New Cover!

For the Twilight fans in the house–at midnight on Friday, the cover for Stephanie Meyer’s Breaking Dawn was released.

I love the cover art for all of Stephanie Meyer’s work–although I’m a bit surprised by this cover. It’s certainly not what I expected. The white Queen and the red Pawn…interesting. Any thoughts?

Breaking Dawn is the fourth and final book in the Twilight saga. It hits stores August 2, 2008–make sure to preorder your copy. I smell Harry Potter like lines come August 1…

And while we’re on the subject of new covers, Lois McMaster Bujold posted the upcoming cover for The Sharing Knife: Horizon (Book 4) (Since I have just finished The Vor Game and am even MORE in love with Miles–and Gregor too–I had to give her website a thorough once-over).

There’s a cool collection of all the cover art (by the same artist, Julie Bell) here. In her blog, Ms. Bujold says she wanted to use George Caleb Bingham’s depiction of Daniel Boone escorting settlers through the Cumberland Gap as a jumping off point for the Horizon cover. I kinda like the action shot feel of the Horizon cover, with the people in the background, and the western sort of feel. While the latter two covers don’t feel as ‘magical’ as the covers for Beguilement and Legacy, I do love the western fronteir, sort of exodus feel to Passage and Horizon.

The Sharing Knife: Horizon is slated to hit stores in February 2009. Book 3, Passage is available now at a bookstore near you!

I can just imagine the Twilight forums going mad trying to figure out the significance of that cover.

I think it’s quite cool – slightly different (less girly?) to the previous covers, but still keeping with the theme. I like the chess reference, but I honestly can’t think of a link. Hmmm – someone being manipulated? Ends justifying means?

Horizon cover: Agree it’s not a traditional fantasy cover. However, I’m thinking the target audience is someone who has read the previous books, and therefore is not really going to be swayed by the cover – and someone new to the series who sees that cover in the Fantasy section may have their curiosity piqued and pick up the first books. So win-win? 🙂

This is my take on the cover:
The white queen is Bella. She either comes out on top or becomes really powerful in some way. The red pawn is behind her, either coming for her or she has overcome it. Red mean blood, vampire, so Bella may still be human but overcome all the problems with the vampires who are after her BUT she doesn’t become a vampire, and something happens with Edward. She will see the dawn, Edward will not. Edward will die in some way.
See, I am so profound! LOL

Li, oh yes, I can imagine the theories flying back and forth right now 🙂

Katie–I am loving your thinking here! I’m kind of stumped so far as the Breaking Dawn cover is concerned too. I do think that the white queen symbolizes Bella, front and center. The red pawn is an interesting choice too (the red being vampirism? blood? something nefarious?)…but the most interesting for me is that the Queen is the most powerful piece in chess, and if this is indeed a symbol for Bella, I’m supposing it means that she takes control of her life and her decisions (similarly a pawn being the least powerful piece in chess, Bella becoming a vampire if she does is something that has been under her control the entire time)?

I dunno. I’m just talking out of my butt here 😛

And I really hope Edward doesn’t die! I don’t think Bella will become a vampire though–the vision of Bella growing old and lined with Edward eternally young and lovin her still I think could be something that does happen.

Li–I like the Legacy and Horizon covers (actually, the Horizon cover moreso than the Legacy one), and I do like that they look different from other fantasy covers–definitely a win-win!

    I love the cover!

Wow, actually, I had no clue that there’s going to be a 4th book. I thought Eclipse was the last! Thanks for posting it up. It’s valuable information for those ignorant people(like moi!).

Have you heard of Midnight Sun, Edward’s story? I can’t wait to know what happens to Bella and Edward in the end!

I love the cover for Breaking Dawn! I have not had enough coffee yet today to ponder all the reasons, but am enjoying reading all the ones here. 🙂
