Get Ready for Prodigy by Marie Lu (Giveaway)

To gear up for the January 29 release of Prodigy by Marie Lu, the second book in her Legend trilogy, we have one copy of the book up for grabs! Thea enjoyed Legend (a solid popcorn dystopia action flick of a book), so what better way to kick off this dreary, snowy, stormy Thursday than with a good dose of adrenaline?

The Books:

Book 2: Prodigy

Prodigy is the long-awaited sequel to Legend, the must-read dystopian novel for all YA fans of The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins and Divergent by Veronica Roth. A brilliant re-imagining of Les Miserables, the series is set to be a global film sensation as CBS films have acquired rights to the trilogy.

June and Day arrive in Vegas just as the unthinkable happens: the Elector Primo dies, and his son Anden takes his place. With the Republic edging closer to chaos, the two join a group of Patriot rebels eager to help Day rescue his brother and offer passage to the Colonies. They have only one request—-June and Day must assassinate the new Elector.

It’s their chance to change the nation, to give voice to a people silenced for too long.

But as June realizes this Elector is nothing like his father, she’s haunted by the choice ahead. What if Anden is a new beginning? What if revolution must be more than loss and vengeance, anger and blood—what if the Patriots are wrong?

Book 1: Legend

What was once the western United States is now home to the Republic, a nation perpetually at war with its neighbors. Born into an elite family, fifteen-year-old June is a prodigy being groomed for success in the Republic’s highest military circles. Born into the slums, fifteen-year-old Day is the country’s most wanted criminal. But his motives may not be as malicious as they seem.

June and Day have no reason to cross paths – until the day June’s brother, Metias, is murdered and Day becomes the prime suspect. Caught in the ultimate game of cat and mouse, the two uncover the truth of what has really brought them together, and the sinister lengths their country will go to keep its secrets.

The Excerpt:

JAN. 4. 1932 HOURS.
OCEAN STANDARD TIME.
THIRTY-FIVE DAYS AFTER METIAS’S DEATH.

Day jolts awake beside me. His brow is covered with sweat, and his cheeks are wet with tears. He’s breathing heavily.

I lean over him and brush a wet strand of hair out of his face. The scrape on my shoulder has scabbed over already, but my movement makes it throb again. Day sits up, rubs a hand wearily across his eyes, and glances around our swaying railcar as if searching for something. He looks first at the stacks of crates in one dark corner, then at the burlap lining the floor and the little sack of food and water sitting between us. It takes him a minute to reorient himself, to remember that we’re hitching a ride on a train bound for Vegas. A few seconds pass before he releases his rigid posture and lets himself sag back against the wall.

I gently tap his hand. “Are you okay?” That’s become my constant question.

Day shrugs. “Yeah,” he mutters. “Nightmare.”

Nine days have passed since we broke out of Batalla Hall and escaped Los Angeles. Since then, Day has had nightmares every time he’s closed his eyes. When we first got away and were able to catch a few hours of rest in an abandoned train yard, Day bolted awake screaming. We were lucky no soldiers or street police heard him. After that, I developed the habit of stroking his hair right after he falls asleep, of kissing his cheeks and forehead and eyelids. He still wakes up gasping with tears, his eyes hunting frantically for all the things he’s lost. But at least he does this silently.

Nice giveway! I really enjoyed Legend. Love the tie to the Victor Hugo classic.
My ideal apocalyptic scenario would be metereological disasters and resilient people haveing to fend for themselves without electricity.

Meteorological – maybe we’d have time to prepare before the disaster happened. And that seems ways less scary than zombie apocalypse.

I think the meteorological disaster would be more overwhelming. After all, aliens & zombies can be fought, but the weather just keeps coming.

I’d say… waking up to find that most of the population has vanished. So many things would fall to pieces. It would be both eerie and liberating!

Id have to say meteorigical too. I dont think I would last long with zombies.

  • Rylie

Not that there’s really any ideal apocalyptic scenario, but I guess I’ll go with zombies.

    November 8, 2012 at 8:51 am

I have to go with zombies. I’m prepared for the zombie apocalypse, others, not so much.

My ideal situation is viral. With the new ones emerging, there is great potential. Also, it takes time to make and distribute a vaccine so a new virus would effective for a bit of time without reponse.

My ideal situation is viral. With the new ones emerging, there is great potential and viruses are interesting.

I’m gonna go with post apocalyptic world due to nuclear attack. So basically, the Fallout games.

Zombies…I’ve read enough to know how to get rid of the little beasties.

I think a mix of disasters all interlinked make the best end of the world scenario, like a massive tsunami caused by an alien ship that has been lurking under the ocean then releases a tailored virus to destroy a section of the population, but that takes a lot of skill as a writer to pull that off 🙂

I love zombies because in the hands of someone like Max Brooks you really feel for the survivors and the choices that they have to make. Plus it’s fun to see all the ways people end up taking out the walking dead!

    Zombies!

    November 8, 2012 at 12:03 pm

DEFINITELY meteorological disaster. I loved the movie The Day After Tomorrow and I feel like that would an intense thing to go through. Zombies sounds a little too nasty.

  • Jennifer

    Meteorological disaster definitely!

I’d go with zombies. At least you have a chance to fight them off, whereas weather related disasters just come and you’re either lucky, or you’re not.

I’d prefer aliens over any of them!

  • Kelley B

I guess aliens. I love The Walking Dead, but I don’t think I would have made it very far in that zombie apocalypse.

Uhm… mass tidal waves? Great balls of fire? I don’t think aliens, zombies, or meteorological disasters would happen but would mass tidal waves or balls of fire happen? Who knows. Thanks for the interesting question and giveaway!!! 😀

I don’t quite think I have an “ideal” post-apocalyptic scenario, but I did love Children of Men, so maybe that? The world slowly dying out?

I’m going to go with Zombies. Easy to run from.

The ideal apocalyptic scenario is one that doesn’t happen.

The one that I’d most like to be in is an alien invasion- at least you can fight them. Zombies wig me out because I’m terrified of epidemics, and that’s basically all that a zombie takeover is. As for the apocalyptic scenario that would be most interesting- I’ve always wondered if we’d still be here when the sun went out, and who we would be by then.

  • Erin K.
    November 8, 2012 at 8:38 pm

I’d probably go with zombies. At least you can fight them, the weather not so much.

I think a natural disaster is more likely.

  • Amy Greenblatt
    November 8, 2012 at 9:44 pm

Hmm, I think my ideal apocalyptic scenario would be killer bunnies from outer space. Either that or a horde of Audrey II’s from Little Shop of Horrors taking over the world

  • Barbara Elness
    November 8, 2012 at 10:05 pm

I like the ecological disaster, with the ruined landscape and foraging for useful items in abandoned buildings, etc., with some type of mutants or zombies to fight. 😀

  • Tessa
    November 8, 2012 at 10:51 pm

hmmm zombies. i feel like its the easier one to survive since aliens would just blow us up and meteorological disaster…that could be anything 😯

  • MarieC
    November 9, 2012 at 6:18 am

Definitely zombies. I’d hope that we still have our technology to kill them off…

  • Susan

Zombies, though I’d have no hope of survival.

  • Alwyn
    November 9, 2012 at 7:20 am

Could not be more excited for this! Got Legend for Christmas last year and finished it in the wee hours of Boxing day morning.

I think I could probably communicate easiest with the Aliens so I’m going with that.

  • Lisa
    November 9, 2012 at 2:16 pm

Electromagnetic pulse shutting down all technology leading to the collapse of civilization. That’s why I’m keeping my paper books. The e-reader dependent folks will not survive. Heh heh heh.

I’d have to go with ailens… Not sure why but there’s gotta be something else out there besides us!

  • SueCCCP
    November 9, 2012 at 4:38 pm

Looking at how the climate is changing I predict that meteorological change is the most likely, plus I doubt that aliens would bother doing anything other than simply wiping us out with a clever virus. This book has been on my TBR list for ages, so thanks for the chance to win a copy.

    November 9, 2012 at 5:20 pm

I LOVED Legend by Marie Lu and cannot wait to be enthralled by the sequal. And we get to see DAY again!!! EEPP!! Thank you very much for this giveaway!

  • Saira J
    November 9, 2012 at 5:23 pm

My ideal apocalyptic scenario would be nuclear war in which the radiation causes some humans to mutate and develop super-powers. They try to accept themselves in a world where humanity itself is nearly lost.

  • Stephanie Osborn
    November 9, 2012 at 5:34 pm

I definitely have to go with a meteorological disaster. The possibility of survivors rebuilding (without aliens or zombies constantly attacking) sounds good to me.

  • LiLi
    November 9, 2012 at 5:49 pm

Since you mentioned aliens, all I can think about is The Day the Earth Stood Still. That is definitely an interesting scenario.

  • Maureen
    November 10, 2012 at 4:41 am

I would pick meteorological since I think most people would have a good chance of surviving

I keep thinking giant earthquake. Then tsunami. *shivers*

  • JennyC

Aliens are my end-of-world choice. There is just something epic about defeating a whole other race, that had technology advanced enough to get them to our planet.

Can’t wait for Prodigy! Marie Lu is brilliant.

  • Jasmine Rose
    November 12, 2012 at 12:02 am

Love me some zombie books, but I definitely wouldn’t want that to happen 😛
I suppose some kind of environmental disaster so there wouldn’t be any evil aliens or people/undead to deal with.

  • Jenn Baker (@jbakernyc)
    November 12, 2012 at 3:37 pm

I think the earth, or nature, undoing itself. It’s how things ended for the dinosaurs so it’d make sense for us humans as well. Not that I’d want the world to end or anything, but I could understand and perhaps a balance could be restored.

  • Jenna K.
    November 12, 2012 at 7:10 pm

I’d definitely say zombies. But the zombies wouldn’t be some mistake; they would be horrible things that we created. No natural disasters for me. Humanity will undo itself. 🙂

  • Jill of The O.W.L.
    November 12, 2012 at 8:20 pm

I do NOT want zombies I know that much!!! I guess what ever would end it the fastest. I’m not one for prolong suffering!

  • Megan B
    November 13, 2012 at 8:43 am

I think I’d go for aliens, because then there might be a chance for some sort of escape from the ending world to a knew planet somewhere.

  • Emma
    November 13, 2012 at 11:11 am

I think I’d pick aliens. Or robots. No zombies! They freak me out.

According to my teens, the end of the world will include zombies.

  • Jacqueline C.
    November 16, 2012 at 4:22 pm

I’d have to go with meteorological disaster. I feel like I would be less frightened and more likely to survive in that situation, as opposed to the disease/zombies scenario.

  • Kat @ No Page Left Behind
    November 16, 2012 at 4:34 pm

I like the idea of aliens bringing about the apocalypse…then at least we’d know that sentient life exists beyond our lil’ planet 🙂

  • Jenn
    November 17, 2012 at 4:10 pm

Ideally, it will be zombies. At least we will have a chance to fight back. Unlike aliens who would assumably be much more advanced.
