Welcome to Smugglivus 2009 – Day 17!
Throughout this month, we will have daily guests – authors and bloggers alike – looking back at their favorite reads of 2009, and looking forward to events and upcoming books in 2010.
Today’s guest: Alice Morley, Assistant Manager (Brand and New Media Marketing) for Little, Brown Books for Young Readers. Alice is going to tell us what to expect this spring from LBYA plus a most awesome and generous ARC giveaway!
Ladies and gentlemen, please welcome Alice:
2009 has been a fab year for LBYR with an extraordinary number of New York Times bestsellers and starred reviews. But that’s just bragging! What’s been most fun and exciting for me has been seeing some of our great debut authors and novels get truly embraced and supported within the blogosphere, getting great word-of-mouth buzz out for titles like Hate List, Ash, Twenty Boy Summer, and, most recently Beautiful Creatures (now a New York Times bestseller!). So thank you to everyone who has featured and reviewed our titles over the past year!
Looking forward to 2010 we have another clutch of stunning debut novels. Kathryn from S&S UK has already talked about 13 Curses; well, US readers will have the chance to discover this exciting new series when we publish 13 Treasures, (the first book in the series) by Michelle Harrison, in June! It’s a middle-grade novel but definitely for the older end of the spectrum as the fairies are certainly no Tinkerbells! Michelle Harrison really draws you in with a great mystery as well as a gutsy heroine.
My favorite YA novel for next Spring is hard to pick, but high on the list is definitely Sisters Red by Jackson Pierce. Jackson has taken the Little Red Riding Hood fairy tale and really turned it on its head: our heroines Scarlett and Rosie are awesome hunters who battle with the Fenris (the werewolves in the book) with axes and blades. Is it wrong to admit that I also have a crush on the love interest Silas?! I know he’s fictional!!
LBYR is definitely becoming known for its strong YA titles in the paranormal category (what else would you expect from the home of Twilight!), and together with Sisters Red we also have Ship Breaker by Paolo Bacigalupi, a dystopian tale of a future world where the earth’s resources are scarce; Guardian of the Dead by Karen Healey, a mystery steeped in ancient Maori culture; and the highly anticipated sequel to Prophecy of the Sisters: Guardian of the Gate by Michelle Zink. Now you can see why I’m excited about the Spring (and not just because of the warmer weather!).
Thanks so much to Ana and Thea for inviting me to join in the Smugglivus celebrations – see you all in 2010!!

I’m looking forward to Guardian of the Dead.
18
I really want to check out Guardian of the Dead and Ship Breaker.
19
Ever since I found out what Sisters Red is about, I’ve been dying to read it. LRRH is one of my favorite folk tales and this looks to be a fascinating take on them (love the cover as well). I’m also looking forward to 13 Treasures. And I STILL haven’t read the Prophesy of the Sisters but I swear I’m getting around to it (hopefully before the sequel comes out).
20
My goodness, I am SUCH A book whore at Christmas time.
Truly, give the cover artist for Sisters Red a bottle of scotch or something because that is THE most striking and beautiful cover I’ve seen in a LONG time.
21
Fantastic Giveaway!
22
I’m looking forward to 13 Treasures.
23
Sorry for repeat comment–problems with computer.
Sisters Red
24
Ship Breaker and Sisters Red both sound great! Thanks for the post and contest!
25
I’m very interested in the Sisters Red. I LOVE reimaginings of fairy tales, and I love any girl that can wield an axe.
Also, Guardian of the Dead. Maori culture? Count me in. Anything a little beyond the norm sounds great to me.
26
I’m especially looking forward to reading Sisters Red. I’m doing a ‘Once Upon A Time’ reading challenge in 2010, and I’ve promised to read and review it already – but I’m getting more excited the more I hear about it. All of these releases sound awesome, though – YAY!
27
I think Sisters Red sounds like an awesome book – and the cover! It’s gorgeous, and I’d pick it up just for that. Great contest!
28
I’m looking forward most to Ship Breaker and Guardian of the Dead. But, oh, that cover of Sisters Red is amazing!
29
13 Treasures. It looks fantastic!
30
Definitely Prophecy of the Sisters: Guardian of the Gate! So excited! Actually excited for all of them! I always expect the best from LBYR!
31
Ooo this is hard! I think I’m looking most forward to Sisters Red! But the others sound great too!
32
Guardian of the Dead! Guardian of the Dead! Karen Healey FTW!
33
I can’t wait to read Guardian of the Dead and Paolo Bacigalupi’s Ship Breaker. I read the first 50 pages of Ship Breaker at a workshop and MUST find out how it ends!
34
I’ve been reading Karen Healey’s blog for years and am so excited for Guardian of the Dead!
35
I’m looking forward to Guardian of the Dead’s release because it is an incredible book and Karen a wonderful, smart woman, but oh, wow, how much do I want to read Sisters Red? SO VERY MUCH. Werewolves! Girls fighting werewolves! Sisters! It basically sounds like everything I want from a book.
36
Guardian Of the Dead and Ash intrigue me the most.
37
I’m curious about Ship Breakers — I’ve read Pump Six and Windup Girl, and I think this author’s really interesting.
38
So hard to choose! But I think I have to join Team Sisters Red, because it has bladed weapons in it. Team Guardian of the Dead is awfully seductive, too, but girls-with-swords is what my whole family wants.
39
Sisters Red sounds amazing. I’ve been hearing lots of buzz. Can’t wait to read it.
40
these all look delicious! I had to go back and read about 13 curses because 13 treasures sounded excellent! sisters red also sounds fantastic! i wish there were books like these when i grew up. there was so little to draw the young reader back then. i have been making up time with all the great ya titles that are coming out now! lol!
41
I’d really love to read Sisters Red, because honestly the cover art enchants me (and I’ve already snuck a peek at Guardian of the Dead).
42
Sisters Red not only sounds awesome; it looks awesome!!!
43
I think Smugglivus, despite being hard to spell, is quickly becoming my favorite time of year!
Sisters Red looks interesting, but I’m a sucker for a pretty cover!
44
I love fairies, so I must say 13 Treasures sounds great.
THanks
45
Definitely looking forward to Guardian of the Dead!
46
Wow, great giveaway. Sisters Red sounds really interesting. Great cover and kick-ass heroines? I’m in.
47
I have been longing for a look at Guardian of the Dead for many, many, many, many months, and would be much obliged for a copy! (Although I assure you I will probably also buy two or three.)
48
I’m very much looking forward to Guardian of the Dead – it sounds so interesting, and I follow the author on LJ. Her attention to cultural details is admirable.
49
I am intrigued with Sisters Red. I love rendition of old faerytales. Would love to win a copy.
50
These all sound amazing.
51
Sisters Red sounds awesome!
52
I’m looking forward to reading Guardian of the Dead! Karen Healey’s blog is great, and I love her posts about the thought she put into using, but not appropriating, Maori culture in the world building for Guardian.
53
I’ve been reading Karen Healey’s livejournal for a couple months now, and since her everyday ordinary writing is so excellent, I really look forward to Guardian of the Dead.
54
Guardian of the Dead, most def.
55
I’m looking forward to Guardian of the Dead, but that might be from Karen’s LJ, yes.
The other books sound interesting too, so getting all of them would be pretty sweet.

56
Well, all of them sound amazing, but I am most enthralled with the cover and premise of Sisters Red.
Thank you and Happy Smugglivus to you and yours!
57
Fairy tales have held sway over my imagination and ethics formulation since I was a wee thing–the main idea that helped me grow into a strong young woman is how in the old fairy tales, you can’t get your happy ending until you help yourself. I never understood where Disney got that prince rescuing the helpless princess stuff!
I’d love to read “Sisters Red,” it sounds right up my alley. After I read a decently re-written fairy tale, I pass the book on to a group of girls who like reading the same things–we tend to addict each other to the same series so there’s company when we’re giddy about a book or author
58
Wonderful lineup! Thanks for the insider scoop. I am really looking forward to reading “Sisters Red” – I love fairy tale retellings and with the added bonus that the sisters are fighters, well, it just sounds like a whole bunch of fun!
Thanks!
59
I’m incredibly excited about Sisters Red!
60
I have to say that Sisters Red sounds pretty awesome. I love all the rethinking and retelling of fairy tales that are going on recently. So cool!
61
Sisters Red.
62
I’m dying to get my hands on Ash-any retelling of the Cinderella story is always a treat. Interesting that Little, Brown Books has become a major player in the YA field; they did take a chance on Twilight. It is an interesting story on SM’s web site on exactly how Twilight was signed.
I wonder who designs the covers for them or where the ideas come from? If you look at the books, all the covers are really amazing.
63
Sisters Red sounds really good. The cover is really cool!
64
I am really looking forward to reading Guardian of the Dead when it comes out.
65
I would like to read Sisters Red
66
13 Treasures sounds interesting, plus the cover is gorgeous!
67
Probably Guardian of the Dead, because I LOVE Healey’s “Girls Read Comics” blog, it’s absolutely hilarious and cutting, often in the same sentence.
68
Thanks for the wonderful preview! SISTERS RED looks awesome.
69

73
They all sound good, but I am really looking forward to 13 treasures.
74
WOW! I LOVE adding to my “must seek out list”….of the three new titles shown, two catch my eye. If I have to narrow it down it one, I’d say, Sisters Red. Beyond the whole other take on the classic fairytale, the cover is great and fits so well!
75
This is a such great selection. I really want to read Guardian of the Dead and Sisters Red. GOTD just looks and sounds so creppy, and I love all things creepy. Sister Red – well, I really love fairy tales. Retellings are always a lot of fun.
76
Sisters Red sounds amazing, I am totally putting that on my tbr list. And the cover for 13 Treasures is beautiful!
77

78
Thanks for this lovely giveaway. Sisters Red looks amazing and 13 treasures.
79
I’m looking forward to Sisters Red. I just started Jackson’s first book and really like it so far.
80
I’m probably most eager to read Sisters Red–I got really interested in versions of Red Riding Hood recently and had to read a whole bunch of theory for something I was writing.
And if I let myself think about the others too much, I won’t be able to decide. So it’s Sisters Red.
81
Guardians of the Dead, for Karen Healy is both lovely & fantastic!
82
I really want to read Sisters Red. I am very excited for that one because I like fairy tales I know that authors give there own twist.

Oddly enough, I was browsing Karen Healey’s livejournal unbecknowst to me that she was the author of “Guardian of the Dead” until… well, until I thought about it for a second and realized, “I REALLY WANT TO READ THAT BOOK!”
