Some Kind of Happiness by Claire Legrand: Cover Reveal & Giveaway

Today we are thrilled to host the brand new cover reveal for Claire Legrand’s newest book, Some Kind of Happiness.

We have been huge fans of Claire Legrand’s work ever since we first laid eyes on The Cavendish Home for Boys and Girls, so we were delighted when we were given the chance to reveal this brand new middle grade novel. Without further ado, behold! The beautiful cover!

Some Kind of Happiness

A Word from the Author

Hi Smugglers, readers, and friends!

First of all, thanks to Thea and Ana for hosting this cover reveal! Although all the books I’ve written carry pieces of me inside them, Some Kind of Happiness is the most personal and the closest to my heart.

Like Finley, I too suffer from anxiety and depression. And, like Finley, when I first started experiencing panic attacks and bouts of depression, I didn’t know what they were. I wrote stories and made up imaginary kingdoms and spent my childhood with my cousins, exploring the tree-filled land behind my grandparents’ house. During those long summer days, we were inseparable, and we made those woods a world of our own.

As I wrote about Finley and her own tightly-knit crew, I wanted to recreate that sense of mystery and magic that only comes when you’ve spent the day having adventures with the people you love most in the world. I wanted to write a love letter to my big, messy, wild, huge-hearted family. I wanted to write a book for the kids out there who can read Finley’s story and realize they’re not alone in feeling sad “for no reason.”

Thanks to the fantastic Simon & Schuster art director Krista Vossen and the wildly talented illustrator Júlia Sardà, the gorgeous cover for Some Kind of Happiness perfectly captures the feel of this pivotal summer in Finley’s life—whimsical with a touch of darkness, beautiful and a little bit unsettling, and ultimately full of hope. This is a story about family and forgiveness, secrets and lies, and finding the courage to ask for help even after a lifetime of convincing yourself you can face your inner darkness on your own.

I hope you love this cover as much as I do! I can’t wait for you to meet Finley and discover the magic of the Everwood for yourself.

Some Kind of Happiness releases May 17, 2016. Until then, you can add the book on Goodreads and follow my Some Kind of Happiness board on Pinterest!

About the Book

THINGS FINLEY HART DOESN’T WANT TO TALK ABOUT

  • Her parents, who are having problems. (But they pretend like they’re not.)
  • Being sent to her grandparents’ house for the summer.
  • Never having met said grandparents.
  • Her blue days—when life feels overwhelming, and it’s hard to keep her head up.
    (This happens a lot.)

Finley’s only retreat is the Everwood, a forest kingdom that exists in the pages of her notebook. Until she discovers the endless woods behind her grandparents’ house and realizes the Everwood is real–and holds more mysteries than she’d ever imagined, including a family of pirates that she isn’t allowed to talk to, trees covered in ash, and a strange old wizard living in a house made of bones.

With the help of her cousins, Finley sets out on a mission to save the dying Everwood and uncover its secrets. But as the mysteries pile up and the frightening sadness inside her grows, Finley realizes that if she wants to save the Everwood, she’ll first have to save herself.

Reality and fantasy collide in this powerful, heartfelt novel about family, depression, and the power of imagination, for fans of Counting by 7s and Bridge to Terabithia.

About the Author

Claire Legrand

Claire Legrand is the author of books for children and teens, including The Cavendish Home for Boys and Girls, The Year of Shadows, the upcoming Winterspell, and its prequel, Summerfall. She is also one of the four authors of The Cabinet of Curiosities.

When not writing books, she can be found obsessing over DVD commentaries, going on long walks (or trying to go on long runs), and speaking with a poor English accent to random passersby. She thinks musicians and librarians are the loveliest of folks (having been each of those herself) and, while she loves living in central New Jersey, she dearly misses her big, brash, beautiful home state of Texas.

Courtesy of the author, we have an ARC up for grabs! (NOTE–ARCs aren’t quite ready yet but they will be sent out as soon as they arrive in mid-December.) The giveaway is open to all internationally! To enter, please use the form below. Good luck!

Not too sure about the upper part with the house and grass (it does like a bit bleak?) but the rest of Some Kind of Happiness’ cover art is absolutely gorgeous! The Everwood and the overall story really sound fascinating and right up my alley – the release next year can’t come soon enough! Thank you so much for this reveal and bringing this to my attention. 🙂

YES! OMG I’M SO HAPPY RIGHT NOW!

That cover is GORGEOUS and I lo-o-o-o-ove everything Claire writes. I think it’s SO important to have a book about anxiety and depression so kids (heck, adults as well) can see that they’re not alone.

A cover reveal can’t be more perfect than a Claire Legrand + BookSmugglers cover reveal. Love you all <3

I think this book was written for child-me. The girl who hid from her friends on her birthday and who was so tight with anxiety she couldn’t stand to play hide-and-seek. The girl who invented vast worlds to live in and who spent hours and hours playing in the trees. Oh, how I wish I had this book back then, but I can’t wait to read while grown <3.

Beautiful! I love that the woods look both ominous and luminous – inviting, but in an unsettling sort of way. Can’t wait to read it, and introduce it our middle schoolers (who loved Cavendish Home)!

What do I think of the cover, let me count the ways:

I think it’s simple in it’s design, as in not burdened with intricacies, and for some reason I can’t put my finder on it made me think of Maurice Sendak.
Reading Claire’s explanations about the story, I think it fits to a t.

This cover is BEAUTIFUL! I love how the bright crown contrasts with the darker colors everywhere else. So many of my students battle anxiety – partly because they feel everything SO INTENSELY. I can’t wait to read this book and add it to my arsenal. My students love your other books!

I like the cover. At first glance it looked almost spooky, with the colors and sharp lines, bt then I realized that was a crown and lights in the middle of the forest so maybe you have to get through a little tough stuff to get to the bright stuff. Interesting.

The cover is simply stunning. I need this book! I recently read Finding Audrey by Sophie Kinsella and it dealt with anxiety and depression as well. I really enjoyed that book and I hope to read this one and love it just as much. I don’t often read middle grade but I have had a lot of luck with middle grade recently. I did a middle grades recommendation video on my YouTube channel recently.
Finally I also suffer from anxiety and always find it difficult explaining to someone who does not suffer from anxiety what it feels like. Thanks so much for hosting this giveaway.

The cover art is fascinating with its contrasting top & bottom halves and central figure poised between the two. The sparse upper half of house & people looks less than welcoming, but the verdant woodland could be full mystery, or at least lessons to learn. Makes me want to delve right in!

I am so curious about this one – it doesn’t look like the usual creepiness, but there is the woods, and we all know that nothing GOOD comes from the woods.

The crown is so adorable, and I love the illustration! I’m so excited that I don’t know if I can handle it.

I don’t usually get swayed by book covers, but I love this one. And then this, this!, just makes me want to read the book right now: “recreate that sense of mystery and magic that only comes when you’ve spent the day having adventures with the people you love most in the world”.
