I have this book waiting for me also at the library. Why do I think when I finish reading, I will be jumping at shadows?

Thank you Thea! Drood really is a door stopper at nearly 800 pages. Not sure if I can tackle it at present, but I will keep it in mind as it sounds very interesting.

We have TERROR paperback at home. My wife read and liked it. I don’t know when I will read it.

Thanks for the comments! Thea is on holidays but I am sure she will try to be online at some point to reply (not today though, as she is en route).

I really want to read this book. It would be my first Dan Simmons’ but I am a huge fan of Wilkie Collins (not so much of Charles Dickens – never finished any of his books I tried to read! *gasps*) and Woman in White and the Moonstone are two of my all time favorite books.

Great review, as always.

I loved this book (I think Simmons is just brilliant, too) and I thought his recreation of Dickens was wonderful. But yes, it was too long. And I really didn’t like Wilkie by the end – he does some bad, bad things… I found it funny that I started equating the fictional Wilkie with my opinion of the real one! I guess that’s the sign of a really good writer.

My other minor quibble with it was that except for that incredible opening accident scene, it wasn’t very scary. I had nightmares about The Terror for weeks, and that’s what I was comparing it to.

Drood is waiting for me at the library, and The Terror is sitting on my bookshelf waiting to be read. I haven’t ever read any of Simmons books but I love the fact that they are huge chunksters, even without even opening a page!

I also liked that it was more of a character study between these two literary greats. It did feel a bit overlong, but never enough for me to stop reading it. I’ll have to check out The Terror. Great review!

I think I have copies of Dan Simmons’ “Drood” and “The Terror” coming my way. I am looking forward to read them. I am familiar with his “Hyperion” books, but I have to read his other novels as well.
