan. We’re talking about the reason for the revolution, the symbol of defiance against the Capitol, the Mockingjay herself. We give you:

Katniss Everdeen

I am the mockingjay, The one that survived the Capitol’s plans. The symbol of the rebellion.

~ Catching Fire

A child of the Seam – one of the most dangerous and poorest areas in one of the country’s poorest districts – Katniss has had to fend for herself and for her loved ones from a young age. Following the death of her father in the coal mines and her mother’s subsequent breakdown, Katniss was forced to provide for her family, or starve. At twelve years old, Katniss started to put her name into the dreaded reaping lottery in exchange for tesserae:

Say you are poor and starving as we were. You can opt to add your name more times in exchange for tesserae. Each tessera is worth a meager year s supply of grain and oil for one person. You may do this for each of your family members as well. So, at the age of twelve, I had my name entered four times. Once, because I had to, and three times for tesserae for grain and oil for myself, Prim, and my mother. In fact, every year I have needed to do this. And the entries are cumulative. So now, at the age of sixteen, my name will be in the reaping twenty times.

~ The Hunger Games

But even the meager tesserae was not enough to keep Katniss’s family fed and warm. To survive, Katniss learned to become an expert with her bow and arrow, sneaking out beyond the district’s fences to illegally hunt for food (and then to sell or trade some of that food for other goods on District 12’s black market).

For the 74th Hunger Games, when Katniss’s younger sister’s, Prim Everdeen’s, name was called at the Reaping as the female tribute from District 12, a horrified Katniss volunteered to take her younger sister’s place in the Games. Alongside the male tribute, Peeta Mellark, Katniss defied the Capitol by surviving the Arena not once, but twice – managing to stir up a rebellion in her wake.

So, why do we love Katniss so much?

1. Because she’s brave and stubbornly loyal – when her sister is called, Katniss steps in to take her place without a thought in her mind except to protect her family. Throughout the first book, her loyalty to her best friend Gale and her memory of her family is a driving force in the Arena.

2. Because she’s badass – the only Tribute to receive a score of 11 out of a possible 12 using her skills with a bow and arrow, Katniss is has mad skills hunting and trapping. Her survival in the Arena – in the Quarter Quell and the first Games – is testament to that ability to survive, and her determination to fight.

3. Because she is cunning and utterly capable – Badassness only gets one so far, and in order to survive the Games and the Capitol’s machinations, Katniss has not only had to be skilled; she’s also had to be smart, even ruthlessly so, to keep herself and those she cares about alive. Whether that means putting on a girly facade, hiding quietly in the background, or even killing, Katniss does what needs to be done.

4. Because, underneath it all, she has grown from completely clueless, to empowered and in control – in The Hunger Games and to a certain extent in Catching Fire, Katniss was completely clueless of her own worth and effect on people. (See revolution.) But by Mockingjay, she comes full circle – acting for herself, and taking control of a life that has been out of her hands for so long.

Over the course of the two books, Katniss has gone from a girl struggling to keep food on her family’s table to a Hunger Games tribute, victor, celebrity, and leader.

Regardless of where your loyalties lie concerning the romance, at least we can all agree on one thing: Katniss Everdeen is one awesome heroine. In a sea of bland, damsels in distress, existing simply to serve as arm candy for sparkly vampires, the calculating, defiant Katniss, bow and arrow in hand, stands triumphant.

“The question is, what are you going to do?”

It turns out the question that’s been eating away at me has only ever had one possible answer. But it took Peeta’s ploy for me to recognize it.

What am I going to do?

I take a deep breath. My arms raise slightly — as if recalling the black-and-white wings Cinna gave me — the come to rest at my sides.

“I’m going to be the Mockingjay.”

~Mockingjay

Although I had some trouble getting into Katniss’s character in Mockingjay, I love her honesty. And strength. She’s endured quite a lot through the series, but her nature will always be that of a fighter.

Am I allowed to enter if I don’t think she’s an amazing heroine? I just wasn’t a fan of Katniss throughout the series. She rounded out a bit more during Catching Fire though which I liked – and I do admire the courage she holds throughout the series and her will to keep pushing through what is thrown at here though.

I think Katniss is one of the better heroines out of most novels because she actually grows naturally. Plus, even though she was made into a celebrity of sorts, she is still a fighter and hunter at heart.

Katniss is a great heroine because she is strong and skilled but also has some emotional baggage which keeps her motivated to fight for what is right.

She is an amazing person – not just a heroine, or fighter, or any of numerous other things she had to become to survive. Not all of them good, nor bad, just the growth, and spunk to face life, and continue on.

I think Katniss is a great heroine because she is rational, she thinks of all the consequences and doesn’t make rash/emotional decisions. She also is a believable character in that she is awesome and skilled, but she has doubts and is troubled, as well, by being a heroine/symbol of the rebellion.

I LOVED this series and am still reeling from Mockingjay; in fact it’s been gently haunting my thoughts since I finished it and I’ve decided I need to re-read all 3 this weekend so I can really digest it all. I think the best thing about Katniss is her complexity; she’s such a well developed character that makes her seem so real instead of just some fictional girl in a book. I’d like her one moment and then hate her the next, and then suddenly relate to her and feel simpatico; it’s been a long time since a series/book has grabbed like The Hunger Games trilogy. bellsDOTfrancoATgmailDOTcom

Katniss is great because, after everything, doesn’t have a huge ego, she’s scared, she doesn’t think she’s worthy and she doesn’t believe she’s as awesome as everyone else thinks she is. And what’s also great about her is that there’s no guarantee she’ll succeed at the things she’s forced to do.

I like Katniss because she’s not perfect. She’s very smart and a skilled hunter, but she can’t instantly use every weapon, she totally flounders with interpersonal relations, struggles to be charming, etc. She’s a survivor, with all the good and bad connotations that has, and I love her for never apologizing for any of that.

  • Helen M.
    August 27, 2010 at 5:34 am

I like Katniss, but wish she wasn’t quite so clueless. That said, I agree with Cathy that Katniss is smart and skilled. I also like that she is independent and can, mostly, take care of herself.

Katniss is a great heroine because she’s flawed. The reader is aware from the very beginning that she has a lot of faults and she isn’t perfect. It makes me feel better about my own faults – if Katniss can save her country, flaws and all, then I can do something great too.

I knew Katniss was awesome when she took her sister’s place in the games because even though she’s a total badass, she still loves her sister.

Katniss is an amazing heroine and a strong female character which is often lacking in YA books these days. Part of what makes her so unique is her concern and love for others, to the point of sacrificing herself. In today’s world of selfishness and greed, Katniss is a refreshing change!

I think Katniss is a great heroine because she’s reluctant from the start but steps up and do her best for those she cares about. And along the way she has never forgotten who she is and what she fights for.

I think Katniss is awesome because she is unflinchingly loyal to those she cares about, in obvious and not so obvious ways. I mean, clearly what she does for Prim is amazing. Then, there is during the games, when she forms the friendship with Rue, and she sings to Rue as she passes.

  • Michelle
    August 27, 2010 at 6:06 am

Katniss is simply awesome because of who she is. The skills her father taught her helped her to be able to not only survive in Panem but thrive. She remains fiercely loyal to family and friends, in an era when loyalty can cause death. She is a quick learner and is able to adapt to any situations thrown at her. Most of all, she has unlimited quantities of love and heart. What makes her the mockingjay is that she genuinely and honestly cares for others in need. She is not the cold-blooded killers from Districts 1 and 2 but rather someone who can sing in times of great trial and cry for those in need. She is the penultimate heroine.

I think Katniss is an excellent heroine because of her best and her worst quality-her singlemindedness. Her determination to save Prim, then Peeta, are what makes her who she is.

I think Katniss is amazing because she’s real. I’ve read a lot of reviews that complained about how all she does in MOCKINGJAY is hide in dark corners, but that didn’t bother me at all. I understood it because *I* would want to hide in dark corners. She’s real. She’s not super-human (for the most part). She has a strong will to survive, but like everyone else, she has a breaking point. She reached that point and will never fully recover from what happened to her. *No one* could recover from that.

I think Katniss is a great heroine because she’s flawed, which makes her all the more believable. She’s not afraid to stand up for those she loves, or for what she believes in. A strong heroine willing to fight for herself and to protect her family and friends at all costs is rare in today’s YA fiction.

Katniss Everdeen. The Girl on Fire.
She’s gutsy, she’s hardheaded and she’s afraid to let anyone in her heart because deep down she doesn’t want him to break it.

But Katniss isn’t just a hero. She never wanted to be famous, or even yet, be the face of rebellion. I really admire her because even still, she steps up to lead this war.

After her father’s death Katniss became the foundation of her family’s survival by providing food through poaching illegally and signing up for tessarae despite facing a high possibility of death as a consequence. Along with being the food provider, Katniss also provided her mom and Prim emotional support to help them cope with the lost the father and continue on with their lives. Katniss’ love for those she cared for is what I like her the most. No matter what, whether at home or in the games she always tries to protect them from the dangers thrown to them. Her loyalty is the source that makes her strong-willed and determined to stay alive at all costs.

I think Katniss is a great heroine because she’s not perfect. She makes mistakes, and can be mean or cruel, or judgmental. But she tries to do better, and to do what’s right, and I respect a character who recognizes her flaws and still strives for something good.

katniss is awesome because she was willing to sacrifice herself for her people, and the people of the future. she knew she had it better, becauseshe had an escape and a means ofgetting food-hunting. but while even she was doing badly, she knew others were doing worse, and those are the people she stoodup for. the helpless. the defensless. irespect her forthat, because i don’t know if i wouldhave that kind of courage myself.

I’d say Katniss is a great hereoine because she knows where she stands. She’s pressured by others (Haymitch, Coin) to do other things but in the end she does what she thinks is ultimately right.

Katniss is an amazing heroine because she always thinks of other people rather than herself. In the Hunger Games, she doesn’t hesitate at all to take the place of her sister, knowing that there was a possibility that she would die. She also defied the Capitol when she and Peter were going to die together. She is also amazingly modest, which is very refreshing.

I think Katniss is an amazing heroine because she’s flawed. She makes mistakes but she also works really hard to protect the people she loves– it makes it easy to love her. She’s also very cunning, stubborn, and modest. She’s a great character.

I love Katniss! She had some moment where she seemed to be a bit up in the clouds, but she had shinning moments too. She was an excellent contender for the Games, and really the only one who could pull this whole rebellion off. She’s awesome.

Katniss wasn’t just a tribute. She had a fierce fiery attitude that I admire. Her perseverance to end the Hunger Games and keep all of her loved ones is heart-wrenching. What she has gone through to achieve all this is unimaginable. If these Games were part of the American future, only a person like Katniss would be able to survive.

Because she rocks. Totally dominating all over the place in the Hunger Games, and yet is completely believably vulnerable when it comes to Peeta/Gale/Family/Prim, etc. Strong, yet honest. Great books b/c of it.

  • Chelsea
    August 27, 2010 at 8:47 am

Katniss is a great heroine, because of the lack of truth, and humanity she was shown. She was raised watching kids kill eachother, and being reminded over and over, how she and the other 12s-18s, and their parents, are at the Capitol’s mercy. She beat that, when she took her sister’s place, when she sang Rue to sleep/death,when she took out the poisoned berries, when she blew up the arena, and when she chose to be the Mockingjay. She refuses to be a piece in the Capitol’s games, and will do anything for the people she loves. Her refusal to give in, and accept lose even in the face of death, is shining.

I loved Katniss because she was a reluctant heroine. She never set out to be admired, she did what she did for others (First Prim, Rue, Peeta, etc. The list goes on.)

  • Mandy Clarke

Katniss is so full of strength and character which she gives to those around her, inspiring those fighting for their loved ones and values. She has faults, like her extremely headstrong personality but this only makes her more human in the eyes of the rebel and the readers.

  • Genny Colby
    August 27, 2010 at 8:52 am

Katniss is a strong young woman. One who will what is necessary for her family and friends. She is willing to sacrifice herself so that those she cares about could potentially have a better life. It takes a lot for a young woman of her age to stand up and be ready to take on such responsibility. She does not look for recognition for all she has done, she just sees this as the way life is and steps up to the plate time and time again.

  • michelle brzozowski
    August 27, 2010 at 8:53 am

Because Katniss is a simply a regular person dealing with a very irregular situation. She’s not overly smart or athletic but she knows her strengths and weaknesses and she uses them to win the Hunger Games and save her family and Peeta. Her main purpose first and foremost is the preservation of her family and that is very admirable.

  • Maya
    August 27, 2010 at 8:55 am

Why do I love Katniss? She’s just a girl in a book! Well, not for me. She’s actually kind of my role-model. When Prim was called up to be in the Hunger Games, without thinking, she volunteered herself, and that, right there, is amazing. She saved her little sisters life. She’s also smart, I mean, when Peeta said he liked Katniss and said she was pregnant, she didn’t tell him to “back off” or whatever, she knew it was a strategy to keep them alive.

  • Say Hoque

Katniss is a fantastic heroine because despite her strength, courage, selflessness and stealth, she still has flaws and is human like the rest of us. Katniss is an interesting protagonist because she still has insecurities and weaknesses to her, which reminds us that bravery doesn’t mean not being flawed, it means overcoming those flaws.

Katniss is strong, bold, courageous, and doesn’t allow herself to be pushed around. I like that she stands up for herself and doesn’t forget about what’s really important. It makes me respect her. I hope that my little girl will grow up with the same kind of attributes. It’s a tough world, and it’s important to be able to stand your ground.

I love that Katniss is perfectly flawed, too many heroes and heroines are just so darn beyond reproach they are hard to relate to – without question or thought they jump into action and immediately just do the right thing. Katniss has doubts, makes mistakes, questions herself and that just makes her so much more real.

the reason i love Katniss is because she is so different from normal girls. she is brave, strong, stuborn but can love unconditionaly. she pervails against all odds. she never gives up. she is always thinking of other people; even when for once she could think of herself. Every girl should strive to be like Katniss Everdeen. oh and i agree darya. she should have ended up with Gale!!! he makes her strong.

Katniss is the greatest heroine ever because she does not lose sight of her family and everyone that loves her when she becomes famous. She may have to be girly and sweet sometimes, but on the inside she remains true to who she really is. Also, she never stops fighting. She never gives up. She will never let the Capitol win.

Well to be honest I love Katniss, but I have to disagree with your #4 reason why she is so awesome. If you have read Mockingjay you will see that even in the rebellion which she is the symbol of she still has no control whatsoever. She thought she was the leader of the rebellion, yet she was just simply a pawn for district 13 and this is something you feel as soon as you start Mockingjay. I think Katniss is amazing is because she is such a strong character. After all she’s fought , struggled, and achieved she still remains strong when the outcome is not how she pictured. She has faced so much tragedy for such a young age yet she is still able to cope with the idea that there may be good out there in some people. She’s a fighter and no matter what she will not give up, and I think thats something everyone can look up to.

  • Elie
    August 27, 2010 at 9:07 am

I think what makes Katniss so great is the way she evolves from a girl with a starvation for solitude and independence, to being aware of her dependence on other people. She realizes that she can’t do everything alone. She needed Haymitch’s help in the arena to survive in first book, and to keep Peeta alive in the second. She noticed that she can’t face the nightmares alone, so she asks for help from Peeta to sleep with her. She does all of this without losing her ability to know when she needs to be by herself, either.

I think Katniss is a great heroine because even in the most impossible situations she is able to remain strong, think clearly and make it out alive.

I believe that Katniss is an amazing heroine because she is an unintentional heroine. She didn’t set out to become the face if this rebellion, it just sort of happened to turn out that way. It was unintentional, but what makes her a truly amaIg heroine is that she is embracing it. She sees all the potential of this rebellion and she is willing to play her part in hopes of success.

I think Katniss 8) is an astonishing heroine in this book series because she never gives up and cares so much for others especially rue 😥 in the games and is willing to be the leader of the rebellion against the capital just because she can and the people of panem will follow her through it all

Katniss is amazing heroine. She is a strong girl and by the end of the series a strong woman. Even though she has mixed feelings for both Peeta and Gale, she realizes that she doesn’t need them. Too many women now a’days depend on being with someone. Katniss has set a great example that you do not need to be with someone. She also grows in the entire series. She has strong loyalties to her friends and family. She also has the ability and confidence to make a decision even if it is a tough one. She also has compassion. She makes tough decisions but they are ruled by her compassion but not hindered by it. Katniss is a great heroine.

Katniss is an exceptional young woman. She has values and integrity. Fights for what is right. Believes in what she does. Young people (and old people) everywhere can learn something from her.

I love Katniss because she always does what she wants and still protects everyone she cares about. Katniss seems to care more about other people than she does about herself. I think this is an amazing quality and Katniss does a great job in the rebellion!

I think she’s amazing because even at 17 and having been through all that she has she remains for emotionly sensitive. She doesn’t become calloused to death or killing. she does it but she is still affected by it. A great heroine is strong but still very human.

I think Katniss is so easy to relate to which is a reason why she is a great heroine. She isn’t necessarily easy to become friends with, but she has many qualities that one can relate to. She is driven by those she loves, works hard to protect the ones she loves, isn’t swept up by power, yet she strives for the greater good. Altogether, she is how many would want to be if they were in her situation.

Katniss is an amazing heroine because she does what she believes to be right even when she is afraid of the consequences. She does all that she can to provide for her mother and Prim. She doesn’t wait around for a boy to save her. Katniss has the courage to go out on her own and risk everything to protect the people and the home that she loves. She isn’t perfect but she certainly brave.

I think Katniss is a heroine because she only fights for what she believes in. She doesn’t just go with the flow but thinks about what’s best for her and others, and acts accordingly. Plus she kicks butt with a bow and arrow 😛

I like Katniss because no matter how many times she went into the arena or lost someone she loved she always remembered who her enemy was. She was willing to do whatever she could to help the districts even if it meant her own life. Katniss is my heroine because she disobeyed orders to kill Peeta but didn’t because she still remembered who he used to be and that the new him wasn’t his fault. 😀

There are too many things to say about this book, and too many things to say about Katniss. It’s been awhile since I have read a book that truly engulfed like the Hunger Games, and that is all due to the characters (well, and wonderful writing). Katniss was so easy to connect to; she had so many flaws and irritating things about her, such as her back-and-forth attitude towards Peeta, but that would made her seem oh-so much more real to me, and it made her positive characteristics stand out even more when they showed up. Throughout the series, she really did grow into a true, honest, worthy hero. I love the Hunger Games, and I love Katniss Everdeen!

Katniss is incredibly amazing. She is persistent and strong, while at the same time fiercely protective of her loved ones. She is a hero that we can all relate to – someone not exactly perfect, but strives to do the best she can.

Katniss is amazingly perceptive. I love that she considers what she is saying and how it will affect others before she reacts to anything. She puts others, her mother, prim, Gale, Peeta, even Haymitch, and other secondary characters ahead of her own feelings so much, and maintains this strong front even though she is screaming on the inside.
I love how fierce she is when fighting, and how compassionate she is even for her enemies. She is AMAZING!!!!

Katniss takes the mantel of the Mockingjay… first to survive… then to be great… then to be free… even with all the self doubt and loathing. The prep teams try to replicate the strength and conviction of her character… but in the end… Katniss’ action and words show her heart and resolve. Hoping for more stories about her….

Sometimes just surviving makes you a hero. Katniss did it against all odds. There were so many times along the way that she could’ve given up (and she almost did), but just as in real life, you have to press forward through the misery.

Katniss is an amazing heroine because she never loses sight of what is most important to her-her family and her friends. Her own safety and well being is is always overlooked when it comes to the people she loves. There are so many points where she could give up as most people would yet her love for others continues to pull her through. It’s not often you come across an intelligent, kick ass heroine who doesn’t wait around to be rescued. She is the rescue squad! But what most amazes me is her ability to still be capable of a relationship at the end after everything is said and done. Her spirit and capacity to love was not completely crushed. The fire in her heart continues to burn! I love the girl on fire!

  • Christine
    August 27, 2010 at 9:31 am

Katniss is awesome because she’s working from the strength of her convictions–she decides to do the right thing on instinct and then figures out later how she can survive. But at the same time she’s flawed and has alot of inner conflict. Because of that, you can totally identify with her as a person.

  • Marisa
    August 27, 2010 at 9:33 am

I love Katniss because she is human. Yes, she can be a ditz but she fights to the end in a very realistic way for her time period in my opinion. Many a time she has annoyed me because she has needed to open up her eyes but I’m sure we’ve all frustrated some guy or gal ’cause we didn’t realize they liked us. As someone said, she isn’t perfect. And she definitely isn’t eye candy. She’s simply Katniss.

  • Katie Hambor
    August 27, 2010 at 9:33 am

Katniss has and always will be a survivor, no matter what happens. She is more like Elizabeth in Pride & Prejudice than other heroines of late. She is strong willed, smart, and has many things to deal with that she comes through on. There aren’t many characters-male and female alike- that can endure such events.

  • Heidi Gleb
    August 27, 2010 at 9:37 am

Strong, capable, intelligent, humble, cautious, generous. A daughter, a friend, a winner, a survivor. In times of gloom, she somehow manages to come out on top; in times of joy, she spreads it around. She’s a heroine who just can’t help herself–we love her!

  • Jessica Kanarek
    August 27, 2010 at 9:37 am

I like Katniss because she isn’t afraid to show who she really is, and because everything she does isn’t for herself because she’s selfish, but she does it for her family, her friends, her country.:P

Why is Katniss a great heroine….
    So many different reasons.
She’s strong, caring, and, of course, about a hundred more adjectives that I could throw about like crazy to attempt to prove a point. Honestly, I think Katniss is a great heroine not because she is the embodiment of the rebellion or because she is able to withstand anything the Capitol throws at her because honestly, neither of those are totally true. In “Catching Fire,” Katniss did all she could to stifle rebellion, not flare it up more! And those of us who read “Mockingjay” know what the Capitol threw and how that ended.
I think Katniss makes a great heroine because she is just so human. She has wants and needs, can be selfish, and has a problem with authority. She’s a bit unstable and seems to find trouble around every corner. She is anything but perfect.
And yet, she still finds a way to do what she can to save those whom she loves. It is because of this trait that I believe Katniss Everdeen is a true Heroine.

Katniss, to me, was strength! She had been through so much but never gave up! She was also very bright and seemed to be 1 step ahead of everyone. The love she had for her family was unconditional and was she loyal up to the end of the books! :0)

    ***Mild Spoilers Enclosed***

Collins has told us a story that addresses the horrors, sorrow and cost of war in a REALISTIC way. She didn’t make it pretty, or easy, or light. She didn’t make Katniss a hero. When I finished Mockingjay I was devastated, and I’m not sure I’ll be able to read them again and I’m also not sure that that wasn’t EXACTLY what Collins was doing.

This book is about children fighting to the death for entertainment – and in the first two books it was easy to be entertained. I tried to examine the irony of that – but couldn’t.

Collins REALLY brought home for me the horror of the Games – and the horrors of war and the series will never be the same for me. It’s not entertainment anymore because the characters that I love truly suffered and Collins made it all real.

THAT is why Katniss and Collins are both badasses. To make me love someone for all the right reasons, and use them to teach me something true that I will NEVER be able to forget – THAT is badass.

I think Katniss is a great heroine for a couple of reasons rolled together.

She is a reluctant heroine who wants to see change happen but doesn’t want to be the one to initiate the change…a large part of her just wants to be left alone and to be free to live her life. She has wonderful skills that allow her to be a great fighter but she also has great compassion for (almost) everyone and is frequently conflicted as to the grey area between “right” and “wrong” and yet she has an inherent sense of what is right and she follows that instinct.

    August 27, 2010 at 9:49 am

Katniss is the epitome of the characteristics that anyone would want in her situation and that makes her a heroine. She is strong, skilled, smart, cunning, caring, devoted, loving and a survivor.

    August 27, 2010 at 9:55 am

I think Katniss is a great Heroine because while she kicks ass and takes names, she is also very real. She is constantly searching within herself to find out where the answers lay. She is honest with herself about her short comings and humble about her strengths. She never pretends to be more than she is when it comes to the people closest to her. And she grows into a woman of strength, honest, and character by the end of the series. Katniss ROCKS!!

i think that katniss is AMAZING because she is really brave. In the 1st book she was brave enough to take Prims’ place in the games. Also, she is really smart because she has tricked the capitol like 3 times. ❗

I’m glad the book is written from Katniss’ perspective because the insight we get into her constantly scheming mind really defines her as a heroine. At the same time, I think her authenticity as a caring individual is one of her most uniting traits and make people trust her and want to help her.

  • Calvin
    August 27, 2010 at 10:05 am

Because she is a good person and doesn’t even know it. She makes the right decisions even when conflicted with herself. She tries to proctect those around her, even if it mean endagering herself. She stands for something unique. The true will to live and make life better for those around her.

Katniss is a great hero because she isn’t looking for power and doesn’t exactly want to be the mockingjay. it shows how pure her heart is and how she truly just wants all the fighting and evil to be vanquished from her world

  • Matt J
    August 27, 2010 at 10:07 am

I think she is great because she is put through so much throughout the series and yet still has the fire in her to continue. I wont point on specifics due to spoilers but there are times in each book where anyone would of given up after certain people died yet she took it as a reason to go on. Also she did not need a man to help her she was capable of doing everything herself. Taking care of her family along with others has always been her strongest attribute.

  • Michaela
    August 27, 2010 at 10:08 am

Katniss is an awesome leader and a strong fighter. She will do anything to protect her family and the people she love. She not only has to face life threatening things, but she also has to think about who she really loves. Gale? or Peeta? I have already read mockingjay, so i know what the answer is. But for whoever hasn’t, I’ll leave it open. Katniss is AMAZING!!! 😀

  • Di
    August 27, 2010 at 10:15 am

I think Katniss makes a great heroine because regardless of the danger to herself she always protects the people she loves. The fact that she has so many character flaws only helps make her a more believable character.

  • Jordan G.
    August 27, 2010 at 10:17 am

Katniss is an amazing heroine because she is loyal. She took her sister’s place even though Katniss thought it was a guaranteed death sentence. She and Gale could’ve left the districts and the Capitol behind so many times, but she stayed to care for Prim, her mother, and all of the people of District 12. After some convincing, she reluctantly became the face of the rebellion. She saved Peeta though everyone told her to kill him. Katniss was willing to risk everything, even her life, to save everyone, Capitol or otherwise.

  • Tracy
    August 27, 2010 at 10:18 am

I think Katniss is an ahmazinngg heroine because she risks her life continuously to save her family and friends. When Prim’s called, she doesn’t even need to think before volunteering. And during the Quarter Quell, she does whatever it takes to keep Peeta alive.

  • Kristen Hickman
    August 27, 2010 at 10:19 am

I love Katniss because although fear rules her life, it doesn’t hold her back from doing something about it. Her fear is almost always for others. “What will happen to them if I fail?” It is a remarkable person who can live their life wholly for others.

Katniss is the woman deep inside of us all. The one we would all become to save our mothers, our sisters and our communities. The one we pray we would never have to become… a survivor. That is why we can all relate and love Katniss and still pray we don’t have to be like her. Ever. -RM

Katniss’ only wish and desire is to help other people live, survive, or become better: Prim, Mother, Peeta, Gale, Finnick, Rue, hospital patients, and all the rebels.

She is willing to break all rules necessary, putting herself at risk to help another survive, and she hates being controlled, because she has never liked being the center of attention.

What makes Katniss awesome is her love, her fighting skills, her intellect, her selflessness, and that burning fire inside: Mockingjay.

  • Sandyg02
    August 27, 2010 at 10:31 am

I think Katniss is awesome because her actions (that she didn’t really think about) moved an entire nation which turned her into the mockingjay. She became the symbol of the rebellion just by being herself.

  • Leah

I think Katniss is an awesome heroine because of her strength. Sometimes, she’s even a bit cold, but I actually really like that about her. She has REASON to be cold and calculating, and it would be completely unrealistic if she was completely trusting. However, just when I was thinking that she was completely heartless, she’d do something to remind me that she really cares deeply about so much and so many people, and she really is warm at heart.

  • Nicole
    August 27, 2010 at 10:35 am

Katniss is an amazing heroine because she is genuine. Though she knows how to put on a particular face, she also possesses a sincerity in the moments that make her a resonant character.
She is someone who can be admired because, ultimately, her evolution is believable and can br recognized by everyone. At the end of Mockingjay, we understand that where she ended up was where she truly felt she belonged; we believe her and, hopefully, agree.

  • heather
    August 27, 2010 at 10:39 am

katniss was compelling because she felt so real. she came across as someone ordinary who was thrust into the extraordinary. she never really tried to make herself anything other than what she really is, not even when she assumed the title of mockingjay.

  • Kayti Butts
    August 27, 2010 at 10:39 am

I don’t think Katniss is so much a heroine as she is someone who just deals with everything that happens to her. Especially in the 3rd book she has to deal with the fact that everyone, even herself, is not perfect, and no one is really a hero. That being said, I think I understand Katniss very well: having to choose a side is harder than just standing aside and letting things happen, and choosing the right side is the hardest decision of all.

Katniss is a heroine because she rises to meet the circumstances that life throws at her. She does what she can, which is what most of us have to do in our lives. She lives the life she is convicted to live and inspires an entire nation. She suffers a great deal for her beliefs and still makes it through to the end.

I love Katniss because her love for her family overshadows everything else, even the war, and even over her confusion with Peeta. It’s stayed as strong as the day that Prim’s name was called in the reaping, and was the same and even stronger on the day of her death.

  • Kayleigh Butler
    August 27, 2010 at 10:49 am

Katniss is a breath of fresh air in young adult fiction. I think she is great because she didn’t have her voice yet, being so young, but we journey with her through the series in finding her voice. She has strong resolves to begin with and a strong sense of who she is but I feel she could never expect what life threw at her. So, we see set backs and second thoughts from her perspective but that just lends to her being a well rounded chatacrer and person to admire.

  • Melody
    August 27, 2010 at 10:55 am

Katniss is epic. Although she is a little (okay, a lot) fickle, especially regarding boys, she’s just cool. She’s so tough, she’s been through so much and she’ll go through so much more.

  • Kala
    August 27, 2010 at 10:56 am

I think Katniss is one of the best heroine’s out there, because she’s the tough one, the one that’s fighting. And she kicks butt! She’s got skills. But I think why I love her the most is that she knows it’s ok to break down sometimes, she’s not so fiction that you can’t relate. And, as an avid reader of books, I need to relate to the characters, if I can’t, the books not good. So I love Katniss for how real she is.

  • Christin Dangel

Katniss lives for her family and the people she cares about. Not for herself.
That’s about the best you can ask of anyone when it comes to life. Not to be a hero to yourself but to others above all. She’s a heroin simply because she doesn’t care for her own happiness, she cares about the happiness of those she cares about!

katniss is an amazing heroine because she cannot be controlled by the Capitol. When she had to be the provider for her family, she had to break some laws the Capitol set. When in the arena, after Rue’s death, she placed flowers all around the body showing that the Capitol doesn’t have the grip on her like other people.

I thought that Kat enveloped what every teen, not just girls, goes through as they get older in a way. It was a great demonstration of how you can use your strengths to your benefit, and even improve your weaknesses. Ask my wife, I am not a book reader, but I loved these.

Katniss, in my opinion, is an amazing fighter, she has all the skills for it, but her personality is a little undesirable. She’s unstable, fickle, and doesn’t listen to orders. I felt like she was a little insane at the end of Catching and throughout Mockingjay. Eh. Anyway. She’s cool, but a little crazy.

Katniss is a great heroine because she has so many qualities that everyone can relate to on some level. She’s brave, caring, innocent, fierce, talented, loving, confused, smart, strong, everything. She’s been there. The fact that she has so many believable emotions and so many qualities that everyone, no matter how strong, have. You want to root for you. You want to comfort her when she’s down. You want to push her forward when she’s doing the impossible, when she’s leading. Katniss is one incredible heroine that I think everyone can look up to.

I love Katniss as a character because she seems so realistic. She doesn’t start out with grand ideals and vision of saving the world. She starts out hardened, wanting only to keep herself and her family alive Her emotional and moral growth throughout the trilogy is so well developed, and her character is so very believable.

As a person, I think Katniss’s best attribute is her unwavering loyalty. She will do absolutely anything for those she cares about (although it may take her a while to decide to care about them), disregarding personal comfort and even personal safety.

Katniss is beyond amazing! She doesnt do what she is supposed to, she does whatshe knows is right. She is awesome with her bow too! She is one of those kind people who tries to watch out for more than just herself. Katniss is a badass when she is out on the hunger games field and she doesnt place herself higher than anyone. 😀

Katniss is an amazing heroine because right off the bat, Katniss thinks of the well-being of others before herself (by taking Prims spot in the games). Then, although her motivations aren’t has true as Peeta’s, she does keep him alive throughout their first Hunger Games. When, in the second book, she decides that it is her goal to keep Peeta alive, that is just one more notch on the belt. Then, in the last book, when she learns that everyone around her has used her for their own agenda, she still goes with the flow of things to save Peeta and the nation. She uses her wits to secure the safety of a few people that she thinks deserves it and speaks out eloquently to get her point across (instead of being just their puppet). When she finally learns that nothing will be different when the rebels have one, she even takes care of that without hesitating. Katniss is an inspiration to us all.

I think Katniss is great because she’s such a “real” character. It’s easy to relate to her, which is one of the things that makes the story so compelling… you want to know how things will end up for her.

I love Katniss most of all because of how flawed she is and how often I want to shake her. I think she is such a real person, amazing, strong, inspiring, but so so real. There is no hint of Mary Sue in her characterization as so often happens. She kicks ass, but sometimes she gets kicked too, and then she has to figure out how to get back up and stumble on. Good stuff. 🙂

I believe that Katniss is a heroine in more than one way. First, She is a hero for her family. She pretty much runs the house! She has to clean, hunt, barter with the people around town, and cook for her family. Without Katniss the wouldn’t survive. Also she is a heroine because she was smart enough, strong enough, and tough enough to go through the Hunger Games twice. And last, she is a heroine for all the people who are against the Capitol because she stands up for what she believes in.

Oh Katniss, what can i say about Katniss…. Well there is no doubt that she is probably one of my favorite heros. She is strong, brave and most of all has that great sense of humor we all love, which of course helps in the most difficult situations. But i can honestly say that its hard not to love our mokingjay. 😀

Katniss is a girl trying to survive and in that survival I think learns more about herself then she thought she ever would. She has a strong spirit and determination. When you read this series you are living with them and you’re in the arena. You’re not reading, you’re fighting. I believe she is the spark that the districts needed to really learn to stand on their own. She is brave and willing to lay everything down for the ones she loves. I believe that she makes the reader think twice about the luxury we have in our everyday life. The hunger games will continue to haunt readers forever. May the odds be ever in your favor.

I think Katniss is an amazing hero in the hunger games trilogy because she risks her life and her family to help save the world. Another reason why I think shes an amazing hero is because she is a really nice person and would do anything to stop the capitol.

I find Katniss to be inspiring. She doesn’t seem to be afraid of anything except losing those she loves. Even if she has almost been killed several times she is still able to get back out there and fight for what she believes in no matter the consequences. Sure she may be a heroine, but she is also a teenage girl who is confused about love and has some problems at home. She’s what everyone wants to be.

I think Katniss as an amazing and beautiful character because of all the things she lost just to beat the capitol. She lost her father. She lost Rue. Her sister, Her home, her life. She’s totally kickass, lol. And everybody can at least somewhat relate to her. Having to lie to keep someone you love safe. I just think she’s probably the best character in any book. I love her. <3 Suzanne Collins is a pure genious! 😀

Katniss is an amazing heroine because she peservered, despite all the hardships she went through; she didn’t give up, give in, or back down. She saw where she had to be and somehow, someway managed to get there. (She did go a tad bit crazy at moments, but she brought herself back, which is also an admirable trait.)

I love Katniss because, besides everything mentioned above, she always wants to do what’s right. Not, necessarily what she wants to do, but what;s best fir others. I think that is an amazing feat, that amount of selfless-ness. I also like that she actually has presevingnce and can do things for herself, not ha a guy doing it for her.

Katniss is a beast for many reasons. One how much she loves Prim! Two the way she risks her life all the time! Three the way she trusts nobodyvuntil she really knows them. Four the way she is the mockingjay… the face of the rebelion! Five her courage. Six her neverending love towards Peeta 😉

Katniss is a great MC. Yes, she has flaws…she’s a teen girl in a horrible situation and we all have flaws…but her brains, brawn and bravery are amazing. It has been said already, her greatest gift is her selflessness, though it often leaves her vulnerable and it seems like she’s making the wrong choices for herself. Some people see it as a weakness, but to be kind and to love and help others is really a strength. I would be so proud to have her as a daughter- worried and scared a lot- but proud 🙂

Katniss is a refreshing break from the heroines given to us in recent literature (looking at you, Bella) because of her strength, smarts, tenacity, loyalty and passion. Men, while nice to have around, don’t define this independent girl’s existence. Dare I say young women finally have a worthy role model?

    August 27, 2010 at 11:55 am

Katniss is an amazing heroine because she cares deeply about her mom and Prim. Even while in the Hunger Games arena, she constantly worried about their safety more than her own. She cares about the people of District 12. Katniss said that if she were to die in the Hunger Games she wanted Peeta to win so that District 12 would get food. Also, Katniss took Prim’s place when she was chosen to go into the Games. To me, Katniss is a TRUE heroine.

  • Kristin Nelson
    August 27, 2010 at 11:58 am

Katniss is an awesome heroine because she doesn’t depend on any guy to live, she even says in Mockingjay that she can survive without Peeta and Gale. Also, Katniss is has some pure aspects about herself, knows what her priorities are, and always puts her family and other loved ones and their needs above her own- a true heroine.

    August 27, 2010 at 12:00 pm

I think Katniss is amazing because of how she approaches her sacrifices. She doesn’t even think about not volunteering to protect Prim. Her thoughts after finding about the Capitols ministrations are all about her family. While she may be a little slow on the uptake and prone to ignoring anything she doesn’t like, she’s not afraid to stand up for what she believes in. And when her back is against the wall, she does what she needs to to survive.

I think Katniss is an amazing heroine because she’s skillful and headstrong. She knows what her goal is (most of the time) and she’ll fight to obtain it. She doesn’t need a man to lean on. She hasn’t run away from all this pressure. She’s still here to stay as an incredible character.

  • Monna
    August 27, 2010 at 12:08 pm

The reason I love Katness Everdeen is because she’s selfish, smart, and an emotional pendulum; in other words, she’s a real person. No mary-sues or breathtaking beauties here, Katness is as real as you can get for a person in her circumstances. She never really tries or wants to be anything other than what she is (extenuating circumstances aside) and her character stays true an honest to all of her faults.

I think Katniss is a great heroine because of her adaptability. She provided for her family after her father died, she basically became the head of household when her mother couldn’t manage and she saved Prim from the games. In every situation she finds a way to overcome her fear and cope with the situation and protects the people she loves.

Katniss is the kind of heroin that, sadly, we rarely see in this dismal world. She’s incredibly brave to stand up for what’s right and protect her family. For someone who has had little schooling her intelligence knows no limits. She deservers to have the readers by her side, because that’s where I’ll be-even if just in my mind-by her side through torment and triumph! Down with the capitol!!!! Down with President Snow!!!

Katniss is a great heroin because she shows how average people can become great and she can help people just by being herself and doing what comes naturely without any special training. The whole situation makes you excited about what she is doing even though it isn’t real.

I love Katniss because of her inner strength. She doesn’t let anyone take her for granted and she doesn’t let the world and anything bad bring her down. Surviving the Hunger Games and leading the rebellion is an outward display of all of her strength and determination.

Katniss is an awesome heroine because she is selfless throughout the entire trilogy. Her self-sacrifice is especially apparent when she volunteers as tribute to save Prim in the Hunger Games, but it also shows in Catching Fire when she helps Bonnie and Twill in the woods. Even in Mockingjay, everything she does for the resistance is to aid the rebels and give hope to the citizens of Panem caught in the crossfire of the war. Katniss’ unselfishness not only makes her a great heroine, but also a great person.

I think that Katniss is an amazing heroine because she’s strong and brave, but most of all, because she is such a selfless character. If you think about all that she does through out the books, she always keeps her family and loved ones in mind and how it will effect them. Prim most of all, but she also keeps Peeta and Gale in mind and anyone else that she cares about. She is fiercly loyal and in a way, she also lives passionately in her own way. She is a great role model for young girls.

  • Emily R
    August 27, 2010 at 12:44 pm

I think she’s an amazing heroine because she’ll do whatever it takes to get the job done. She very selfless and she won’t give up. In Catching Fire, she did everything she could to keep Peeta alive and she broke after she thought she had failed. In The Hunger Games, She made a promise to win for Rue and Prim, and she won for them. She knows what she wants and she won’t let anyone else interfere with what she KNOWS she wants.

Katniss is incredible because she reads people so well.

Everyone knows about her thousands of unspoken conversations with Haymitch–how those two get each other so well. Not only does Katniss understand Haymitch, but she also understands Peeta, Prim, her mother, Gale–the list goes on. Her incredible knack for understanding what people mean and are trying to tell her is a key element to her many successes.

  • Brenda
    August 27, 2010 at 12:44 pm

The reasons of why she is an amazing person are too many for anyone person to mention without writing a book just on why she’s so great. but here are some(of the inifinite)reasons:
-she’s self-less(even though she wants to just leave and let the coins fall where they may. she sticks through, caring for her family, friends and others who she doesn’t really know.Few charecters(in books and real people) have even an ounce of what she has)
-she learns so fast and can adapt to practicaly any situation she’s thrown in.
-she has such a natural survival instinct(both in the wild and with other people)
—Overall she’s an amazing role model for everyone to follow—

Katniss was amazing from the beginning, while her mother was wasting away in depression and her sister Prim was too young to do anything for the family. Katniss stepped up and fought to keep her family alive. She didn’t even hesitate to sacrifice herself in order to take Prim’s spot in the Games. Her natural gift to survive in the harshest conditions was monumental in her survival in the Games and life in district 12. She continuously shines as a beacon of inspiration and hope for the oppressed districts.

I think Katniss is the one of the best heroines I’ve ever read about in YA. While she’s very damaged from the life she’s endured, she remains strong and sticks to what she’s trying to achieve, no matter what. Immediately after her father died and her mother became distant, she stepped up to the plate and took responsiblity and I believe that shows what kind of person she is. She’s honest–brutally honest–and I like that about her. She doesn’t need to constantly be saved from herself or the danger she faces. She’s pretty badass, what with her skills with the bow and arrow and the way she takes out the other Tributes in the Games. And she’s always unpredictable. Like many of things she did in Mockingjay, well, they surprised the pants off of me. I don’t think I’ve ever loved a book character more than I do Katniss. Well, besides Prim. 🙂

    Great post and giveaway!

I think what really drew me to Katniss in this series was her determination and strength. The fact that she survived the Hunger Games twice is astounding, and that she had the will to do so made me really respect her. Also, not everyone could be so courageous as to volunteer themselves to save their sisters life, and by trying to save her family’s life through the years as she hunted illegally in the woods, signed up for the tesserae numerous times, and generally supported them when her mother couldn’t. Adding this to the fact that she IS a badass (what with her amazing bow, knife, and snare skills) and her cunning thinking, Katniss is a really ideal example of feminism at it’s best! Katniss can do anything and more than most men can do, and I love that she is not just sitting on the sidelines and waiting to be rescued. Taking advantage of these aspects she became an amazing and fearless leader for the rebellion, giving everyone strength and hope. All girls should say they want to be Katniss when they grow up :)!

I began to love Katniss when she took Prim’s place.
She is so strong even in the face of her worst nightmares.
Katniss grew on me as I was with her in the arena.
She grew on me as she began to fall for Peeta.
I cried when she decided to be the Mockingjay.
Even though I hated Mockingjay, Katniss’ character grew a lot in the third book. In the past few years I’ve seen her grow from a scared kid who only wants to protect her family, to a wonderfully strong, loyal woman leading her country in rebellion.
She will always be one of my favorite literary characters of all time.
    Go Katniss! 😀

I’ve loved Katniss from the beginning… because of her mental attitude and morals.

I’m not sure how, but during the first chapter of The Hunger Games the first time I read it through I imagined Katniss as a male. Just a more empowered and in control figure and that Gale was her best friend with no love interest in mind.

I’ve also decided long ago what I would name a male child of mine, but now I know the Christian name I’m going to give a female child if I have the opportunity: Katniss.

Katniss does the best she can under the circumstances. This does not meant that she does everything perfectly or knows what to do and when to do it. Even though she’s made older due to her upbringing, she’s still a teen and acts like one at times. All this makes her a good character that the readers can sympathize with and relate to (which is good because she’s the one through whom we get to know her world).

  • Anna
    August 27, 2010 at 1:15 pm

I think Katniss is wonderful because of her power to continually find and fight for that and those whom she loves. The majority of the other fighters have become desensitized, and simply view the plight of Panem as sad. Katniss however, despite being tough, is so irrefutably kind that each wounded child, each bombed building rekindles her passion for the people and reminds her why she fights. Moreover, she uses this passion to fight for the people of Panem, not for herself.

Because she is willing to sacrifice her life to save her loved ones. She proved this when she signed up for tesserae, when she goes hunting illegally, goes to the black market, put her self in the hunger games to save prim, plays along in the games, and that’s just in the first book.

Katniss isn’t just a great herorine. She is an extraordinaire herorine. When I first read the Hunger Games I could feel her pain, her emotions, her world crumbling down. But she faced it, her destiny, and made it something great. Her love for Prim is incredible, she just has so much love in her heart that she shares it with everyone. She also sorta loves Buttercup. She is the best big sister in the world. Peeta hs two older brothers, one was too old and the other one was just plain scared, to really do what Katniss did for Prim. She is the perfect example of a strong young woman evolving in to an adult. At first I hated her character, but then I saw her yelling to be a volunteer and thats when the book and her mind grabbed me an didn’t let go untill I finished. All I have written is what makes her an extraordinaire herorine! Go Katniss! 😀

Katniss can’t be described in a few words, she’s just too amazing. She’s witty, caring, determained and just straight up awesome. the way she things is just…whoa. I don’t even know. I wish I could be more like her because she is brave and still loving. She’s way different from any character I have ever read. Now that the hunger games book series is over I will miss her 🙁

Katniss is awesome because she had serious skills, and is so willing to fight for what’s important to her. Whether it be Prim, Peeta, Gale, or anyone else, she’s willing to go out, risk everything, just to save them.

I think this is a trick question. Katniss isn’t a heroine. That’s what makes this story so irresistible. She is very normal and uses skills that she has learned from childhood. It is everyone’s persona of her that makes her a heroine. But in reality she makes mistakes, kills, loves, laughs and looses. Just like a normal human being.

Katniss is a gem among heroines and always will have a place in Americas heart because she has told us what north America will become if we don’t change. She never backs down to a fight, if she doesn’t know what’s going on she won’t just stand and ask she will act like she knows what she is doing and will soon figure it out. Always will Katniss be the heroine of the hunger games no matter who wins because she did more than survive, she witnessed hurt, pain, ambition, love, and loss all that is weight upon her shoulders and her only way to get rid of that weight is to destroy the Capitol and the hunger games. When she does that all of that weight is destroyed along with it and she has freedom and victory!!!!

Katniss is an amazing character because she is very relatable. She goes through tough times, but even while making mistakes, learns and get’s through it. She is very loyal to her family and will do anything for them which is something we can all relate too.

ALthough I haven’t read mockingjay yet 😥 I still think Katniss is the best character. K, she can obviously fend for herself. She is cool, doesnt procrasanate, (which believe me, i’m an authority on) and she’s again, cool. she fights for her loved ones(FYI Gale, her family, Peeta, district 12,) she doesnt always kiss people kin Finick or the careers buts, se instead befriends people like Nuts and Volts, or Beetee and Wiress.

And of cours, shes a good shooter
and her suits are preety cool (Kudos to Cinna) theyre hot, … just like her!!

I think Katniss is a terrific heroine because she she shows young readers that young women can be strong, smart, and independant. As a mother of two daughters, that is priceless!!

Katniss makes a great heroine because there’s almost no other heroine like her. She’s strong, smart, and independent. I got my little sister reading the series mostly because Katniss is a good role model. She’s not perfect, but she works hard at everything she does.

    August 27, 2010 at 2:10 pm

I love Katniss for many reasons, the ones stated and mony others, some of which are that she cares so much for the people around her (Prim, her mother, Peeta, Gale, Cinna) and will do everything in her power to protect them, even if it means giving her own life. She is such a devoted and powerful individual, and there’s not one better suited to lead the rebellion!
    TEAM KATNISS!!! 😀 😆 8)

I believe that Katniss is an amazing heroine because she is responsible and can take care of herself. She doesn’t let some man swoop in and act all helpless while he takes care of her, like in a certain novel that I know of *cough cough Twilight cough cough*. :]

    August 27, 2010 at 2:25 pm

I loved how REAL she is. I felt like she was relate-able, and acted like a girl would if brought into those circumstances. Even though I am still not sure what I think about Mockingjay, I still love this series.

Hello, I think what makes Katniss a heroine is she never gives up. She always stands up for her self & her family/friends. She is different, she has her own ways to deal with things. Her personality is very strong.Something which i have learned from her. Also, she has a heart for her family & friends. She would put her life in danger for them. Katniss is an amazing person.

Throughout the whole of three books, sure she makes some major changes, but she stays the same stubborn, skilled, great, impulsive girl who is strong beyond belief but still has her flaws. After reading these books I can honestly say that Katniss Everdeen will forever be my role model.

  • Sarah
    August 27, 2010 at 2:45 pm

Katniss Everdeen, a girl who lost her father at the age of 11, who was the sole provider for her family, who took on extra tesserae so her sister didn’t have to, and sacrificed herself to the deadly Hunger Games in place of her sister. Katniss showed bravery and courage, and that was before the real adventure even started. Throughout all three books Katniss Everdeen proves herself to be an amazing Herione not only because of her courage and bravery, But because of her firey determination, and her instincts to trust her gut.

Katniss is an amazing heroine because she never gives up. Even when things went wrong Katniss never lets the Capital win. She is real. It is so easy to connect with Katniss because her emotions run deep. She tries to come across as tough guy letting nothing bother her but we all know she has a soft heart for the things that matter. Gale, Peeta, Rue, Finnick even Haymitch just to name a few. I love Katniss she is one tough chick!

I believe Katniss is a wonderful Heroine because she symbolizes the strong, beautiful woman hiding inside all of us. Without doubt, we can see one aspect of her that we would love to have. She thinks along the same lines as we do and she even has the same boy issues that most of us do. Her battle in the arena is like the one raging inside each of us every day. Each decision she has to make mirrors the ones we have to make, though hers are on a much larger scale. I believe Katniss is the epitome of who we want to be.

Katniss is an amazing heroine because her imperfection makes her perfect. She’s ignited by passion and love. Her character has so many layers, and the best part is that certain layers stick out to one reader, while another layer will catch the attention of another. If there’s a word to describe Katniss Everdeen, it’s balanced. She’s what we all want to be: strong, driven, caring. She’s also what we all are: human. There’s a little Katniss in all of us; and that is why she’s such a real character.

  • Faith
    August 28, 2010 at 4:02 am

How is Kattnis not an amazing Heroine? She’s unselfish, a fighter who is WAY more bad-ass than any males in the series, has this strong aura about her that makes her character hard to resist. Even though many of the readers have most likely not gone through what she has you automatically feel an connection to her and can relate to her feelings. She’s also a strong person. I mean who can’t like that?

  • Melissa Hughes

Katniss is willing to endure tremendous amounts of pain, the loss of those close to her, even the loss of her own life in the name of what she feels is right.

Katniss is a great heroine because she’s just so… human. She’s strong. She’s smart. She has trouble making hard decisions, but always does the right thing. She makes mistakes. She volunteered her life to save her little sister. She saved Peeta from death. Katniss is a girl of courage, strength, love, and compassion.

    August 28, 2010 at 7:10 am

I liked Katniss until Mockingjay, she was kind of dramatic about things towards the end… But in the first she was strong and brave, willing to risk her life for her family. She was a person to admire and look up to.

  • Amy
    August 28, 2010 at 7:12 am

Katniss is awesome because she doesn’t take crap from anyone. She stands up for what she believes in, but does not ignore the cost. She protects her family and friends as much as she sees possible while she rebels.

Katniss is an amazing heroine because she’s strong enough to make her own decisions, even when all seems lost, and have others follow her, not because she’s a symbol, but because she’s doing what needs to be done.

    August 28, 2010 at 7:25 am

Katniss is a great heroine in the Hunger Games trilogy. She always done what she thought was the best way to protect her family and friends that are close to her. She not only won the 74th Hunger Games but the 75th as well. That takes alot of strength and determination, not to mention skills to do. Although I really enjoyed Mockingjay i was dissappointed with the ending. I will not write anymore than that in case someone has not finished it yet!

    August 28, 2010 at 7:39 am

Katniss is everything from caring, protective, and strong, to intelligent, agile, and considerate. Her badassness reaches through the text and makes her part of you, and you part of the story. More than anything, she’s human; as normal a person as any of the readers. She’s just able to adapt her life experiences to her overall survival in her world.

  • Elizabeth E.
    August 28, 2010 at 8:11 am

I like the rebel in her. for like how she doesn’t let pep;e tell her what to do if she has other plans, or if it won’t work. through out the books i always respected her for that.

  • Nick Reed
    August 28, 2010 at 8:36 am

Katniss is not only strong willed but she has a perseverance that’s not often seen. Her drive is the kind that only a fool would get in the way of. She is also a warrior to be reckoned with, and is cunning, smart, and not afraid to do whatever it takes to protect the ones she loves. Even if the cost is her life. I also admire how much she can go through before she looses hope. She endures far more than most people could ever even think of. If anyone can bring down the capitol and restore peace to Panem, it’s Katniss Everdeen.

  • Laura

Katniss is stubborn, the point of stubborn that ends up saving her and peeta’s life. she took on the smallest and lightest competitor when nobody else would. she is so strong that she saw Rue die in front of her and walked away, sad yes, but with her chin held high. she is strong mentally, emotionally, and physically.

  • Mary Catherine
    August 28, 2010 at 9:07 am

I like Katniss because she is a strong person. Not just in the fighting sense; but she is also strong willed. She doesn’t give up and fights for what she believes in. I also find her very refreshing from other heroines because of her honesty and her ability to get through everything and still manage to keep those she loves close. Not only that but Katniss is also a very relatable character because of the struggles and indecision she goes through that is much like our own struggles through our teenage years.

  • Elizabeth
    August 28, 2010 at 9:09 am

I simply love Katniss because even though at times she doesn’t feel worthy or capable of being the symbol of rebellion she is strong, patient and selfless enough to understand that she inspires those around her. She gives others something to believe in and serves as a reminder to everything they are fighting for…freedom from control, freedom from oppression and chance to make a new life for the world they live in.

Katniss is an amazing herione because she acts like a real human being not some invinceable super hero. She feels pain and grief and sometimes can even lose herself in these emotions and yet, she has the ability to get back up and do what needs to be done. She is uncertain of herself at times but this helps her to act based on the needs of others. Katniss is amazing because she can symbolize different things for people like strength, retaliation, endurance, etc.

  • Michelle
    August 28, 2010 at 1:51 pm

Katniss is truly one of the best female protagonists ever. She has strength, vulnerability, courage and loyalty all of which propell her forward when so many people, myself included, would curl up into the fetal position and give up. No matter which side a person falls on in the romantic equation I think it’s safe to say that we are all Team Katniss.

Yeah i wasnt a total die-hard fan of Katniss. I liked her though. Yet I liked Peeta more. Like Katniss said, he always knows the right thing to say, when others don’t. And he has many friends, is sweet, and probably the perfect guy. He also has amazing blue eyes, which I’m a sucker for 😀 i really like him. 🙂 I also like Gale. He’s funny, smart, and handsome! 😀
