I absolutely, 100 percent, agree with Doctorow's thesis, but am having a hard time getting past the fact that the author is so present in the book. I think I'd much rather this were nonfiction, instead of framed in a technothriller setting, because I could appreciate his thesis more, but I like my fiction to have fleshed-out characters who aren't right all the time.
