I'm reading this one now and I'm trying to wrap my mind around how Fire is NOT a Mary Sue. I remembered the book being rated pretty highly here - and it is a good book - but yeah, not understanding how she could not be a Mary Sue. Is it because the same qualities the make her seem so - he beauty, her ability to do anything she does superbly, etc., are also what makes her so hated to some? Does that cancel out her Mary-Sue-ness?

I'm missing something here possibly, and I'm not done with the book yet, but she actually does come off Mary Sue-like to me. Pondering...

Great review! I read Graceling, liked it, but so far this one seemed more interesting to me so I was looking for reviews. Will definitely read it asap. :-)

*nods* Yep. Everything you said. Everyone take note and pre-order FIRE right now! :) I've been forcibly restraining myself from re-reading it for awhile now. I can feel my defenses weakening though. It's THAT good a book.

How funny, I just reviewed Fire myself yesterday!
I completely agree with your points, especially that Cashore makes a great alternative to Twilight's altar, babies, etc! This book is a league above~

I remember the review for the first book and I swore I had bought it and put it on the TBR shelf at home but I must not have. Will definitely be getting it soon. Glad you enjoyed this one so much! It's great to see a sequel that raises the bar.
