About the Book:

Jackaby

“Miss Rook, I am not an occultist,” Jackaby said. “I have a gift that allows me to see truth where others see the illusion–and there are many illusions. All the world’s a stage, as they say, and I seem to have the only seat in the house with a view behind the curtain.”

Newly arrived in New Fiddleham, New England, 1892, and in need of a job,Abigail Rook meets R. F. Jackaby, an investigator of the unexplained with a keen eye for the extraordinary–including the ability to see supernatural beings. Abigail has a gift for noticing ordinary but important details, which makes her perfect for the position of Jackaby’s assistant. On her first day, Abigail finds herself in the midst of a thrilling case: A serial killer is on the loose. The police are convinced it’s an ordinary villain, but Jackaby is certain it’s a nonhuman creature, whose existence the police–with the exception of a handsome young detective named Charlie Cane–deny.

Doctor Who meets Sherlock in a debut novel, the first in a series, brimming with cheeky humor and a dose of the macabre.

Giveaway details:

We have two signed copies of Jackaby up for grabs, courtesy of the publisher! The giveaway is open to addresses in the US and Canada only, and will run until Sunday November 9 at 12:01pm EST. To enter, use the form below!

Ummm…I don’t think any of the horror novels I read is considered YA. Does The Girl With All the Gifts count? 🙂 Thanks for the giveaway! I really want to read Jackaby, the premise sounds awesome!

I thought the Rot & Ruin series by Jonathan Maberry was very good. And I think Jeff Hart’s “Eat, Brains, Love” is a clever and fun twist on the zombie story. I am getting ready to start book 2 “Undead with Benefits”.

I’m not sure it counts as straight-up horror, but I really loved Warm Bodies and The New Hunger.

Ilsa J. Bick’s Ashes trilogy is absolutely terrifying and bleak, and I love it oh so much.

I really love The Hallowed Ones. (though the comments mentioned Through the Woods, which is a really close second)

I don’t go for really horrific books, but my favorite Halloween book is Fire and Hemlock by Diana Wynne Jones (currently featured on my blog as part of the “Witch Week” celebration).

I’ll have to go with The Forest of Hands and Teeth, that one was a hell of a book.

Shirley Jackson. It’s YA for the fifties, right?

Remember Me by Christopher Pike, I read it when I was younger and it scared me so much. For a newer one, I’d say The Screaming Staircase by Jonathan Stroud, his Lockwood & Co. series is brilliant and creepy.

I agree with a lot of the above comments, especially Fire and Hemlock, This is Not a Test, and The Coldest Girl in Coldtown… it is too hard to pick a favorite, since they are all great reads

It might not be classified as a YA ‘horror’, but Libba Bray’s ‘The Diviners’ definitely gave me chills!

The Haunting of Alaizabel Cray. Hands down.

Perhaps not so horrific, but Gaiman’s “The Graveyard Book” was great fun to read.

I Hunt Killers by Barry Lyga is my absolute favorite horror book (I know it’s kind of more of a thriller, but it’s still scary!). I also really love the whole Rot & Ruin series by Jonathan Maberry! THAT is a must read for zombie enthusiasts!

    Thanks for the giveaway!

I’m not a huge fan of out-and-out horror, although I like dark fantasy and suspense. I adored the brand-new HEAP HOUSE, though it’s more “creepy” than “horrific”.

I really loved Monster’s Proof by Richard Lewis – it focuses on an evil creature born from mathematics. I never thought to connect horror and math, but the book was a ton of fun.
