Hi, this is my first time visiting here. I connected through a Linnea Sinclair review on her website.

I adore the Amelia Peabody series -- you've got a lot to look forward to, as they just keep getting better and better. For the most enjoyment I recommend the audio version, read by Barbara Rosenblatt. You won't believe her incredible characterizations! My husband has gotten used to my random explosions of "Peabody!" in Emerson's gravelly voice. Both the author and the reader are phenomenal.

By the way, Loretta Chase has commented that she is also a fan of the Amelia books -- in fact, that's where I first heard of them. She said she was a little intimidated about writing Mr. Impossible because of how much she likes the Amelia series.

Thanks for your high standards! I'll look forward to more of your reviews.

I just adore these books, as I do pretty much everything else Elizabeth Peters has written. I second the recs for her Vicky Bliss books, which are hilarious and also have wonderful romance, and also her Barbara Michaels gothics and ghost stories. I think I've reread every single one at least a couple of times.

My favorite scenes with Emerson and Amelia are in the 2nd or 3rd book(or maybe it's even later in the series- can't remember) in which Emerson, bless his heart, gets his hands on a copy of the Kama Sutra. Makes me smile just thinking about it!

Elizabeth Peters also writes a series of books featuring Vicky Bliss, an American woman who works for a museum in Germany. These are entertaining books, too. They are also mysteries, but are written in present time. They, too, feature a very intelligent, strong-willed woman and "Sir John Smythe," a thief of international reknown. Their romance unfolds over several books and is very entertaining. The Amelia Peabody series has more or less wrapped up, and Ms. Peters published her first Vicky Bliss book in 10 years last August. She even makes a connection between Vicky and John's world and that of the Emerson's. I hope there will be more light-hearted Vicky Bliss books to come.

Amelia is a very lucky woman! I thought I had a crush on Emerson, but I am sufficiently far enough into the series to have a serious crush on Ramses now! It must be nearly time for me to read the next book in the series actually.

I don't know if you ladies use audiobooks, but if you do, I highly recommend getting hold of the audiobook version of one of these books narrated by Barbara Rosenplatt. (I think that's here name).

Her narration is so excellent, and she totally nails the personalities and voices of each of the individual main characters.

M.--I totally would have guessed that you loved these books too (judging from your awesome narrative style over at your blog!). I agree with you, definitely, about EP's approach to Egypt in the late 1800s. I love that Amelia is a staunch believer in British authority, BUT at the same time both she and Emerson see the ridiculousness in claiming superiority in race, etc. Oh and I *HIGHLY* recommend Mara (which is actually set in ancient Egypt during the reign of Nefertiti)--it's one of my top 5 books of all time. If that says anything ;p

Lana--*highfive* I've only just started with young Ramses (on book 4 now), but I love him instantly! My only regret is not discovering these books sooner! I suppose this is a blessing in disguise, since there are so many books to catch up with! And yes--totally pick up Mara. It's a perfect 10 :)

Hagelrat--DEFINITELY give this a try. I dare anyone to read this book without laughing aloud at least once, or without breaking into a huge smile!

Li--dude, you're so very right. Thank you again for the rec! This is definitely a growing obsession. Just writing this review (and comment!) I am holding myself back from diving headlong into the next Amelia adventure *thuds*

Lisa--Oh I'm so glad we were able to get you to try this series! I think you'll enjoy it--the focus on setting, plot and strong characters with that strong undercurrent of romance...hmm, why does this sound familiar? ;)

Jill--I think I'm in your boat, although I still shy away from romance-dominted literature. I read a lot of fantasy and SF, but I love the romance subplots and parallels!

I'm so loving these books, and can't wait to read more of Amelia and Emerson...and of course, Ramses :)

I am just tickled pink that you enjoyed the book so much. You are in luck because she has quite an extensive back list. She is also known as Barbara Michaels where she writes stories in a gothic style. They are very good too.

I started reading Ms. Peters books when I was in high school. I just devoured them.

Its funny to me Ana how you stated that you have started to read more books outside of romance because you want more from your books. I am sort of the opposite. I started with Ms. Peters books and then went to romance to get more out of the relationships.

Another author you might want to try if you haven't already is Mary Stewart. She is very good too.

Thea and Ana, you've sold me on this one. ; ) It sounds fabulous and I'm looking for a new author to read right now. Barnes & Noble here I come.

Mucho thanks!
Lisa

YAY!!! I'm so thrilled that both of you love Amelia! Excellent joint review :-)

Thea - I had zero interest in Egyptian settings before this series, but you're right, Ms Peters is just so knowledgeable and makes turn-of-the-century Egypt feel so real. And the series honestly gets better and better with each book!

Ana - Completely agree with you re romance in non-romance books. I haven't looked at my reads in detail for this year, but I'm guessing that straight romance makes up a minority, which is quite a change from previous years. Oh, and if you liked the Peabody-Emerson romance, trust me, you will love the other relationship in the later books!

Oh my god, YES, YES, YES to all of your amazing romantic adventures in Egypt choices. It's one of my absolutely favorite settings!

I first encountered darling, darling Peabody in The Falcon at the Portal (a considerably later instalment, but one that includes the fantastic and yummy Ramses), and I've been glomming them ever since. I'm in complete adoration of the entire Emerson family, they're strong-willed, practical yet impractical, unfailingly intelligent and just wonderful.

I'm so glad to see that you two have found and loved them too! YAY!
