As you know, we are huge fans of Sarah Rees Brennan’s Demon’s Lexicon Trilogy and we are MOST excited about her upcoming novel Unspoken. As such, we are delighted to welcome Sarah to the blog today to reveal its cover. Without further ado, BEHOLD! The cover of Unspoken!
THE SMUGGLERIFIC COVER:
WE LOVE IT! And we can’t wait to get our hands on the book.
For now, we have a few extra bits.
THE SUMMARY:
Kami Glass loves someone she’s never met . . . a boy she’s talked to in her head ever since she was born. She wasn’t silent about her imaginary friend during her childhood, and is thus a bit of an outsider in her sleepy English town of Sorry-in-the-Vale. Still, Kami hasn’t suffered too much from not fitting in. She has a best friend, runs the school newspaper, and is only occasionally caught talking to herself. Her life is in order, just the way she likes it, despite the voice in her head.
But all that changes when the Lynburns return.
The Lynburn family has owned the spectacular and sinister manor that overlooks Sorry-in-the-Vale for centuries. The mysterious twin sisters who abandoned their ancestral home a generation ago are back, along with their teenage sons, Jared and Ash, one of whom is eerily familiar to Kami. Kami is not one to shy away from the unknown—in fact, she’s determined to find answers for all the questions Sorry-in-the- Vale is suddenly posing. Who is responsible for the bloody deeds in the depths of the woods? What is her own mother hiding? And now that her imaginary friend has become a real boy, does she still love him? Does she hate him? Can she trust him?
Sarah Rees Brennan brings Gothic romance kicking and screaming into the twenty-first century with a funny, modern heroine who can take care of herself, an angry, beautiful boy who needs to be saved, and the mysterious forces that bring them together and tear them apart.
A WORD FROM SARAH REES BRENNAN AND ARC GIVEAWAY:
Authors are always scared about their covers, but I was more scared of this one than most. A Gothic novel… what were Gothic novels meant to look like these days? How do you make a cover romantical and mysterious and classic-looking but not olden-days-looking? How do you have that kind of cover with an active-looking heroine? WAS IT IMPOSSIBLE? Was all hope LOST?
This cover came to me after my first cover artist disappeared into thin air (current theory: she murdered someone and went on the lam) and I was in a state of terror.
I was so happy when I saw the first sketch by my fabulous cover artist Beth White, I burst into tears in the airport. I feel so incredibly lucky to have got it. Are you feeling lucky? Comment for an ARC…
You heard the lady – comment below to be entered to win an ARC of Unspoken. Giveaway is open to ALL and will run till Saturday March 24 11:59PM (PST). Good luck!

March 14, 2012 at 1:19 amWhat a gorgeous cover. Is unlike anything I’ve seen in YA covers. It reminds me a little of the picture book The Princess Who Had No Kingdom- a book I adore for the artwork.
I LOVE how the male figure is just casually leaning against the spine- I’m hoping that means that he is going to be a miss understood bad boy 😉

March 14, 2012 at 1:20 amCool cover…. akin to the John Connoly ya covers…

March 14, 2012 at 1:37 amOooh, it’s gorgeous! It catches the eye and intrigues. (Even the girl’s hand on the door invites us to open the cover – was that deliberate?) If I weren’t already determined to read the book based on the excerpts that Ms. Brennan has published, this cover would inspire me to give it a try.

March 14, 2012 at 2:20 amOh, that is a lovely cover! I especially like that without context, the cutout style leaves ambiguity about which side of the gate she is on.

March 14, 2012 at 3:35 amOhhh it’s absolutely beautiful! I’ve been waiting so long to see it that it’s hard to believe it’s actually real! And I love it so, so much. I had a boxset collection of fairytales when I was little, with the most fabulous silhouetted paper cut illustrations and I loved it more than anything. It’s my favourite kind of artwork and I’m so, so happy that Unspoken has it too.
It may have taken a ridiculously long time to get, but that cover is so, so worth the wait. I’m not surprised Sarah is so happy with it!

March 14, 2012 at 4:48 amSarah I am commenting in the desperate hopes of an ARC.
Also as someone who had worked in a bookshop I think it’s a really good tone in terms of image. I think it will be very easy to sell!
Dyah Candra
March 14, 2012 at 4:49 amFabulous cover and a very intriguing summary. I like the colours used on the cover, the design is simple and elegant too. This is the first time I see something like “a boy she’s talked to in her head ever since she was born”.
Pleaseeeee Booksmugglers, give this humble reader of yours an ARC! Foreign books are hard to get in Indonesia (if they are not mainstream book like Twilight saga or Hunger Games), and they’re expensive 🙁
So please be merciful with me ><

March 14, 2012 at 7:59 amThis sounds really interesting! Love the cover too!

March 14, 2012 at 8:00 amFor some reason this cover was vibing The Secret Garden to me, or remakes of classic fairytales, similar to A Tale Dark and Grimm by Adam Gidwitz or Sisters Red by Jackson Pierce. Both of those books have awesome covers, and this one does too!
Allyson
March 14, 2012 at 8:12 amWhat a gorgeous cover!

March 14, 2012 at 8:12 amThis cover is beautiful, i cant wait to read this book.

March 14, 2012 at 8:13 amWhat a gorgeous cover! Her silhouette is very Nancy Drew.

March 14, 2012 at 8:20 amI love the cover and CANNOT wait to read about Kami and Ash; afterall, Alan, Nick, Mae, Jamie, and Sin were 5 of my all time favorite literary characters of the last few years.
Hannah
March 14, 2012 at 8:21 amIt really is a spiffy cover – worth the wait! I’ve never seen a silhouette with such attitude before.

March 14, 2012 at 8:24 amI love the idea of a twenty first century Gothic!
And now I’m wondering what’s up with the other teenage boy in the blurb (yeah, what you don’t tell is as intriguing, if not more, than what you do)
Please count me in!

March 14, 2012 at 8:29 amIt is pretty awesome that the cover was made from cut paper! Very crafty. I love it! Can’t wait to read this book, it sounds great. Thanks for the heads up!

March 14, 2012 at 8:32 amI can’t wait to see what Sarah Rees Brennan does with a Gothic mystery premise, looking forward to this book!
Jill
March 14, 2012 at 8:36 amA lovely cover, but then I am a big fan of paper cuts. Looking forward to this book.

March 14, 2012 at 8:37 amoh my god what do I have to do to get a copy of this ARC??? Are you taking bribes? Is the author taking bribes?? first borns??? (Not that I have one of those yet…)
Ashleigh
March 14, 2012 at 8:44 amI love the silhouettes and colors of the image. I’m sorry that kind of sordid story had to be connected to the book, but a beautiful cover resulted from it. Entering for the print ARC feels strange when I already have a digital galley through NetGalley, but so pretty! Could make a great gift for my best friend!
Christina
March 14, 2012 at 8:45 amAhh, that cover is so great! I’m really excited for Sarah, and very selfishly excited for me too to read it.

March 14, 2012 at 8:54 amI am beyond excited for this book – I loved the Demon’s Lexicon trilogy!

March 14, 2012 at 8:54 amVery cool. The cover is a nice departure from expected YA book covers. It has a nice sense of mystery.

March 14, 2012 at 8:55 am*so stupified by the SHEER UTTER GORGEOUSNESS of the cover that she is barely able to lift trembling hands to peck away at the keys and comment….*

March 14, 2012 at 8:59 amThis might just be the book I’m looking forward to the most in 2012. BRING ON THE GOTHIC ROMANCE. Also, it may be coming out on my birthday, but clearly I should therefore be in possession of it before then? Right? 😀
Heather
March 14, 2012 at 9:01 amSo incredibly cool! I love it. I’m so excited to read it. And the story behind the cover is interesting too! Can I sleep until September?
Sophie
March 14, 2012 at 9:03 amWow, beautiful cover! Thank you for the giveaway!
Justine
March 14, 2012 at 9:06 amThe cover immediately prompted me to search for Beth White’s work. Wow, she’s an amazing paper cutter! This cover reminds me of the covers for Jackson Pearce’s novels Sweetly and Sisters Red even though the strawberryluna design team uses screenprinting.
Sarah Rees Brennan is a funny, charismatic panelist if you ever get to see her speak in real life!
Iara
March 14, 2012 at 9:06 amGorgeous & imaginative cover!
Carrie
March 14, 2012 at 9:09 amOh my God, oh my God, ARC?!?!?!?! Definitely a beautiful cover, and after the stress of a missing artist I’m so happy that Sarah Rees Brennan is happy. Is it one entry per comment or per person? I’m assuming per person to avoid spamming, right?
Phil
March 14, 2012 at 9:14 amGreat cover, cant wait to read the book!

March 14, 2012 at 9:21 amThe cover looks amazing! Loving the mysterious yet vibrant feel to it.
I won’t lie, I’ve been crazy excited to read this book since the the very first snippets of the plot were released. Unspoken is easily my most anticipated book of the year. The wait for September looks long and perilous.

March 14, 2012 at 9:21 amI think its a fabulous cover! 8) It reminds me of the cover of The Book Of Lost Things (?) with the design.

March 14, 2012 at 10:14 amOh my gosh that’s beautiful! I can’t wait for it to come out so I can tell people I own nine of the four books she’s published. (Yes, that does mean I currently own eight out of three. Plus a few items of memorabilia. I am, unashamedly, a fan.)
Rachel
March 14, 2012 at 10:15 amThis cover is so striking — it balances bright-colored modern with old-fashioned cut paper and Gothic so well. I am so excited to read this book.

March 14, 2012 at 10:30 amWhat a gorgeous cover! I can’t wait to read this. I’m currently having the students in my English class read gothic novels, and I’m going to have to point them in the direction of “Unspoken” once they’ve worked through “Wuthering Heights” and “Jane Eyre”!

March 14, 2012 at 10:57 amI love, love, love this cover! From the tone of the blurb, it seems like the cover fits the tone too. Plus, it reminds me of the cover style for The Book of Lost Things, another book whose cover (and contents!) I loved!
I’m not feeling particularly lucky, but I hope my feelings are dead wrong in this case. I’d love an ARC! Thanks for the chance! 🙂

March 14, 2012 at 4:39 pmI’m a sucker for anything Sarah Rees Brennan, and this is no exception! The cover is very cool (particularly if you’ve read her blog post about the story behind it, linked above), too. Although (and I hope I don’t get automatically disqualified for saying this) I am kinda sad that it has “Brennan” on the spine instead of “Rees Brennan”, as I believe that’s what her last name technically is. Plus, I love multi-word last names. Still, I definitely understand that it’s not exactly common in the US (possibly elsewhere as well–not familiar enough with international publishing), so hey: The important thing is being able to find it in the bookstore, right? (:

March 14, 2012 at 4:47 pmGorgeous cover! It really does manage to do all those things you wanted in a cover. Congrats! I have it pre-ordered and can’t wait! I just hope the UK cover will be just as good.

March 14, 2012 at 5:22 pmThis is an absolutely GORGEOUS cover Sarah! I think I’m quite glad your first cover artist may have murdered someone and gone on the lam, because it has left us all with this beautiful cover! I own The Demon’s Lexicon books in the UK Paperback covers, but I’m thinking I will have to buy this series in this edition because it’s so super pretty! I can hardly wait for September!!!

March 14, 2012 at 5:24 pmOoo, that cover is indeed lovely! Sarah Rees Brennan is a great author and an awesome blogger, looking forwards to her next book!
Amy C
March 14, 2012 at 5:25 pmWow, that cover looks amazing! There’s something about the author’s name that bothers me. Er, the font, not Sarah’s name. Bad wording there. I feel like the font out to be all caps like the title, or the cover feels a little… off balance. Well, I’m sure the cover makers know what they’re doing. 🙂
Lea
March 14, 2012 at 5:43 pmI absolutely adored Sarah’s The Demon’s Noun series, and I can hardly wait until I finally get my hands on her new work! The summary sounds really interesting and simply fabulous, and the cover! Wow. Stunning! Perhaps not what you would expect from a Gothic novel, yet still surprisingly fitting. Love it!
So… yes, I would love an ARC! 🙂

They were great when Arthur Rackham and Joan Aiken had them in their books, and with The Evolution of Calpurnia Tate and The Aviary coming out with great covers by this same illustrator…well, I think a trend has started!
And the BOOK itself sounds great too! 🙂

March 15, 2012 at 11:43 amI kind of feel like spasming around like a lunatic looking at this. I had already decided to buy the hardcover of this instead of getting it for my kindle to save money, but now I don’t care if I have to skip eating to do it. I have to have this cover. I can’t think of a single cover I’ve ever seen that I liked more than this. I hope more than anything all three of them have the matching cover art.
Wishing you huge, enormous, millions of dollars success for this series! Even if I didn’t know about this book, I know for a fact I’d pick this one up to skim through the blurb. And the blurb…Well, let’s just say I’d buy it in a heartbeat.

March 19, 2012 at 4:59 pmOoh, in grade 8 we had to write our own “gothic romances”. We were given settings and character names, all of which were both bad and forgettable, except for the hero: Sir Wedgewood Ledbetter.
I am assuming this book will be better than the dreck all of us came up with. The cover certainly is.

March 21, 2012 at 7:24 amI think the cover has that Gothic vibe to it, and I like the branches cause they also remind me of vines – and gates and vines go well together in any Gothic setting. The type for the Title and author’s name is pretty cool as well. Overall I think the cover is very effected. As well Congrats Sarah! 🙂

March 22, 2012 at 11:35 amI’m looking forward to this story. I’m a big fan of your blog/stories… well your writing style overall. It’s lighthearted and entertaining and so very eye catching – which, this cover expresses so very well. The cover is especially reminiscent of the gothic-style genre which I absolutely adore, the shadow style for your cover couldn’t have been a better pick. I really am looking forward to when this book is published.
