I'm in the middle of this book right now (my first Kate Noble, but I can already tell you it won't be my last) and came to track down your review to see what your thoughts were. I completely agree with everything you said! Seeing the heroine be crafty/annoying at times and having the hero be just a regular guy is *so* refreshing, and I do not miss ridiculous the Tarzan-on-a-rope-over-the-top-sweaty-chested alpha male in the slightest.

I agree wholeheartedly with your praise of both of her books, I loved them also and am eagerly awaiting her next one. As for sex scenes, I often skim them too, frequently it's a little TMI for me...

Oh, ok, fine, I'll read it too. :D

Great review, Ana, seriously. I've been mostly meh about what I've been reading recently, romance-wise, and this sounds like a nice fix.

The sex scenes? It depends on the scene, though a lot of what I've read it seems like the sex is slotted in there since it's a genre convention, and I've become so adept over the years at spotting them two chapters off that I do sometimes roll my eyes and skim ahead. I finished reading a Gayle Callen recently that I enjoyed, and the sex scene was sort of uncomfortable in a good way...the characters were not at a good place in their relationship, and their first encounter really reflected that. I was surprised, actually, at the use of the sex at that point but it didn't feel forced (as a scene, not as sex) or awkward, just actually a sex scene that made me really ponder the motives of both the characters, and as for where it was in the plot it actually made sense.

I don't think I'm making sense. But my review of the book is posting tonight, if that'll help!

A '9'? OK, obviously I need to read this book...although my TBR list is now groaning under the weight! And I'll be interested to see how I react to the heroine - she sounds like an interesting one :)

Great review! You mentioned two things I can't get enough of in romance novels:
Beta Heroes
Heroine who is beautiful and popular but NOT villainous

*whines* why must so many heriones be flawed and average looking and only the hero can see her incandescent beauty /end whine

I know we don't want our Heroines to be Mary Sues, but I'm so happy to see that *just once* the herione can be gorgeous and popular and still likeable

Def adding this to my TBR

I never really been into Romance novels. Maybe because my mom had some and I remember reading the sex scenes as a kid and dying of embarrassment. Or maybe it was the corny book covers?
I hate when they just have sex throw in because they feel like they had to add it, when the story would have been fine without it. Its like the author was writing away and all the sudden they got horny.

I'll check this one out though. I like the characters already just by your description. I'm all for a different type of heroine!

What a great review! This definitely will go on my TBR list. I totally understand about liking romance but at the same time being tired by conventions that appear so frequently.

I especially want to read this because of your description that the characters aren't painted with extreme broad strokes, and that Marcus is really a Beta male. I love me some beta males. Too often we get romances where the hero has to be the Greatest and Most Promiscuous and Yet Absurdly Healthiest Lover of the Ton and the heroine has to be the Lily White Virgin Who Loves Babies and Animals and Is Only Mean to the Bitchy Bitch of the Ton Because She Totally Deserves It.

I, too, am also tired of sex scenes that just happen out of nowhere. One novel (that shall remain unnamed *cough*ToSinWithAStranger*cough*) had a sex scene that took place on TOP of a marble statue. Um, OW.

I'll definitely be looking for this one once my TBR pile shrinks a bit.
