There are Pakeha authors who have written carefully about M?ori culture and mythology, this….really does not sound in even remotely the same ballpark.

There is long and creepy history of using the existence of the Moriori in really negative and racist ways…combine that with a lack of understanding of why cultural tattoos are not interchangeable and you have a recipe for a mess of a book.

I really appreciate negative reviews like this. Beyond being entertaining, in the too-crowded world of YA fantasy it’s a real service to be able to ignore lesser efforts, and the kind of racism and misogyny this book seems to be built on deserves to be called out.
