The results for our first Old School Wednesdays Readalong are in! 213 (wow!) of you voted and the book we will be reading is:

Terrier (Beka Cooper #1) by Tamora Pierce

Terrier

Tamora Pierce begins a new Tortall trilogy introducing Beka Cooper, an amazing young woman who lived 200 years before Pierce’s popular Alanna character. For the first time, Pierce employs first-person narration in a novel, bringing readers even closer to a character that they will love for her unusual talents and tough personality.

Beka Cooper is a rookie with the law-enforcing Provost’s Guard, and she’s been assigned to the Lower City. It’s a tough beat that’s about to get tougher, as Beka’s limited ability to communicate with the dead clues her in to an underworld conspiracy. Someone close to Beka is using dark magic to profit from the Lower City’s criminal enterprises–and the result is a crime wave the likes of which the Provost’s Guard has never seen before.

April Readalong:

The readalong will happen on April 24, when we will post our joint review of the book and open the floor for discussion and linkage to your posts/reviews.

The book seems to be readily available through the major retailers (Amazon, Book Depository, Barnes and Noble – both in print and electronic formats) if you wish to/can purchase it or hopefully – fingers crossed – you can also borrow it from your libraries. Please let us know if you want to take part on the readalong but are having difficulties finding a copy and we will try our best to offer alternatives.

Hope you will join us then!

This is definitely the best in the trilogy, and not a bad place to start if you’ve never read Pierce before – since it’s earliest in the timeline of the Tortall stories. The third book is even more gripping, but for my taste there was a twist at the end that character development for that character had made utterly unlikely and therefore, since the plot of the third book hinged on that, made me sour on that book.

24th of April, I may actually manage a reread during the hols ^^.

@Estara – my friend had the same reaction to the third book as you did but for me it worked, it felt believable. It is likely I’m just too gullible!

@April – usually I am, too ^^. But I thought that twist went against everything we had seen from that character before, and since there had been no subtle foreshadowing it just felt ooc to me.

However, that doesn’t take away from Terrier ^^.

I love love LOVE that this is a Tamora Pierce book, but it saddens me that it’s my least favorite of all of Tamora Pierce’s books. Oh well–I hope you all have fun!

Well, this one isn’t my favorite of her series but it isn’t my least favorite. My least favorite is The Immortals quartet. This one is my second least favorite. Not to say it isn’t good because it’s still Tamora Pierce.

I did not like the second book at all. That is what brought the trilogy down for me. There was just way too much obsession about breasts. It became distracting.

Estara and April – I know that a lot of people felt that the reveal in the 3rd book was out of character. However, while it was a surprise, I thought that there was enough of a breadcrumb trail leading up to it to make it believable.

For those that like audiobooks, there is an audiobook (CD and download) available. The narrator for the US is Susan Denaker who does a decent job.

I’m looking forward to re-reading the book, seeing what new things I pick out, and discussing the book with everyone here.
