Over at Kirkus: A Natural History of Dragons by Marie Brennan

It’s Friday, which means we are over at Kirkus! Today Thea reviews historical fantasy novel A Natural History of Dragons by Marie Brennan.

A Natural History of Dragons

A highly entertaining read along the lines of Amelia Peabody – with dragons – A Natural History is the fictional memoir of Lady Isabella Trent. Overall, Thea enjoyed it… but has some significant reservations. Go forth HERE to check it out.

If you want to read about Victorian dragons, Tooth and Claw by Jo Walton is great! It’s essentially a re-imagining of a Anthony Trollope book (originally published in 1860), with dragons instead of people. However, it definitely isn’t just a straight insertion- the culture and physiological needs of dragons warp certain Victorian traditions. For example, when someone in a family dies, inheritance is incredibly important because dragons need to eat each other in order to grow. Therefore, dragons who get a larger share of the family member actually become much stronger and bigger. I loved this book. It also won the World Fantasy Award in 2004. Check it out for a different take on dragons (and hats! and gold!)!
