I love the very pretty cover and fascinating portraits. They certainly say something about changing fashions, hairstyles, and concepts of what constitutes the height of male and female beauty.

(please don't enter me for the draw - I am still basking in previous good fortune)

Katiebabs -- Ah, the sisterhood of Jersey-girls! No matter how far we wander away, we still possess the rare gifts of being able to navigate both turnpikes and parkways with ease, as well as to find the fastest way to the shore and the mall. *g*

Aymless -- Many thanks for adding "King's Favorite" to your TBR pile!

Thea and Kate -- That gold-medal game for the Redeem Team was a tad too close for comfort last night -- but they did it! Yayyy! And yayy for the women's b-ball team, too! Oh, heck, yayy for all of the athletes, whether they won or not! :)

crystalgb -- Isn't the cover for "King's Favorite" lovely? It is in fact a portrait of Nell (though the art director cropped her head off!) To see the whole painting, plus a look at other pix of Nell, check out my blog about the cover at the WordWenches: http://wordwenches.typepad.com/word_wenches/2008/07/cover-girl-nell.html#comments

Sherrie -- Fancy meeting you here, Sherrie! Many thanks for all your kind words -- aw, shucks, you make me blush. :)

And many, many thanks again to Thea and Ana for their hospitality! You guys deserve your very own Smuggler Gold Medals.

Janga -- Nice to see you over here! I'm glad you enjoyed King's Favorite so much; Nell's personality really carried the whole book, and made it a joy to write. Guess that showed in the final product!

As for another time period that inspires me: I've written books set in colonial America, in cities and on ships and along the frontier, in England and Scotland and Paris and Venice, from 1650 to about 1820, and everywhere in between. I've only written the three historical novels set in the Restoration, and while I'm not tired of it yet (and I hope readers aren't either), I do keep letting myself be tempted by other times and places. I can tell you where I WON'T go: Henry VIII's court or the Regency. Both of those have been done so thoroughly, and by so many good writers, that it would be very hard to come up with something new and fresh.

Though if I'd any common sense, I should never, ever say never....*g*

I never thought I'd be interested in novelized versions of the lives of famous people, but after being introduced to Susan's great works, I am hooked. It brings you so much closer to knowing the "real" person behind the public facade.

I can't even begin to imagine the amount of exhausting research that must go into each book, especially knowing there may be scholars out there ready to pounce on the tiniest little thing. The fact that the reviews have been universally awesome speaks for itself. Way to go, Susan!

Sherrie Holmes

I've allotted myself a ton more coffee in the last couple of weeks than I usually do thanks to the Olympics. Stuck without cable, I've only been able to watch what NBC has decided is the most marketable - but I was really intrigued by trampolining when one of my coworkers told me about it! Yet another one of those "I can't believe it's a sport!" I also was disappointed that I didn't get to watch any of the equestrian or the synchronized swimming or the field events in the track and field. Maybe I was just watching at the wrong time, though!

Yeah, go Redeem Team!!!

Clara -- the ghost of Nell! I'm fascinated, and envious too. I never came across any mention of her haunting. It would fit her personality that she'd choose to linger in this life, thought, so long as she had a good audience. *g*

I believe that "her" theatre on Drury Lane has burned down at least twice since the 1660's, so Nell is being awfully persistent to keep haunting the place. Maybe she hopes to see the king one more time, considering that Whitehall Palace is gone now, too....

In any event, thanks for sharing the story!

Kate, oh, yes, I've had the Olympic fever big-time -- not only the expected events, like gymnastics and the Michael Phelps extravaganza, but the weird ones that are banished to the cable channels, things like trampoline and canoeing, things I've never seen before. It's all just so...cool. When the Olympics began, I was away on vacation, so I had a built-in excuse for squandering -- er, watching so much of it, but now –– well, let's just say it's a very good thing they're only every four years!

And yes, Thea, I'll be awake with you tonight at 2 am to watch the US men's b-ball team!

Susan thank you so much again for the wonderful interview! :) Ahh, Olympics. I'm sad but kind of happy it's all ending soon--I feel compelled to fill up the DVR with every possible showing and get up at the crack of dawn to watch more, and it has been exhausting :p

And, just cuz--go Team USA Basketball! ;)
