This is one of the few novels I’ve read in the original German. I was really blown away. Enjoyed the movie too.

Mindy – I definitely recommend reading this book. It’s not very long and it’s impossible to put down !

Ana dearest, thanks for the dare. I think this was a success for both of us, eh? Who woulda thunk it!? I’ll still give the film a shot, just so I know. But I’m going in with lower expectations…

StephanieD – I completely agree! Mr. Suskind (and Mr. Woods) does a fantastic job of bringing all those scents to life. I’m a total stickler about reading books before seeing the movie, but even though I know the film cannot possibly live up to the book, I’ll still give it a rent. If nothing else, I like Alan Rickman, and it’s directed by the same guy who did Run Lola Run, which I loved!

I loved this book when I read it – so strange, but the prose was so lush and evocative – I could actually smell everything being described.

I’ve heard that the movie is not very well-done, I suppose it’s the equivalent of dancing about architecture.

This is certainly a better review than the one I posted a year ago, but I felt the same way about the book. I watched the movie and knew that I had to read this book at all costs.

I’ve been meaning to read this book for ages– I’ve seen bits and pieces of the movie, and it’s very atmospheric and dark, but in a twisted, magical realism kind of way.
