I should also mention that Skinned is a dystopian, post-apocalyptic novel set in a version of the future where nuclear war has decimated the Middle East, and radiation and disease has claimed all of the major cities of the United States (and presumably the world). The atmosphere is destroyed as the world is covered by constant gray clouds and plunged into cold. A select few – those rich and influential enough – have escaped the cities and live out cushy lives in a futuristic version of suburbs; but the rest of the population scrounges in the ruins, mutated, hungry and without energy. This vision of the future is a bleak one, and especially effective since it’s told through the perspective of a rich kid who doesn’t know

By nitpicky I meant that you were thorough in your examination, which I don't know why I didn't write at the time. :)

And I know that if there is someone that could convert me to YA that would be you two guys. I am determined to read through your archives on YA month, since I missed it and all. Google Reader is on my side now, so I am a little bit more organized.

I haven't sent the story per se. I am writing it,but deadline starts officially to tick from September the 1st, so I have quite some time. I think I got a kick ass action story with a maddening aftertaste, but we will see.

Will thoroughly read this review anon but I'm in the middle of Skinned right now!

Surrogates looks great. Is it just me and my horribly biased reading, or is dystopian having a Renaissance right now?

Thanks for the review. Sounds like fun. I'd seen the trailer for Surrogates and am excited to see the film. Didn't know it was based on a book (hadn't looked into it). Might have to check it out.

Thanks again.

Danielle - I can definitely see why a lot of people might not like Skinned. It's more than a little grim, and the heroine is snotty and abrasive, which usually that means bad things, especially in a YA novel! That said...I still connected with this book, and enjoyed it. I'll definitely have to check out Beauty, thanks for the rec!

Harry - Even with its flaws, I think Skinned is a worthy read ;) Ms. Wasserman barely scratches the surface of Lia's story potential in this first book, and I'm hoping that the second will build on the better ideas in Skinned. (I am kinda nitpicky, huh? It's just if you're gonna tell an old story that has been told countless times before - i.e. machines becoming humans - you better tell it in a way that is awesome or have something different and new to contribute!)

You, no YA?! Oh, I think Ana and I can change that

And huzzah for submitting a story to The Beast Within antho!! Yes, Ana and I reviewed it last Halloween, and we both liked it! As with most anthologies, some stories were much better (and much worse) than others, but the good overwhelmed the bad! For instance, I saw the Surrogates trailer and immediately thought of Neuromancer, I, Robot, and "SQ 213" - so that's sayin' something!

Amie - There definitely is an Uglies series vibe to Skinned, I agree! But it is very different and its own too. I really did like the book and cannot wait for the sequel. And if you liked this, I *highly* recommend The Adoration of Jenna Fox and Feed. And well, you know, Battlestar Galactica, etc

I LOVED this book for all the reasons you named (her questioning her humanity and yes, the grittiness of it all)--kind of reminiscent of Westerfeld's Uglies series...but different. I haven't read the other titles you mentioned so I have nothing to compare it to.

This is interesting. I like how you nit-picked all the aspects and elements that make a genre title like this one. If I get in my hands someday I will definitely read it, but since YA hasn't really stuck with me as a genre I am inclined to not claw my eyes out in anticipation. HAH!

Anyway I am sending a story to this year's anthology The Beast within. Say, how did you like the first anthology?
