Halloween Week Guest Post: A Halloween Movie Guide By Kendare Blake

Today’s guest is Kendare Blake, newbie writer, whose debut Anna Dressed in Blood has been positively reviewed all over the place (our own review is to be posted later today). As part of our Halloween celebrations, we have invited the author to talk about her fave Halloween movies.

Please give it up for Kendare Blake!

A Halloween Movie Guide

By Kendare Blake

Halloween. I love it so. How is it then, that this will mark the third year that I have been without a Halloween costume? I mean, okay, I have one. It’s the Karate Kid, and it’s sitting in my closet. But it was supposed to be a team costume, with my husband as Daniel-san and me as Mr. Miyagi.

There I am on the right. Why am I on this kid’s back? Cree-py.

My husband has to work on Halloween. So, while I could try to pull off the Daniel-san costume myself, I think I would end up being confused for Tochi from Revenge of the Nerds.

But maybe I should. Our first team costume was Indiana Jones and Short Round, and frankly, I’m running out of eccentric Asian sidekicks.

Anyway, since I’m going to be home, watching disturbing movies, I thought I’d do a list of some. Here we go. This list is in no particular order. I’m going to try to avoid listing obvious choices, like…HALLOWEEN. I’m also not going to list slasher flicks with lots of boobs. Too easy. And, I won’t mention JAWS, which, although great, has been viewed so often that it’s now just a really cool film about fishing.

Poltergeist II – Because of the old Native American. But mostly, because of the crazy scary preacher. He’s scary beyond all reason. Where did they find this guy?

He’ll be in your dreams later. Enjoy.

Insidious – It’s like Poltergeist, but only the second half. The first half is actually scary. And it features super hyper pissed Darth Maul.

I think he’s angry at Patrick Wilson for his Watchmen haircut.

The Mist – Is it called The Mist? Okay, I think it’s called ‘The Mist’. It’s based on the Stephen King story. Sure, it’s sort of a mash up of big weird monster thrills and chills, but the ending is flipping wunderbar.

Seventh Moon – Here’s where I go out on a limb and mention a movie I haven’t even seen. At least, I haven’t seen all of it. Amy Smart plays a newlywed on her honeymoon with her Chinese-American husband in China. And then weird Chinese demon stuff starts to happen. There’s a scene where they’re looking for some guy who left the car to go to take a wiz (horror movie no-no) and they come upon this boarded up house with dead pigs in the yard. All these voices start shouting at them in Chinese, saying the same thing but they don’t know what they’re saying. Stranger danger! I’m recommending this based on that scene alone. I’m sorry if the rest of it sucks.

Ew. What’s that thing?

Thanks to Book Smugglers for having me by on my favoritest of most favorite holidays. Now go dress up and have a great Halloween! Eat some candy. Watch some movies. READ SOME BOOKS! And of course, don’t forget the horror lover on your All Hallow’s Read giving list. Peace out and word to your mother.

Kendare Blake is an import from South Korea who was raised in the United States by caucasian parents. You know, that old chestnut. She received a Bachelor’s degree in Business from Ithaca College and a Master’s degree in Writing from Middlesex University in London. She brakes for animals, the largest of which was a deer, which sadly didn’t make it, and the smallest of which was a mouse, which did, but it took forever. Amongst her likes are Greek Mythology, rare red meat and veganism. She also enjoys girls who can think with the boys like Ayn Rand, and boys who scare the morality into people, like Bret Easton Ellis.
