Thank you Thea! I think I might investigate the first book And sorry, off the top of my head I can’t think of any similar books apart from those you’ve already mentioned.

Pern! *SIGH* I too wanted a dragon after reading those books And seeing Archangel has made me want to reread that series!

KT – Thanks for the recommendation. I haven’t read Swainton before, I’ll definitely have to check those books out. To the amazon cart they go!

KMont – LOL. Yes, PERN! I loved these books too when I was younger. Consorts of Heaven is a good read, but not really up to Pern status yet It is the same type of genetics/fantasy/technology blend though, which is always entertaining, IMO!

I’m sorry, but that cover of The Chronicles of Pern is blocking out my ability to think about anything else ATM. I mean, that is PERN. It eclipses any thoughts I might have for Consorts of Heaven. Yes, I think I may have wished for a dragon while reading about Pern back in high school.

I will say, though, that the kind of society you described is probably my most favorite for science fiction. I can’t think of any similar titles ATM.

For more Sci-fantasy, try Steph Swainton’s The Year of Our War. (It also has sequels No Present Like Time, and The Modern World).

I’m not sure it’s my favourite, but I do enjoy the series a lot, it has some fantastic ideas and images and I do like the protagonist, a dangerously scandalous member of the immortal Circle, who is continually stretching his given immortality to the limits with his vices and running the risk of having it taken away.
