One of my favourite animated steampunk-ish movies is Howl's Moving Castle based on the book by Diana Wynne Jones!

On another note, I will have to read some of your suggestions. I always pick up a couple of steampunk novels while browsing in my bookstore, but I never take them home. Thanks for the suggestions of great reads!

Nice article for those who have no idea of this genre full of unimaginable marvels :)

However, is it actually possible that someone brings up a list of steampunk games without mentioning Arcanum: of Steamworks and Magick Obscura (2001 I think)? It is THE steampunk PC game of all time ;) Not to mention an awesome RPG, too, except for a clunky interface.

As for what hasn't been yet said/recommended:
Bioshock is by no means steampnuk, it has been a few times discussed on several servers.
Continued in PC-Game fashion - steampunk games ARE also:
Rise of Nations: Rise of Legends
Thief series
Silverfall

As for movies, i would like to recommend Laputa: Castle in the Sky, which is sometimes almost a steampunk orgy :)
And League of extraordinary gentlemen movie is just as good as the comics.

Also, Girl Genius Online comic (already mentioned, I know) is AWESOME, despite the authors not wanting to label it steampnuk, I sure would :-)

Thanks so much for letting me participate, and it was FASCINATING to read everyone else's takes on the genre. It certainly gave me a hefty reading list addition, so again, THANK YOU.

Hi Ana and Thea. I had a basic understanding of steampunk before reading this post, but now, suffice it to say, I've learned a lot more. I appreciate the information on steampunk, the steampunk book recommendations, and Steampunk Appreciate Week in general. Look forward to the next SAW in April. Thanks!

What a great post!! So informative, and I love the references to books and movies. I'll definitely be directing everyone over here when they ask me "so... what's steampunk?"

One of my friends actually had me do a guest blog about steampunk a couple months ago. It pretty much encompasses what I think steampunk is, so I'll just link:

I think steampunk can reflect with amazing accuracy, the modern days.
Every invention we know, has a predecessor in the end of 19th century. Also, overpopulation problems, terrible working conditions and enormous differences between the "rich" and the "poor" were present.

Steampunk it's a fertile ground to explore this modern issues, in a sci/fi metaphore.

As I said on my blog, I think steampunk is a way to meld the present and the past (racism, sexism, whatnot), to question and reshape it, while retaining the zeitgeist and wonder of the Victorian era.
