I know this comment is quite late, but I just found this post while googling something else... I really like books, probably not crazily like you guys, but I do love to lose myself in a good story. Loved your blog!

I just had to say to Ana, "O Menino Maliquinho" was my first favorite book and I lost the count on how many times I read it till this day. Other Ziraldo's books were also part of my childhood (like "Bichinho da Maçã") but I still keep "O Menino Maluquinho" on my shelf (next to "Le Petit Prince"...) and I have a little look at my childhood from time to time!

And to Thea, I totally agree on Dan Brown!! And don't even tell me about Meyer's Twilight saga!! Some money and precious hours of my life down the drain!

I'm coming out of lurk-mode for the first time to say that Scary Stories to Read in the Dark was so traumatizing to me as a child. I read that book and had nightmares for days. I don't remember the stories at all - it was the illustrations that terrified me. I actually forgot what the book was called until I saw it here. Those illustrations are still the height of scariness for me. But - to each her own!

You know, as soon as I finished writing this I thought of so many books I should have mentioned. Like, how did I ever forget Wuthering Heights? Or Nick Hornby's books?

I also noticed the total lack of romance novels in my replies! How disheartening but well, it's life right?

And The Shadow of the Wind is all kinds of awesome. I DO recommend everybody to read it.

Re Stephen King. I think the man writes good stories to a certain point. It seems that 3/4 into his books he loses steam and writes LAME endings. It is so frustrating.

I loved Mara, Daughter of the Nile as well, Thea as you know.

What thorough answers! I'm always so impressed with how very well read in all kinds of genres you both are!

And Thea, The Elegant Universe? Seriously? You are a geek! Which is totally cool by me. I married one myself.

I took a couple Russian literature classes in school and I grew to love Russian writers! So #10 is a no brainer for me. If you decide to read any you should definitely read some of Alexander Pushkin's short stories to start out.

But if you get the chance The Master and Margarita by Mikhail Bulgakov is superb! You have to also at least try Chekhov or even better (imo) Nikolai Gogol. Gosh, the list could go on and on, but seriously worth the time! :)

(Although I should say I'm not really a big fan of the heavyweights Tolstoy and Dostoevsky...)

Anyway, great meme, now I have some more books to add to the TBR pile. 8O
