I have the book in the TBR pile, but only after watching the movie, which I found both good and frustratingly lacking. So of course I must watch it over and over trying, hoping to find something more (and because the toddler loves it, it's her "bear" movie). I think I came away with an appreciation of the concept if nothing else.

So hopefully the movie garnered good interest in the books again and hopefully I can read it soon!

Other than that, I just had a blast going through a lot of yalls 10-rated book reviews. :D

I am so glad I stopped in to read youur review. You see, we *just* (last nite) watched the movie, and I must say, I came away scratching my head wondering what all the fuss was about?! Perhaps, I shall head the old adage to "never judge a book by its movie", and actually give Mr. Pullman a read.

I agree with Lee - loved Sam Elliott - and actually tried to be hopeful about the next two: as in, maybe with one solid director they can be better. I also have great hope for Daniel Craig and Nicole Kidman. But we'll see.

You're right about the books - I read them simply astounded thinking, "this is young adult???" Loved the fact that it was, but it was damn fine reading. I wish I'd paid more attention to Milton, but then I've never been into that era of literature.

Aww you didn't like Amber Spyglass, Shannon? :p I cried at the end. Just a little bit. And I don't cry. *shifty*

To each their own!

In the theater, I was seriously pissed. Naturally, holding it all in since there were a bunch of little kids there, but pissed nonetheless!

I think the last time I was this incensed was...hmm...That's a toughie. I mean, there are bits and pieces of movie adaptations/changes that really bother me: Rogue taking the cure in X-3 to be with Bobby REALLY got me in a bad mood; the insertion of Hayden Christenson as the Anakin spirit in the remastered Return of the Jedi dvd!!!!!! GAAAH!

Oh I know two: The Scarlet Letter (there was just a post on this!), and League of Extraordinary Gentlemen. GAAH!

I loved book 1 and 2. Book 3 seemed to lose a bit of steam. Sorry!

As for the movie, I have to agree. I have not been that angered by a movie adaptation since Interview With a Vampire. The movie ended and my best friend and I both yelled out "What? That's it? But..." So wrong. The casting for Lee was the one beautiful shining star. He was fabulous.

Likewise Ana :p

I know exactly what you mean about that feeling after reading the series. One of "The Big Ones". We should use that :)

I definitely think you should give this one a rental, just so you can form your own opinion on it...but yeah, I was crushed by this adaptation. Just...no.

This has got to be one of your best posts to date, Thea. I am proud to be your partner in crime.

I agree with you about the book - it is certainly one of the best I have ever read - the whole trilogy is. I remember finishing it and just staring into nothing realising that I had just read one of the Big Ones.

Because of that, I have not watched the movie. The reviews were so negative I felt I would have my heart broken if I did. I may catch it on DVD though.
