Countdown to Smugglivus – Linnea Sinclair
Day 19 (7 Days to Smugglivus and counting)
Who: Linnea Sinclair, pioneering author of Science Fiction Romance! Linnea has won both RITA and PEARL awards and racked up starred reviews for her novels, making her one of the most important, influential authors in this growing subgenre. Linnea also happens to be one heck of a cool person, and we have had the pleasure of interviewing here here!
Recent Work: The 2006 RITA Award Winning novel, Gabriel’s Ghost was the first Linnea Sinclair book we read here at The Book Smugglers–and we loved it. This year, Linnea released Shades of Dark, a direct sequel following Chaz and Sully–and again, we loved it. Linnea has her third book set in the Gabriel’s Ghost universe coming out early next year, titled Hope’s Folly. This third novel departs from Chaz and Sully and instead follows a secondary character from the first two books, Philip Guthrie. For her Smugglivus post, Linnea has kindly offered to introduce us to these new characters, with an introduction to Hope’s Folly telling us about the day Philip Guthrie walked into her office and….
Without further ado, we give you Linnea Sinclair!
__________
Linnea:
Dear Smugglers,
I was just finishing writing SHADES OF DARK when Admiral Philip Guthrie walked into my office. Limped, actually, but I’ll get to that. Now, people walk into my office all the time. Characters from my books, less so.
You might remember Philip as Captain Chaz Bergren’s domineering ex-husband in GABRIEL’S GHOST, who then became much more of a friend and worthy teammate in SHADES OF DARK. He was the tall, (prematurely) silver-haired guy with the incredible blue eyes but well, rather stodgy manner.
See, there’s a reason for that, as his youngest brother Devin recently told me: Guthrie men, when they love, love deeply. They’re just horribly inept at showing it.
Anyway, there I sat, getting Chaz and Sully’s story out, and I hear this very definite masculine throat-clearing behind me. I turn. It’s not my husband, Rob. It’s Philip.
I shooed Daq-Cat out of his usual place in the overstuffed chair. “Would you like to sit, Admiral?”
With a heavy sigh, he did so. “This is never a pretty maneuver,” he said, leaning on his cane.
Well, yes. He did get roughed up in SHADES OF DARK.
“I’m a little busy.” I motioned to my screen. “But if there’s something important—”
“There is. With all due respect, Ms. Sinclair, you took my wife away from me, destroyed the fleet I devoted my life to, and now I’m left with no job, no hope, no prospects. I’m forty-five. Not that that’s old, mind you. It’s just…,” and he hesitated, looking away. Then he turned back, a small fire in those magnificent blue eyes. “You damned near killed me in GABRIEL’S GHOST. But at least I had my career. My life meant something. I see no improvement coming at the end of SHADES OF DARK. Not for me. I think I’ve been a very good character for you. I deserve better.”
The passion in his voice struck me. Here was a man who cared deeply, who was loyal, courageous, and…okay, I’ve been happily married almost thirty years but I can still recognize when a guy is gorgeous. How did Chaz describe him in GABRIEL’S GHOST? “A figure and a face that turned heads regularly in bars on liberty. Classic, undeniably masculine.”
And I damned near killed the guy in GABRIEL’S GHOST and roughed him up badly in SHADES OF DARK.
I sighed. “You’re absolutely right, Philip—may I call you Philip?”
“I’d feel a lot better if you do.” He smiled softly.
My toes curled.
Oy.
“Okay, Philip. I agree. You definitely deserve better than what I’ve done to you.”
“All I want is a ship to command, a career again. Something to believe in. It doesn’t have to be one of those,” and he waved one hand at the line of my books on my bookshelf, “romance-type things.” He cleared his throat again, evidently slightly embarrassed by those “romance-type things.”
I was charmed.
“I just need something to give me hope,” he continued.
“Hope?” I drummed my fingers on the edge of my keyboard. “I can definitely do that.”
“And a ship? Some action? I’d like to do my part in cleaning up the problems in the Empire. It’s what I’m good at, you know.”
I did. “A ship, a good crew, worthy adversaries. How’s that?”
“Excellent.” He grinned broadly as he shoved himself to his feet, cane in one hand, the other outstretched toward me. “Thank you so much. I knew you’d come through for me, Ms. Sinclair.”
“Linnea,” I corrected as I let him enfold my hand in his larger one. Gentleperson’s agreement.
“Linnea.” My name was a deep rumble in his chest.
Oy.
“Sorry about the leg.”
He shrugged. “It’s healing. Getter better daily.”
Philip Guthrie left my office, going back to wherever characters go while their author is working. Daq-Cat returned to his corner of the chair. My fingers hit the keyboard.
Okay, Philip, here’s the deal:
You’re Philip Guthrie, an admiral from one of the wealthiest families in the galactic sector. You have position, prestige and respect greater than many men would have in their mid forties. But then everything changes when a power-mad politician named Darius Tage turns the empire you’ve devoted your life to upside down. The Fleet you knew is gone, captains you trusted are dead, there’s a kill-order out with your name on it, and your ex-wife is in love with a shape-shifting, telepathic half demon named Gabriel Sullivan.
Now you’re living on the rim, working with the rebels—the Alliance of Independent Republics—to guarantee the survival of those trying to flee a corrupt and dying empire. And trying to forget the error you made that brought some of your captains to their deaths—including the first commanding officer you ever served under, Captain Cory Bennton. Fighting with the Alliance is the only thing that has any meaning in your life anymore, the only thing you can do, except…fall in love. With Rya Bennton. She’s twenty-nine years old, and your former commanding officer’s daughter.
When she was ten, you nicknamed that annoying, impetuous brat “Rya the Rebel.” Now that nickname has become reality. Her father was one of the first casualties of the new regime, shot in cold blood by a death squad that enforces the rules. But Rya’s always made her own rules, and now she’s part of the rebel alliance, her sole focus to avenge her father’s death.
But you promised Captain Cory you’d protect his daughter. How can you do that when she keeps throwing herself in harm’s way—trying to save your life?
And how can you build a new fleet for the Alliance, when the flagship they give you is a recommissioned fruit-hauler that stinks of oranges…and is home to a stowaway cat?
It’s an impossible mission on a derelict ship called HOPE’S FOLLY. A man who feels he can’t love. A woman who believes she’s unlovable. And an enemy who will stop at nothing to crush them both.
Let the adventure begin! (And watch out for Devin Guthrie’s story—he’s Philip’s younger brother who has a lot to learn about love—coming soon!)
With hugs and whisker kisses,
~Linnea

About Us
We are two completely obsessed, sad, sick addicts when it comes to books. Faced with threats and cynicisms from our significant others and because of the massive amounts of time and money we spend at Amazon.com, we resorted to getting books delivered to our offices and then smuggling them into our homes (in huge handbags) to avoid detection. Here we found a perfect outlet for our obsession! Reviews, recommendations, and other ponderings are our specialty.Sponsors

10 One of the best books I have ever read9 Damn near perfection8 Excellent7 Very good6 Good, recommend with reservations5 Meh, take it or leave it4 Bad, but not without some merit3 Horrible, barely readable2 Complete waste of time1 One of the worst books I have ever read; I want my money (and a few hours of my life) back0 Did not finish

((PHILIP)) psst… don’t tell Sully how much I find you to be the cat’s meow also. ;P
I have a tie… Mal Reynolds and Inara… or Zoe and Wash… or Kaylee and Simon.
And yes, Leia and Han Solo are definitely up there, but… well, really. Firefly = uber win.
I’ve been reading Linnea’s books for years and I love them. They’re the perfect combination of action, romance, science fiction, great characters and relationships. The couple I like best are Kel-Paten and Sass from “Games of Command”. Kel-Paten has loved Sass for years and the emotion and angst he feels at never having that love reciprocated is tangible. And when Sass finally finds out Kel-Paten loves her…I guess you’re going to have to read the book
I’d have to go with Kel-Paten and Lady Sass, too. Except when I’m reading Finders Keepers. Then its Rhys and Trilby. And then when I’m reading her others, okay, I love all Linnea’s pairings.
From Linnea’s work, I’m for Sully and Chaz the whole way!
If I’m going for any SFR, I’d say…Han and Leia. Just because they are classic. But Adama/Roslin, Starbuck/Sam, Six/Baltar and Mal/Inara definitely give them a run for their money!
Oh, I am so in! Sinclair! Woot.
Thanks!
Ohhh I have to choose??? Gulp. Guess it would just have to be Lady Sass and Admiral Kel-Paten. But Sully and Chaz are right behind them.
Donna
Oh, wonderful! Linnea, I love when you visit places. You are just a really generous author. And poor Philip!! I can’t wait for his story.
I’m going to join the Chaz and Kel-Paten lovers. Or, maybe I’ll say Tank and Reilly!! But not THAT way.
My favorite pairing is the rocket and her pilot from Anne McGaffrey’s “The Ship who Sang”.
(playing for fun – no need to enter my name)
Kel-Paten and Sass for me, too, Sully and Chaz a close second.
Hmmm. Not sure if it's strictly sci fi, but one of my choices would be John & Emma Murdoch from 'Dark City'. My other pick is Jean-Luc Picard and… well, just about anyone. He is so cool.
In Linnea’s worlds I’d have to say Sass and Kel-Paten, their dissimilar natures make for such humorous interactions. In SF in general my vote goes to Firefly’s Mal and Inara, if only because they seem so awkardly in love with each other and seemingly star-crossed at the same time. Tugs at the heartstrings, ya know?
Oh my God my sister read that book and she loved it! the tote would be an amzing christmas present
My fiance now thinks I’m nuts since I just went “Oh my gosh, I could win a Dock 5 Universe coffee mug?!”
My favorite couple has to be Chaz and Sully. I recently devoured both Gabriel’s Ghost and Shades of Dark and couldn’t get enough of their story.
umm…gosh its hard! like so many others Firefly couples top my list, Ten/Rose (from Doctor Who), Captain Jack Harkness/Captain Jon Hart (Torchwood), Ezra Dax/Julian Bashir (Star Trek: DS9), and Riker/Troi (Star Trek TNG), though I admit I like Riker/Troi far better in the books then on the television.
Well…I’ve read HOPE’S FOLLY, too, and I really, really like Philip and Rya(okay, maybe I’m more partial to Philip!) This book is such a whirlwind of action, I would actually like another book with more of these 2 characters in situations where my heart isn’t racing and threatening cardiac arrest! Philip and Rya are great together and I felt like I was just getting to know them by the end of the book. The final scene especially had me curious about the next chapters of their lives- certainly never a dull moment with Rebel Rya!
Otherwise, I’m with the other readers who have said that their favorite Linnea Sinclair couple is the couple who is in the book they are presently reading or re-reading. I think I have a special place in my heart for Chaz and Sully, though.
I have two ebook readers – my old eBookwise and my newer Sony Reader. For the last 1-1/2 years, one of my coworkers has been enjoying my old eBookwise. I only see it when she’s passing on her way to lunch (or when she gives it back to me to load up some more books).
Well, yesterday she came back from lunch all excited about the book she’d started that day – Gabriel’s Ghost! She liked Chaz and Gabriel, she liked the action, she liked the world-building (although she didn’t use that term).
I told her that Chaz and Sully were my first introduction to Linnea Sinclair, and my favorite book until … maybe … Games of Command.
I know she’s going to want to read Shades of Dark, but I bought that one for my PDA, and I’m not sure I’m willing to let her borrow that.
I think I have Finders Keeper in a format for that reader, though, so she may be willing to start that next, until she can find her own copy of Shades!
Sips his ice tea wishing it was an iced gin.
I just finished painting the walls in my family room again. Everytime I read this book I have to repaint my walls since the paint peals off of them.
I think Philip and Rya are my most favorite pair of your characters so far…
Of course there’s always the next book
OOOOh, I’d have to say Sully and Chaz are my favorites of Linnea’s always sterling couples. Sully is just so yummy, and Chaz is so spunky that you can’t help but love them both.
I’ve read all of Linneas books and I adore them all. She has this marvelous ability to create characters that seem so real, you find yourself hoping you’ll run into them at the grocery store.
I can’t wait to read Phillip and Rya’s full story! I think that reading the teaser chapters has gotten my appetite more than whetted for their romance.
Oh man oh man!!!
Ok Han & Leia, Mal & Inara…Sully & Chaz….TOO MANY If I must pick- Sully & Chaz
I have to go with Zoe and Wash as tops. But I love all the couples in Robin Owens’ Heart series, if you count them as SF rather than fantasy.
Looking forward to Hope’s Folly. So far Sass and Kel-Paten are my favorite pair. Then Rhys and Trilby. This sounds like the other Jones who posted. Must be the last name.
