You guys are right. If you havent read the last book, it was absolutely captivating. I didnt want to put it down at all. The Goose Girl is my favorite book of all time and i have yet to find another story that meets all my basic fantasy book needs. :D :P :!: :!: :!:

Thea, That's so funny that you found Goose Girl at Target, too! I also often by YA books there as their prices are usually better than traditional bookstores in my area.

I think you called it correctly. I would classify Princess Academy more as a middle grade read for ages 9-12.

Li, I recall reading Princess Academy in one night, so it was gripping enough to capture my attention, but I honestly don't remember a lot of details. What I do recall, is having been thrilled to read about a young girl being so empowered and important, which of course, is so great for middle grade girls. Or a girl of any age for that matter!

Mary - You got to meet Shannon Hale?! Oh, I'm jealous :) That's a shame you can't get books 2 and 3 in Scotland, perhaps you can order from amazon UK or book depository? I hope you get a chance to read the rest of the series!

Kathy - Thank you! The Goose Girl is just a lovely book. Hopefully Forest Born will live up to the rest of the series (as I'm sure it will).

Celia - Thanks!! I don't know what took me so long to read Shannon Hale's books. But hey, better late than never, right?

Belle - How is Austenland? It's an adult novel, right? I have to give that a read sometime soon! I hope you get a chance to read Goose Girl!

Christine - LOL, I got my copy of Goose Girl from Target as well! I often get YA books there - especially hardcovers. I haven't yet read Princess Academy, but I'll definitely have to give it a shot. I did like Book of a Thousand Days, but it's got nothing on Goose Girl (even though I did like the Mongolian type of setting - very different and cool). I can't wait to see what you think - and which book you prefer of GG and EB ;) And I agree - I love the older covers much more than the new ones.

Okie - I haven't yet read Austenland, but I'm excited to give it a shot. I hope you enjoy Goose Girl! It is a fun and surprisingly lovely read.

Li - I haven't read Princess Academy (which always strikes me as middle grade, but maybe it's just cover bias on my part  ), but I have read Book of a Thousand Days, and though it was good, it's nowhere near as good as Goose Girl. I think GG took me by surprise because I wasn't expecting it to be as good as it was...

In any case, I really do hope you give Isi a try  I think you'd like her.

Thanks Christine - taking into account the strong recs in this thread, I sort of feel that I need to give "The Goose Girl" a shot now :-)

I had to Google the difference bewteen the Newbery Medal and Award, and even the Award is a pretty big deal! Maybe I just wasn't in the right mood for "Princess Academy". It's been a while since I read it.

Correction: Princess Academy was a Newberry Honor recipient, not a Newberry Medal winner in 2006.

Li, Princess Academy is a stand alone novel and not connected to the Bayern books. I liked Princess Academy, but admit that I'm surprised it won the Newberry Award.
